| | Rupert Holmes Greatest Hits CD Rupert Holmes Discography of CDs
(5 Customer Reviews)
Rupert Holmes' swinging '70s sound only occupied a small portion of his career, as Hip-O's 18-track 2000 collection Greatest Hits illustrates. He had a yen to be a little bit more than a soft rock craftsman -- he drew heavily from Brill Building and Tin Pan Alley, plus Hollywood musicals, wryly obvious social commentary, and soft pop to create a distinctive blend. It's often overly ambitious -- even his biggest hit, Partners in Crime, is a sociological portrait of Me-era dating -- and it can be a little fussy, particularly in the years after Partners in Crime, when his recordings gained the antiseptic cleanliness of '80s adult contemporary (even on his nostalgic theme song for "Remember WENN"). Greatest Hits contains all these aspects, perhaps downplaying the appealingly weird early '70s recordings a bit too much (those are collected on Varese's Epoch Collection), but giving a good idea of what Holmes' career was all about. And be forewarned -- it's not just about Pina Coladas, and not a lot of these songs sound like that. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Greatest Hits Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) Inconsistent for a compilation, but it's all here Because Holmes isn't a household name but mostly a one-album wonder with a bunch of other projects, this album isn't a rousing celebration of radio hit songs but, rather, more of an exposure/tribute to all his less-known songwriting talent. The self-indulged liner notes are just braggadocio. Partners In Crime is almost his Greatest Hits by itself and a much stronger buy - unless you crave his 70's fringe chart singles I Don't Need You and Morning Man. Buyer beware. The Last of the Romantics! Rupert Holmes exemplifies one of the best songs on this album, The Last of the Romantics! Hadn't heard him since I was in high school, and sadly forgot what mood setting wonderful story tunes he does. I intend to collect everything he's done, and wish he had more! If you love romance with a little humor and great soft feel~ this is for you! A great song everyone should be able to relate to, "The People That You Never Get To Love" rates this: Don't let Rupert Holmes be one of those~ get the album!! Not bad... I expected more from this CD, maybe because I only have heard four or five songs from this artist and aside these great songs, the rest are boring. Submitted by timecontinuum (Guatemala, Central America) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

A nice blast from the past. Listening to Rupert Holmes and his greatest hits bring back the good times that my wife and I have enjoyed to this very day. Very refreshing to hear these songs again. Submitted by xeuropn (Virginia Beach, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Ambrosia Anthology CD (1997)
Greatest Hits CD music
$6.29 For various legal reasons, no Ambrosia recordings were released on compact disc in America until 1997's Anthology, and while it's an imperfect collection, it does offer a reasonably thorough overview of the group's career. It only briefly touches on their early art rock records, choosing to concentrate instead on their early-'80s soft rock hits like "Biggest Part of Me," "You're the Only Woman," and "How Much I Feel." As a result, dedicated prog rock fans will find this collection inadequate, but for most casual listeners, it will contain everything they need and then some, since the disc is padded with three new songs that are pleasant. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Christopher Cross Very Best Of CD (2002)
Greatest Hits songs
$8.19 Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch and Bill Inglot (Digiprep).
Christopher Cross had a long career, but he peaked early. His eponymous first album produced four Top 20 hits, highlighted by "Sailing," and won five Grammys -- a record at the time. His streak continued with "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," a collaboration with Burt Bacharach, Peter Allen, and Carole Bayer Sager that served as the theme for Dudley Moore's smash Arthur. Cross delivered a second album, Another Page, that sounded similar to the first and sold respectably well until it generated a genuine hit with "Think of Laura," thanks to General Hospital adopting it as a love theme for their Luke and Laura plot ...

"Hole In The World" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
This 1994 greatest hits package (released in anticipation of the band's wildly successful reunion tour and album) supplants THEIR GREATEST HITS 1971-1975. It adds seven songs, but unfortunately deletes "Already Gone," one of their best rockers.
What's most interesting about THE VERY BEST OF THE EAGLES - apart from the presence of obviously classic songs like "Take It Easy" and "Hotel California" - is that it demonstrates that the band's esthetic was fully formed from day one. Despite the fact that the songs here span nearly a decade, listening to them back to back you could almost believe they were the product of one marathon recording session.

| | Billy Bland Let The Little Girl Dance CD (1992)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$10.69 Billy Bland's one big hit, "Let the Little Girl Dance" from 1960, gives little indication of his range as a performer. This 29-track anthology of his OId Town recordings from 1955-1962 contains a surprising variety of music, from blues and R&B -- including no fewer than three songs about chickens -- to soul and teen idol pop. Because of his hit, a number of the songs target dance crazes or are about dancing in general, but there's more to Bland than that. "Oh, You for Me" borders on rockabilly, and "Uncle Bud" has strong country elements, which only adds to the impression that Bland was either incredibly adaptable or his producers were flailing about madly trying to score a hit. Both might be true, but Bland definitely demonstrates his versatility on these cuts, and acquits himself well as a blues shouter and a pop crooner. One of his best pop ballads, the self-composed "You Took My Love for Granted," wasn't even released prior to appearing on this collection. Let the Little Girl Dance has all of Bland's chart items (most of which, other than the title track, were very minor or regional hits), plus an alternate version of "Let the Little Girl Dance." Collectables' domestic anthology shares the same title but has four fewer songs and a different track sequence. ~ Greg Adams
Featured here are 29 songs recorded by Bland for Old Town between 1955 and 1963, with five tracks that were unissued at the time, including an alternate (but similar) take of "Let the Little Girl Dance." Bland and Old Town tried a variety of ...

| | Slaughter Stick It To Ya CD (1990) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Greatest Hits songs
$9.19 Slaughter emerged from the ashes of the Vinnie Vincent Invasion. When, after Vincent's 1988 sophomore release, ALL SYSTEMS GO, the ex-Kiss guitarist became too unbearable to work with, singer Mark Slaughter and bassist Dana Strum defected to form Slaughter with guitarist Tim Kelly and drummer Blas Elias.
Where the Invasion was more or less a vehicle to showcase Vincent's guitar shredding, Slaughter focused more on songwriting, combining sticky sweet pop-metal a la Dokken and Quiet Riot with the bombastic songwriting of classic rockers such as Queen and Led Zeppelin. Their 1990 debut, STICK IT TO YA, was a surprise hit, spawning such anthemic rockers as "Up All Night" and tear-jerking power ballads like "Fly to the Angels." Both were sizeable MTV hits.
Commercial hard rock bands were still immensely popular at the end of the 1980s, when Slaughter (named after lead singer Mark ...
