The best of the Wolf
This CD contains all the songs from Howlin' Wolf's first two Chess albums. They were both great, indispensable LPs, featuring some of his very best songs.

The Wolf
Quintessential Wolf. No surprises; this is the blues the way it was conceived. He's got range, soul, and a voice that sets the foundation for everything that follows in this genre.

Howlin' Wolf/Moanin' in the Moonlight songs A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune"). All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth. Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this time and featuring 'One Way Out,' 'It's My Own Fault' (with Bloomfield trading licks with Johnny Winter...Johnny was signed to Columbia after this gig!). Newly remastered & now with 4 bonus tracks, 'Albert's Shuffle' (2002 Remix w/o Horns), 'Season of the Witch.' (2002 Remix w/o Horns), 'Blues For Nothing' (Studio Outtake) & 'Fat Grey Cloud' Previously Unreleased Live Track). Features 12-page booklet with unpublished photos from the recording session, new liner notes by Al Kooper & the Rolling Stone Hall Of Fame review by David Fricke. 60 scintillating minutes! 13 tracks. Howlin' Wolf/Moanin' in the Moonlight buy CD music As the electric guitar ace Joe Bonamassa was so strongly inspired by blues and blues-oriented six-stringers (i.e., Clapton, Johnny Winter), many of his fans would politely pester him about doing a disc of blues standards. Originally done as a lark, the results of such a session were deemed by Bonamassa good enough to be released--hence, BLUES DELUXE, on which he covers some lesser-known songs and includes three originals. Of course, his fierce, scorching guitar is center stage. If axe-men such as Peter Green, Rory Gallagher, and Buddy Guy are your cup of tea, this DELUXE item is a necessity. Recorded at Unique Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Harris Cohen. Personnel: Joe Bonamassa (vocals, guitar); Jon Paris (harmonica); Benny harrison (Hammond B-3 organ); Eric Czar (electric bass); Kenny Kramme (drums).

