With I'm from the Country, Tracy Byrd continues his streak of sturdy, well-crafted neo-traditionalist contemporary country. With each album, Byrd grows more confident in his delivery and choice of material, which naturally makes the albums stronger. There are still a couple of filler numbers on I'm from the Country, but the key to the record's success is that he takes pains in proving the title true -- and by the end of the record, you have no question that he is indeed from the country. ~ Thom Owens Listening to I'M FROM THE COUNTRY is like spending the night in a Texas honky-tonk--it's a mix of uptempo, boot-scootin' tracks and slow dance numbers, all highlighting Byrd's warm, resonant voice. He switches easily from pleading ballads like "I Want to Feel That Way Again" to playful tracks like "Walkin' The Line," in which a misbehaving man swears that all he needs to make him shape up is a good woman's love. Highlights include "I Still Love the Nightlife," about a man who enjoys a different kind of nighttime activity now that he's settled down, and "On Again, Off Again," a character study of a man who refuses to commit. The standout is "Back to Texas," in which the Texan narrator chases his girl to Oklahoma and declares he won't return without her. It's got a killer chorus, and Byrd gives a swooningly romantic performance. While Byrd's overall choice of material shows a new maturity, he does include one flat-out ditty: "I'm From the Country," a "we're proud to be hillbillies" anthem complete with goofy backup chorus. But when Byrd starts extolling the virtues of sawed-off shotguns, coonskin caps and sleeping in the hay, you can't help but sing along. | | Woodentops Wooden Foot Cops On The Highway CD (1988) (Import) United Kingdom
I'm From The Country
$17.95 A long awaited repromotion of the band's final album, the much acclaimed "Wooden Foot Cops On The Highway". It was originally released by Rough Trade Records in 1988. The Woodentops, hailing from Northampton were very respected by the press and public alike for their unique brand of infectious pop songs and relentless rhythms. This album was co-produced by The Woodentops singer and writer, Rolo and former REM producer, Scott Litt. The CD features the 9 original tracks from the "Wooden Foot Cops On The Highway" album including the single "You Make Me Feel" plus the bonus tracks, "Get It On", "Why" and the extended mix of the single "You Make Me Feel (Late Night Mix)" The CD booklet includes all the original artwork and a complete discography of the band incorporating all of the band's original sleeves by the legendary Panni Charrington.
The Woodentops includes: Rolo (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Bernie Worrel, Fred Maher, Gary Lucas. Personnel: Simon Mawby (vocals, guitar); Rolo (vocals, acoustic guitar); Anne Stephenson (vocals, violin, keyboards); Frank de Freitas (vocals, bass guitar); Benny Staples (vocals, drums); Gary Lucas (slide guitar); Bernie Worrell (Clavinet). Liner Note Author: Rolo. Recording information: Clapham (1988); London, England (1988); New York, NY (1988). The Woodentops' 1988 album shows the group experimenting with different styles in their own eccentrically nervous way. "They Can Say What They Want" is best described as infectiously nerdy funk, while "Wheels Turning" is a lengthy song that's as close to a danceable number as the group ever produced. "In a Dream" is a manic, poppish, rap-tinged number, while "You Make Me Feel" is a capable selection that exhibits discreet country influences. Other experiments ...
| | David Allan Coe Live At Billy Bob's Texas CD (2003)
I'm From The Country
$13.35 Personnel includes: David Allan Coe (vocals); Terry Fox (guitar, banjo, mandolin); Tyler Coe (guitar); Steve Bishop (bass); Kerry Brown (drums). Recorded in Texas. Say whatever the hell you want about David Allan Coe, but he's one of a kind as a singer, songwriter, and performer. In his early sixties, Coe hasn't slowed a bit and is experiencing another of his periodic renaissances as an artist and live act. Live at Billy Bob's Texas is R-rated Coe -- unlike the "Mature Audiences Only" tag on Live at the Iron Horse -- and the performance is tight, full-on badass country-rock with a band that rivals any but the Allman Brothers (including his pal Kid Rock's). Who knows how long this show really was, as most of the audience monologues have been omitted, but who gives a damn when it's as fine as this? There are 20 tracks here, from virtually every period in his career, performed with white-hot intensity, grease, profanity, and a burning, brokenhearted passion. The set kicks off with the gorgeous "Ain't That the Way (Love's Supposed to Be)," with Kim Hastings on duet and backup vocals, one of Coe's more poignant and edifying love songs, and shifts into medium gear on "Talkin' to the Blues" before kicking into full-rock ass-kicking glory with "Son of the South" and "'59 Cadillac, '57 Chevy." Both tracks are complete with screaming leads by Terry ...
