| | Toby Keith American Ride CD (2009)
Attainable Love album
$11.99 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, even when he kicks up a bit of dust on the dancefloor ...

In 1972, California folk-rockers the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded what today might be regarded as the precursor to the jillion-selling pop-bluegrass crossover phenomenon that was the 2000 soundtrack to O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU. They gathered together with some of America's finest (and oldest) bluegrass, folk, and country musicians for a generational summit/musical history lesson that reached both ...

| | Louise Swedish singe Hoffsten From Linkoping To Memphis CD (2005)
Attainable Love album
$12.59 Louise Hoffsten is a megastar in her native Sweden. Since 1987 she has released recordings that have captured the hearts of her countryfolk and left them wanting more. As both a singer and a songwriter she has an uncanny knack for delivering pictures of the human condition in all its frailty, ambition, desire, vulnerability, and bravado. She is loved by performers from Marcia Ball to k.d. lang to Nancy Sinatra. From Linköping to Memphis is, in its own way, the story of a journey from her native village in Sweden to the heart of soul and funk, Memphis (and she records for the Memphis International record label now). Recorded at Ardent Studios, From Linköping to Memphis features some of the storied city's finest session men, including guitarist Steve Selvidge, keyboardist Lester Snell, bassist David Smith, and drummer Steve Potts. The horn players include stalwarts Jim Spake on saxophone and Scott Thompson on trumpet. Hoffsten co-wrote all but one track on this set with her songwriting partner, Peter Kvint, and others. Tracks range from the gritty soul-funk of "Good for You" and the reeling "Slow Train" to steamy jazzed-up soul ballads like "Fall Like Babylon," with Spake doing his best Ben Webster imitation. But there's more. There's the acoustically flavored country-ish ballad "Make the Most of It" and the folksy heartbreaker "Rise," which is pure poetry. Then there's sweltering straight-up gritty soul of "I Wish You Had My Heart" and the pumped-up rock & roll sass of "Shut Up & Kiss Me." There's so much here and it's all so utterly naked and honest, brimming with emotion and attitude, that there's something here for everyone. From Linköping to Memphis is a small marvel, a jewel in the rough that deserves to be heard and embraced. . ~ Thom Jurek

$33.10 The seeds for BALTIMORE were sown when producer Creed Taylor approached the legendary Nina Simone after her 1977 appearance at London's Drury Lane Theater with the idea of recording an album for his CTI record label. At this point Simone had ended her seven-year association with RCA Records and hadn't made a studio album in almost four years. The results of this 1978 release, mostly recorded in Brussels, are slightly production-heavy ...
