The selections on A COUNTRY SUPERSTAR CHRISTMAS III are like a pile of presents under the Christmas tree; you won't know which to open first. Typical of the fare on offer is George Strait taking a humorous look at a culinary aspect of the holidays on "Christmas Cookies," while Chely Wright's version of "Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!" nods to the '60s countrypolitan sound.
If not for the gentle two-step beat added to the classic pop orchestration of "I'll Be Home for Christmas," Martina McBride might be taken for a '50s crooner, whereas Randy Travis's take on the old Willie Nelson tune "Pretty Paper" is pure country through and through. With its mixture of Latin-tinged percussion and moody pop, Alecia Elliott's "What Child is This?" ventures farther from the country tradition than any other track on the album. Sammy Kershaw and Toby Keith's contributions add some honky tonk roadhouse flavor to this compilation, before things end on a reverent note via Reba McEntire's unadorned recording of "Silent Night."

Country Superstar Christmas 3 album
$16.85 While the second volume of the Early Girls series is heavier on chart hits, the first collection offers more choice rarities (which, truth be told, is the real value in retrospectives of this kind). A handful of these 28 cuts are overly cloying (Earl-Jean's "I'm into Something Good" and Little Peggy March's "I Wish I Were a Princess" are almost sickeningly sweet), but the good far outweighs the bad -- alongside familiar singles like Shirley Ellis' "The Name Game" and the Shirelles' "Dedicated ...

| | E-40 In A Major Way CD (1995)
Country Superstar Christmas 3 music CDs
$8.99 One of E-40's best albums -- and along with Tha Hall of Game (1996), perhaps his best overall -- In a Major Way features the Bay Area rapper early in his career, when he was at his most inspired and focused. His previous solo releases (Federal, 1993; The Mail Man, 1993), as well as his work with the Click (Down and Dirty, 1994), had been formative and low-budget, released independently by his Sick Wid' It label in association with a regional distributor. Sure, some of that prior work was great, particularly The Mail Man and its breakout hit, "Captain Save a Hoe," but none of it compares to In a Major Way in terms of scale and consistency. Over the course of 16 tracks, E-40 collaborates with his Sick Wid' It stable of producers (Studio Ton, Mike Mosley, Sam Bostic) and rappers (B-Legit, Suga T, Celly Cel), along with outside talent. Newcomer Funk Daddy produces three tracks, including the standout "Sideways," while up-and-coming Bay Area rappers 2Pac, Mac Mall, and Spice 1 team up for another standout, "Dusted 'n' Disgusted." Besides these two standouts, highlights of In a Major Way include a pair of hit singles ("1-Luv," "Sprinkle Me") that broke into the Billboard Hot 100, plus "Da Bumble." ...
| | Leann Rimes Blue CD (1996)
Country Superstar Christmas 3 songs
$5.85 LeAnn Rimes won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The title song from BLUE won 1997 Grammys for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song. The song, written by Bill Mack, was also nominated for Song Of The Year.
The precocious LeAnn Rimes is the 13-year-old owner of a full-bodied voice dripping with the personality and drama so essential to good country music. On the title track, an old-school honky-tonk weeper, Rimes evokes the ghost of Patsy Cline without crossing the line into nostalgia. Most of the songs on BLUE are a more modern variant of the country tradition, but Rimes' uncommon intensity adds a raw edge throughout.
From the piano-based ballad "Honestly" to the roadhouse rock and roll of "My Baby," the common thread here is the passion and character that the young siren invests in each selection. The frosting on the cake is that she packs a mean yodel. This often-overlooked weapon in the country music arsenal is employed in a striking manner on "Blue" and "Cattle Call," a cowboy song on which Rimes duets with country legend Eddy Arnold. Rimes occupies a middle ground between the glories of the past and the promise of the future, with a voice strong enough to carry her along whatever path she chooses.
