Zoe means "life" -- not physical, but a spiritual godlike life. ZOEgirl is made up of three woman all in their early twenties: Alisa Girard, Kristin Swinford, and Chrissy Conway. ZOEgirl offers the listeners a sort of Spice Girl- meet-Jars of Clay feel. Their first self-titled CD offers an energetic mix of dance music along with an R&B sound but also with a strong sense of the bible in their words. ~ Amanda Nusbaum "I'm not ashamed to talk about it" the girls of Zoegirl boldly declare of their faith. On this trio's eponymous teenpop-meets-Christian-rock debut, songs like the breathlessly enthusiastic "I Believe," from which the aforementioned lyrics are taken, are served up with maximum radio-ready sheen. Clubby dance beats, frothy synths, and bubblegum melodies surrounding the winsome, Wilson Philips-goes-to-church harmonies of Zoegirl. "I'm gonna tell the whole world how my life has changed" they vow on "Living For You." What better way to do it than with the market-tested mode that's made megastars out of these girls' secular peers? Sounds like Zoegirl has a pretty good strategy worked out to get the world's ear. Zoegirl
$11.45 Personnel: Leeland Mooring (vocals, guitar); Jack Mooring (vocals, keyboards); Jeremiah Wood (guitar); Jake Holtz (bass instrument); Mike Smith (drum). Hailing from Texas, Leeland is a five-piece Christian rock band fronted by Leeland Moring, who was only 17 when this album was recorded. The band has a very distinct early-2000s alt-rock sound, reminiscent of bands like Coldplay and Travis. Their lyrics are unmistakably religious, proclaiming an infectious joy in their praise of God. While most of the album consists of guitar-driven rock, there are a number of down-tempo keyboard songs as well. Fans of Christian rock will enjoy this heartfelt and ...

| | Super Furry Animals Love Kraft CD (2005) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
Zoegirl
$38.59 CD contains 1 bonus track. If the acid-stoked lunacy of Welsh five-piece Super Furry Animals must be defined by a single characteristic it must be its giddiness. Distinguished throughout their career by an "anything goes" attitude in league with alt-rock experimentalists such as Radiohead and The Flaming Lips, SFA's approach reflects their all-embracing zeal for leaving practically no musical stone unturned. The group's fifth album, LOVE KRAFT, settles into a relaxed yet still trippy vibe, toning down their obligatory psychedelic excesses just a hair and introducing a palette of AM radio-styled soft rock, sun-drenched string arrangements, and even a 100-piece Catalan choir. Even if SFA's signature prog edges are smoothed over in the America-like country rock gallop of "Ohio Heat" and the Bacharach-esque orchestral pop of "Walk You Home," LOVE KRAFT contains enough small and surprising surreal pleasures to place it among SFA's best, most eccentric efforts. As Super Furry Animals settle into their second decade of recording and with it their status as veteran rockers, they're inevitably less surprising than they were at the outset of their career, when their music not only had an exhilarating rush, but there was a sense of impish glee, the sense that they were getting away with something that they shouldn't. That naturally has declined with the passage of time, yet with their seventh album, 2005's Love Kraft, SFA show signs of settling comfortably into their status as alt-rock veterans. Compared to the top-heavy, ponderous Rings Around the World and the trippy pop of Phantom Power, Love Kraft sounds warm and relaxed, lush and dreamy, with a strong, distinct sweet undercurrent to the music. Since Phantom producer Mario Caldato, Jr. has been brought back, it's not a great surprise that the album has a similar hazy vibe, but where that album seemed to drift away a little too often, Love Kraft floats in the air -- perhaps it doesn't explore as much territory, but it canvasses its ground particularly well, creating a smooth, almost soulful spin on their signature prog-psych-pop sound. For the first time, each member of the group contributes a lead vocal, but it's a testament to the band's overriding vision that the album never sounds anything less than cohesive. If some of the songs seem to announce themselves in a grander fashion than others -- "Zoom!" is an epic space-age opener, "Ohio Heat" has a wonderful spacy shimmer, and "Lazer Beam," the closest this record comes to an outright ...
