(3 Customer Reviews)
Digitally remastered by Erik Lobson (MCA Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
Grover Washington, Jr. always put on exciting shows, and this performance from the Bijou Cafe in Philadelphia is a good example of his repertoire in 1977. It does not reach the heights of his best studio recordings or concerts, but there are some fine moments. Utilizing his octet of the time (with violinist John Blake, keyboardist James Simmons, and flutist Leslie Burrs), this CD (a straight reissue of the original LP) mostly features Washington playing lesser-known tunes that would not stay in his repertoire for long (other than a medley that includes "Mr. Magic"), but Washington (heard on tenor, alto, and soprano) consistently uplifts the material. ~ Scott Yanow

Grover Washington, Jr Live At The Bijou Songs Live At The Bijou Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) The Best ""Live At The Bijou", along with Pat Metheny's "Travels", may be the best live album from the entire fusion genre. This set is so enthusiastically good! Grover introduces his new hot band- Locksmith (featuring James Blake, who later established himself as a star on violin). Every song is great. Man, Grover had some sound. Few saxophonists are equally adept on soprano, alto and tenor. Philly's own Grover Washington Jr., r.i.p. Submitted by St.Davey (Windham, Me.) Was This Review Helpful? We will Miss You "Live at the Bijou" is possibly the most influential jazz album for Philadelphians in the 1970's. For those of us who were young at the time, this album awakened us to the entire genre. Its sounds are still hip today and should be purchased on its own, timeless merits. Grover may have passed away last week, but his music lives on forever. Submitted by a reviewer (Cherry Hill, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Live At The Bijou songs
$7.59 AWB's artistic winning streak continued with its outstanding fourth album, Soul Searching. Interestingly, this wasn't an album that enjoyed a great deal of publicity or that contained a lot of major hits. In fact, its biggest single, the dreamy "Queen of My Soul," only made it to number 21 on Billboard's R&B albums chart. But thanks to the devoted following AWB had acquired since signing with Atlantic in 1974, Soul Searching went gold. Indeed, AWB aficionados were quite receptive to first-rate material ranging from the invigorating "I'm the One" to the hauntingly romantic "A Love of Your Own." By zeroing in on their strengths -- hard-hitting funk and delightfully melodic soul -- AWB saw to it ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Live At The Bijou album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of ...

| | Carol Sloane Something Cool CD (2003)
Live At The Bijou music CDs
$10.05 When Something Cool was released in 1979 by Candid, Carol Sloane hadn't released a record in America for 15 years. Always underrated, the singer had been just plain invisible, which was really too bad because her clear, cool voice should have been widely available to vocal jazz fans. Fortunately, this record stirred up interest in Sloane and, after a slight dip in the mid-'80s, she has been recording steadily since. This record is an easygoing, swinging record that features Sloane singing with a small and sympathetic combo, with the always great George Mraz on bass. The tunes she sings are a mix of standards like "Can't We Be Friends" and "Cotton Tail," and lesser-known songs like Jimmy Rowles and Johnny Mercer's "Baby, Don't You Quit Now" and Ellington's "Tomorrow Mountain." The highlights of this very enjoyable disc are her slyly phrased version of Cole Porter's obscure "You're a Bad Influence on Me" and the title track, which is best known as done by June Christy. Sloane gives her a run for the money by cutting the tempo and upping the emotional stakes. This is a fine ...
| | Fighting Temptations CD (2003) Original Soundtrack
Live At The Bijou songs
$8.49 Reflecting the thin line between sacred and secular music that's particularly prevalent in the world of soul, THE FIGHTING TEMPTATIONS soundtrack modernizes this dichotomy, which has been tackled by legends like Prince, Sam Cooke, and Al Green. Given that the film's story is based on a plot about a crooked ad exec forming a choir in order to collect an inheritance, there's plenty of gospel music packed into these 15 songs. The legendary Shirley Caesar wrote and performs on both "I'm Getting ...

| | Dukes Of Stratosphear 25 O' Clock CD (1985) With Book; Limited Edition; Remastered
Live At The Bijou CD music
$14.25 XTC spent the first half of the '80s dropping out of the new wave rat race in favor of cultivating an eccentric English garden. It was a move that mirrored the Kinks ignoring psychedelia for songs about subdivisions and afternoon tea, but when XTC decided to cut loose, they did so by adopting alter egos to create a riotous tribute to the very psychedelia the Kinks shunned. They turned into the Dukes of Stratosphear and cut the EP 25 O'Clock, a brilliant, clever distillation of the sounds of 1967, filled with knowing allusions and outright thievery from psychedelic classics both popular and well-known. For those well-versed in '60s rock, it's irresistible to draw parallels to the Beatles, the Yardbirds, the Move, and Pink Floyd, but 25 O'Clock practically begs listeners to connect the dots through its swirling kaleidoscope of phased tapes, fuzz guitars, murmured voices, and ...
