Cuban Originals album
$14.45 The music couldn't be from anywhere but Senegal, with its relentless polyrhythms, jittering drums, and pounding m'balax. For his U.S. debut, Fallou Dieng has put together some of the hardest sounds heard outside Dakar. It's exactly the kind of music Youssou N'Dour should be making, except for the fact that he's gone after a bigger international audience. He doesn't have the vocal qualities or range of the bigger star, but he more than makes up for it in the energy and power of his music -- all self-composed. But he's still got a strong pair of lungs, and a way with a lyric, melodic, sometimes teasing, but then pushing on through to deliver a staggering performance ...

$10.49 This recording was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for "Best Classical
Bassist Edgar Meyer, equally at home in Nashville or Lincoln Center, likes to invite his classical friends to mix with his country friends in performances of his hybrid brand of bluegrass chamber music. In SHORT TRIP HOME, he has assembled a team long on bow arms. Featured are guitarist Mike Marshall and mandolin player Sam Bush, both of whom double on fiddle, and star violinist Joshua Bell, the name above the title, who not only fits well into the proceedings, but soars right above them when the occasion calls for it. What makes this disc more rewarding ...

| | John Hammond Wicked Grin CD (2001)
Cuban Originals songs
$8.85 For WICKED GRIN, John Hammond takes a break from interpreting the likes of Sleepy John Estes and Blind Lemon Jefferson to have a go at the canon of good friend Tom Waits. Further authenticating this project is Waits's involvement as producer and musician. Rounding out the cast on this impressive project are Sir Douglas Quintet keyboardist Augie Meyers, harp legend Charlie Musselwhite, Canned Heat's Larry Taylor, and Fabulous Thunderbird Stephen Hodges on skins.
Turning to albums like RAIN DOGS, SWORDFISHTROMBONES, and BONE MACHINE for source material, Hammond used his pliable baritone and tasty fretwork to inhabit the characters and seedy scenarios of these songs. Druggies and prostitutes come to life in the 12-bar blues dirge that is "Heart Attack and Vine," while the image of homesick sailor in a foreign port is teased out with an economically played Vox organ throughout "Shore Leave." Elsewhere, Hammond and company make like Los Super Seven on the norteno-flavored "Jockey Full Of Bourbon," with Meyers and his squeezebox making like Flaco Jimenez. The only non-Waits song included is "I Know I've Been Changed," an album-ending traditional gospel number turned into a field holler by Waits's shredded growl and Hammond's soulful howl.

| | Fred Hersch Songs Without Words CDs (2001)
Cuban Originals album
$30.15 Fred Hersch's sixth release for Nonesuch is a three-CD set, with separate volumes focusing on original works, classic jazz, and, finally, songs by Cole Porter. His suite of six "Songs Without Words" can't help but highlight his background in classical music, but his lyrical pieces still have the "sound of surprise" that differentiates jazz from all other forms of music. Percussionist Jamey Haddad joins the pianist for a remake of "Child's Song," the most free form performance on the first disc. "Up in the Air," a duet with flügelhornist Ralph Alessi, is a hypnotic waltz that proves to be immediately captivating. Hersch revisits two of his early compositions, and "Heartsong," a happy piece that bursts with energy and remains one of his most enduring works; there's also a new version of his moody ballad "Sarabande." Disc two has some interesting twists. Thelonious Monk's "Work" isn't all that well-known, and the pianist responds to its quirky theme with an imaginative improvisation. Russ Freeman's "The Wind" receives an initially melodic treatment then detours into a free form setting that remains accessible. Kenny Wheeler's "Winter Sweet" is very familiar ground for Hersch, who has performed it often with its composer. Also present are equally creative interpretations of music by Duke Ellington, Benny Golson, Wayne Shorter, Charles Mingus, ...

| | Pseudopod CD (2002)
Cuban Originals songs
$8.65 Additional personnel includes: Matt Keegan (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone).
Recorded UTS Sound, Sydney, Australia; Ardent Studios, Memphis, Tennessee.
On its self-titled album, California-based Pseudopod blends mainstream pop with infusions of jazz and jam-oriented grooves. On the surface, the songs on this record appear to be formulaic, hook-laden, radio-friendly ditties. However, if one digs below the fluffy pop overtones, the musical deftness of the individual members is evident. In the middle of "Nevermind the Matter," there is a nice breakdown segment that shows off the band's musical complexity. "Dante" is another track where the group shines, Matt Keegan's jazz-infused sax solo and Ross Grant's stellar guitar work prove that they are much more than a three-chord garage band. Kevin Carlberg's vocals, when soft and mysterious, sound similar to Live's Ed Kowalczyk, ...