Howlin' Wolf/Moanin' in the Moonlight album for sale Paul Butterfield/The Paul Butterfield Blues Band: Michael Bloomfield (slide guitar). The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room. Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael Bloomfield's lead guitar is stinging and eloquent, and the rhythm section, on loan from Howling Wolf, swings like mad. The only fly in the ointment is the fairly primitive production, which often makes Mark Naftalin's keyboards sound like a horde of angry bees, but that's a small criticism in the face of blues playing as passionate and accomplished as this. A genuine classic. Live Recording Includes liner notes by Pete Welding. Personnel: Paul Butterfield (vocals, harmonica); Elvin Bishop (vocals, guitar); Mark Naftalin (organ); Sam Lay (drums). Liner Note Author: Pete Welding. Director: Paul Rothchild. Photographers: Leonard Heicklen; William S. Harvey . Howlin' Wolf/Moanin' in the Moonlight CD music The '60s were a very productive time for Junior Wells, but if any Wells album deserves to be exalted as his most triumphant recording of the '60s, it is Hoodoo Man Blues. This superb 1965 session is not only widely regarded as one of Wells' finest achievements, it is also Delmark's best-selling release of all time. Delmark has reissued Hoodoo Man Blues more than once over the years; the album first appeared on CD in the early '90s, and in 2011, Delmark came out with this 63-minute expanded edition. On top of offering an abundance of previously unreleased alternate takes, Delmark's 2011 version of Hoodoo Man Blues offers a new cardboard fold-out cover and new liner notes from Bob Koester (along with Koester's original liner notes from 1965). It isn't hard to see why Hoodoo Man Blues is held in such high regard; joined by Buddy Guy on guitar, Jack Myers on bass, and Billy Warren on drums, Wells soars as both a singer and a harmonica player. This is the same working group that Wells had been leading at Theresa's on Chicago's West Side, and Koester (who produced the album) vividly captures the type of grit that Wells brought to the stage. This is a studio recording, but when Wells and his colleagues dig into "Good Morning, Schoolgirl," "Yonder Wall," or "We're Ready," they sound as raw, gutsy, and uninhibited as one would expect them to sound in a club setting. And while Guy leaves the singing to Wells, he really shines on guitar. Guy, it should be noted, was listed as "Friendly Chap" on Delmark's original LP version of Hoodoo Man Blues; Delmark thought Guy was under contract to Chess, and so, they gave him a pseudonym. But by the early '70s, Guy's real name was being listed on pressings of this classic album. And make no mistake: Hoodoo Man Blues is a classic. This is essential listening for lovers of electric Chicago blues. ~ Alex Henderson With his Chicago Blues Band including Buddy Guy. Recorded in Chicago, Illinois on September 22 & 23, 1965. Includes liner notes by Bob Koester. Personnel: Junior Wells (vocals, harmonica); Buddy Guy (vocals, guitar); Bill Warren (drums). Liner Note Author: Bob Koester. Recording information: 1965. Howlin' Wolf/Moanin' in the Moonlight buy CD music Few would dispute that this collection is the Holy Grail of blues harmonica. Like the other entries in Chess Records' HIS BEST series, the Little Walter compilation is beautifully selected, sequenced, remastered, and packaged. At 20 tracks, HIS BEST gives a satisfying, economical summary of Walter's genius, and defends his title as the king of blues harp men. As a member of Muddy Waters's band, and on his own, Walter was one of the architects of the original Chicago sound. His propulsive chording, high-leaning notes, inventive use of amplification (he used a close-up hand-held microphone and effects like distortion and echo), and endless stream of ideas expanded the possibilities of the harmonica. With the help of such Chicago heavy-hitters as pianist Otis Spann, bassist Willie Dixon, and drummer Fred Below, Walter's own group displayed ferocious chemistry and instrumental prowess. Naturally, Walter's vocals and exceptional harp are at the fore here. Whether on signature tunes ("Juke"), slow burners ("Mean Old World"), or classic rockers ("Boom, Boom Out Goes the Light"), this is old-school electric blues at its absolute finest. In addition to its status as a textbook for harmonica players, HIS BEST is a ground-floor necessity for any blues library. This is part of Chess Records' 50 Anniversary series. Personnel: Little Walter (vocals, harmonica); Muddy Waters (guitar, slide guitar); Dave Myers , Fred Robinson , Jimmie Lee Robinson, Jimmy Rogers , Leonard Caston, Louis Myers, Luther Tucker, Robert Lockwood, Jr. (guitar); Otis Spann (piano); Fred Below, Billy Stepney, George Hunter (drums). Liner Note Author: Billy Altman. Recording information: Chicago, IL (05/12/1952-12/??/1960). Photographers: Ray Flerlage; Mary Katherine Aldin.

Howlin' Wolf/Moanin' in the Moonlight songs The giant left-handed guitarist was no stranger to the recording studio by 1966, but Albert King had still to make his mark with the record-buying public. When he linked up with the cream of Stax's Memphis musicians, including Booker T. And The MGs and the Memphis Horns, that connection was made. "Laundromat Blues", "Oh, Pretty Woman" and "Crosscut Saw" set the scene for "Born Under A Bad Sign" and "The Hunter", which quickly found their way into the repertoires of Cream and Free. The convolutions of his guitar style were perfectly complemented by the trademark Stax funk rhythms. The team went on to make many more singles and albums, none of which could surpass the achievements of their first meeting. Recorded at Stax Recording Studio, Memphis, Tennessee between March 1966 and June 1967. The Memphis Horns: Wayne Jackson, Andrew Love (horns). Personnel: Albert King (vocals, guitar); Steve Cropper (guitar); Joe Arnold, Andrew Love, The Memphis Horns, Wayne Jackson (horns); Isaac Hayes, Booker T. Jones (piano); Al Jackson, Jr. (drums). Audio Remasterer: George Horn. Liner Note Authors: Deanie Parker; Michael Point. Recording information: Stax Recording Studio, Memphis, TN (03/03/1966-06/09/1967). Photographer: Jim Marshall . Personnel includes: Albert King (vocals, guitar); Joe Arnold (horns); Isaac Hayes (piano). Booker T. & The MG's: Booker T.
