(1 Customer Review)
Picking up where the funkiest of hard-bop players (Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Donald Byrd, etc.) left off, Ramsey Lewis altered the public's concept of "jazz." An idiom with a thousand faces, Lewis exploited its many influences, including blues, gospel, soul, R&B, rock, pop, and classical music.
THE GREATEST HITS OF RAMSEY LEWIS focuses only on Lewis' early career. Over 30 years of this busy artist's career are left off this disc. Nonetheless, listeners get a wonderful insight into the early stylings of the acclaimed pianist/leader. Pop numbers such as "A Hard Day's Night" by the Beatles and the famous Russell/Farrell tune "Hang On Sloopy" are the highlights of this album, although strong bluesy versions of "Since I Fell For You" and Lewis' own "The Caves" add a lot of soul and sugar to the proceedings. Much of this music derives from live club dates from the mid '60's, and there is an air of celebration heard on each track. In fact, the audience sings along with many of the pop numbers and claps enthusiastically to the beat.

Greatest Hits Of Ramsey Lewis album
$8.39 The funk-jazz guitarist's new two album deal with Warner Bros. is definite cause for the title of his label debut, Celebration. His continued growth as a writer is clear, as the hooks of all nine originals stick immediately to the ears yet offer spaces for improvisations that sometimes border on his bebop days. "Together At Last" brings both worlds together, with Brown building a strong melody by altering his Ibanez's high and low tones over a subtle, rising bed of horns before breaking for a crazy flurry of notes which jump beyond the melody. His cherished vocalese style marries perfectly with trademark warm, percolating string notes on "Out'a Nowhere," which also throws a tonal twist into the mix; he'll begin a melody line on a happy high register and then conclude it on a tone so low it sounds like a bass. One of the benefits of his crossover success is working with two of the best ...

Greatest Hits Of Ramsey Lewis CD music
$23.65 Universal Sounds of America is one of the early compilations for Great Britain's Soul Jazz label that made a case for a separate imprint that later became Universal Sound. Artists like Pharoah Sanders, drummer Steve Reid and the Master Brotherhood, Byron Morris & Unity Ensemble, David Durrah, New Life Trio, Marcus Belgrave, and last but not least, the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Sun Ra all on the track listing for this set focus, one way or another, on "space being the place." Numerous cuts here employ the word "space" in their titles and one references it directly. Belgrave, Reid, Morris and the Art Ensemble all had titles reissued on the Universal Sound label (and Reid recorded afresh for Soul Jazz). While the focus here is on the diversity of, to borrow a term from the AEC, "Great Black Music Ancient to the Future," it is deeply rooted in '70s out jazz, with only Belgrave and Morris providing deeper, wider visions. Morris' nearly twelve-and-a-half minute "Kitty Bey" replies on modal jazz and Latin ...
