| | Gregory Isaacs Night Nurse CD (1982) Remastered
Serie Platino CD music
$10.45 A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album--the epitome of the feel-good Jamaican sound.
Although his 1981 album, More Gregory, was picked up for international distribution, Gregory Isaacs' 1982 release, Night Nurse, was his first to be designed for an audience outside Jamaica. Accordingly, Island Records head Chris Blackwell upgraded the overall sound quality, making this Isaacs' most professional-sounding record yet, and he brought in synthesizer player Wally Badarou to overdub keyboard parts on the tracks, making them less spare and distinguishing the arrangements more. Isaacs and his backup band, the Roots Radics, had a tendency to set up a groove and play, with only minor differences from one track to the next, but Badarou brought a different flavor to each song. ...
| | Sam Yahel Trio CD (1999) (Import) Netherlands
Serie Platino music CDs
$16.49 At age 27, Yahel is clearly one of the most promising new organists on the New York City & international scene. As a possible walker in Larry Young's shoes, he displays a definite orchestral concept. Sounds seethe and swell, expanding beyond the envelope; he's got that telltale, after-midnight-blue depth of expressionism. Wild drummer Brian Blade and witty guitarist Peter Bernstein give much more than a mere modicum of fuel for Yahel's imagination -- they kick him into fourth and fifth gear during these eight tracks, three written by the organist himself. Two standards appear here. The first, "Never Will I Marry," has Yahel leading the melody while Blade fires up the cauldron with embellished rhythms that run outside of the straight beat, and Bernstein's guitar chords lead to tasty, bluesy solo lines. The second, "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," finds Yahel introducing by himself on this emotion-drenched ballad, charcoal tracing from similar regret-filled themes as "I Remember Clifford" and "Polka Dots & Moonbeams." Slight grease from Bernstein's lead guitar girds Ray Brown's bluesy, soulful sweet classic "Gravy Waltz." The Bernstein-penned "Blues for Bulgaria" has an easy, steady groove with Yahel's organ setting up the guitar's melody and Blade's drums swirling around -- this one has potential at becoming a sprightly standard. ...

| | Helix Over 60 Minutes With... CD (1998)
Serie Platino CD music
$15.15 This 21-track anthology spotlights the best music that heavy-metal band Helix released while on Capitol Records.
This Canadian edition CD, released in 1989, includes three previously unreleased tracks: "Give It to You," "Jaws of the Tiger," and "Everybody Pays the Price."
When thinking about Canadian heavy metal, bands such as Rush, Saga, and Triumph usually come to mind for many rock fans -- in other words, challenging prog metal. During the early '80s, however, several other Canadian metal acts attempted to break out globally -- but with a sound that reflected the party-hearty style of Van Halen. Tops on this list would be Helix. Although they started out in the late '70s, it wasn't until the early to mid-'80s that they enjoyed ...
