This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. When Christina Aguilera's eponymous debut reached multi-platinum status in the summer of 1999, the charts were also ruled by the Latin pop explosion, headed by Ricky Martin. Since Aguilera had Ecuadoran heritage, recording a Latin pop album was appropriate, even if she didn't know how to speak the language. Besides, a Latin album was an easy way to buy time for an artist waiting to produce an eagerly awaited sequel to a blockbuster album. So, she knocked out the record that became Mi Reflejo in 1999 and 2000, between tours and video shoots. She learned the words phonetically, but she already knew most of the melodies, since the bulk of the album was Spanish-language versions of songs on the debut album. In other words, it was a mirror image of the debut -- her Spanish reflection, as it were. This results in an album that is just a little too familiar, even if it's classy and well-produced and spiked with a couple of new tunes that hold their own with the holdovers. Even so, it's hard to view Mi Reflejo as anything other than a bit of a pleasant holding pattern; it's enjoyable as it spins, but it doesn't add anything new to her music, since it's just the old music in new clothing. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Ever since the mainstream acceptance of Latin pop in the late '90s, it's become fairly common for artists who first came to prominence singing in Spanish to put out English-language albums, but MI REFLEJO is one of the few examples of the opposite process. Teen pop goddess Christina Aguilera, who comes from Ecuadorian stock, uses this album as an opportunity to pay homage to her roots. Sure, it doesn't hurt that MI REFLEJO will endear her to a whole new audience, but the singer has professed a desire to do something like this that dates back to her pre-icon days. A few of the tunes here are simply versions of her previous hits--including the breakthrough smash "Genie in a Bottle"--with Spanish lyrics. Most of the album, however, features new songs chosen specifically for this project and recorded with a Latin pop approach in mind. Needless to say, Ricky Martin-loving Latin pop enthusiasts will find as much to enjoy here as diehard Aguilera fans.Vibe (11/00, p.166) - 3.5 discs out of 5 - "...[She] exquisitely turns out her inner Ecuadorian and transcends her suburban origins with remarkably authentic Latin feeling..." Personnel includes: Mack 10, Lil Wayne, B.G., The Big Tymers, Skoop Delania, Scarface, Xzibit, Lace & Stone, WC, Butch Cassidy, Ice Cube. Personnel: Scott Storch (keyboards). It wasn't easy being a West Coast gangsta rapper at the end of the '90s. Mack 10 will tell you that. Between 1995 and 1997, around the time "Foe Life" and "Backyard Boogie" were blowing up and Mack was putting it down for Cali with Ice Cube and WC on the Westside Connection album, everything was great -- Mack was on top of the game. But his career simmered out -- like nearly every other West Coast rapper's career -- following the Death Row empire's demise. Suddenly, around 1999/2000, the rap community seemed to view Mack with indifference. His Paper Route album (2000) was his least successful and his record deal with Priority had gone sour. Then, along came Cash Money Records, looking to extend its empire from the South to the West Coast -- much like No Limit had done unsuccessfully with Snoop Dogg a few years earlier. The resulting album, Bang or Ball, features Mack rapping alongside the Cash Money Millionaires over Mannie Fresh productions. It's somewhat of a strange pairing -- West Coast gangsta rap and the Dirty South. The synthesis works surprisingly well -- certainly better than Snoop's No Limit collaborations. Mack sounds comfortable dropping rhymes over Fresh's beats and sounds at home alongside the Big Tymers, in particular, rapping about the usual gangsta topics: ...
