Arizona singer/songwriter Howe Gelb knowingly looks like a fish out of water on the back cover of this 2006 album, standing in the snow while wearing short sleeves. This notion extends to the music itself, which finds the eccentric Giant Sand frontman bolstering his quirky desert-rock sound with a gospel choir. While the conceit is certainly unusual given Gelb's gleefully rambling lo-fi tunes, it works surprisingly well on many of 'SNO ANGEL LIKE YOU's tracks. The choral arrangements add both soul and structure to Gelb's Neil Young-esque numbers, including the lilting "Paradise Here Abouts" and the boisterous "Howlin' a Gale." Although the record may seem like little more than a curiosity to some, patient listeners will enjoy SNO ANGEL's odd yet fascinating charms.
One of the first things that strikes you about Howe Gelb and 'Sno Angel's Like You or Howe Gelb's 'Sno Angel Like You, depending on how you wish to see the project , is that Gelb recorded this set with a gospel choir from Canada called Voices of Praise and he called the project "Sno Angel" and they made this record called "Like You." Anyway, you get the idea; it's one of the Arizona desert dweller's typically arcane musings. Gelb recorded this baby in Ottawa with drummer Jeremy Gara who now skins with Arcade Fire. Sonya VaroujianBorn in England, Sonya Varoujian has been drawn to music from a very early age. Born to parents who both enjoy singing, her home was always filled with music. From an early age she was often selected for solo choir performances or lead roles in musical productions. In her teenage years as well as being in a Select Choral Ensemble, she qualified as an All-State finalist in New York State for her singing performance and sight reading ability. She also joined the Hamazkain Armenian Cultural Choir for 3 years under the guest direction of Jean Almouhian who has directed the well known Arax choir in Buenos Aires Argentina for many years. It was when she was 15 that she began playing the guitar which was a gift from an uncle. Her playing progressed to songwriting at the age of 18.Sonya's first ever recording was a compilation of songs called "All in All" which she recorded in 1991. She formed her first band "Raindance" at the age of 21 while at art school in London England and then later returned to New York City to record two CD's entitled 'Seven' and 'Confession' with producer Oshin Baroyan. During this period she successfully performed in New York City under the name of 'Seven' with 5 other musicians. Her shows were often sold out and the performances were very well received. During this time she wrote her songs in English and she received numerous positive write-ups in newspapers and magazines such as New York Newsday, Instant ...
