Oi!: The Singles, Vol. 2
$12.35 Personnel: Rob Hill (guitar, strings); Mike Sims (guitar, piano, keyboards); Ern Dog (guitar, organ); Dontae Winslow (trumpet); DJ Muggs, Genius/GZA, Masta Killa, Prodigal Sunn, RZA, Raekwon, Sen Dog. Audio Mixers: Joe Nicolo; Rob Hill. Recording information: S.A. Recording, Los Angeles, CA. 2005's GRANDMASTERS collaboration between former Cypress Hill DJ Muggs and the Wu-Tang Clan's GZA precipitated the release of this instrumentals-only version. Working in sonic environments closer to that of Wu producer RZA than to the stoned grooves that made his work famous, GRANDMASTERS (INSTRUMENTALS) is rife with stern and ponderous rhythms marked by clean, clipped drum samples; an ominous drone to set the key; and various stabs of single guitar or piano notes to color the tracks. For those of us who couldn't get enough of the 2005 DJ Muggs and Genius collaboration project, GRANDMASTERS, the remix album is here. While the tracklist and lyrics are identical to the first (with the exception of one new verse from Ras Kass on "Destruction of a Guard"), the beats are all new, with an assortment of underground producers such as DJ Khalyl, Dialekt, L.D., King Karnov, J-Thrill, and Scoop Deville trying to one-up Muggs's work on the blazing originals. Just like GRANDMASTERS, every joint on the remix album is a banger. Disappointingly, Grandmasters Remix includes no remixing work by DJ Muggs, who'd produced the original Grandmasters album on his own. Instead, it's comprised of remixes by a roster of relatively unknown producers, with DJ Khalil standing out as the one marquee name. While many of the remixes are creative and well-produced, anyone expecting remix work by Muggs -- an understandable expectation, given the packaging, which leads one to believe that this is strictly a Muggs-and-GZA affair -- is sure to be disappointed, at least to some extent. Grandmasters was an impressive album, though, so there's still plenty of value here. For instance, GZA's rhymes remain intact, and while sometimes they don't flow all that well with the remixes, the rhymes are still deep and thrilling. Plus, the sequencing remains the same, so song for song Grandmasters Remix plays like an alternate version of its source. All of this doesn't amount to enough to entice anyone who passed on Grandmasters the first time, but for those who love that album, Grandmasters Remix might be worth checking out. An added attraction is a bonus DVD featuring tour and studio footage. ~ Jason Birchmeier The reasons for releasing an instrumental album are always a little uncertain. Is it for remix purposes (is everyone hoping for his very own The Grey Album)? To help aspiring rappers practice their delivery? ...
