Keenen Ivory Wayans (I'M GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA) directs this hysterical spoof of slasher films. Targeting, most specifically, HALLOWEEN, FRIDAY THE 13TH, SCREAM, I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, and THE SIXTH SENSE, SCARY MOVIE also mocks other genre films such as THE MATRIX. After turning his attention to dramas for a series of movies, Wayans's return to comedies contains a seemingly endless onslaught of visual jokes.

In the tradition of such genre parodies as AIRPLANE!, THE NAKED GUN, and SPACEBALLS, Keenen Ivory Wayans takes on the teen horror flick with SCARY MOVIE, a campy, riotous send-up of everything from the SCREAM and HALLOWEEN franchises to I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, CARRIE, and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. In a small town, a copycat is reenacting the SCREAM murders, and local reporter Gail Hailstorm will do just about anything to get the story. The six high school students who ran over a man on a sharp curve the year before think the killer is out for revenge, but sweet and innocent Cindy Campbell believes that the madman might just lurk a lot closer to home. Cowritten by Shawn and Marlon Wayans (and four others), the script leaves no cliché unturned; in addition to the horror parodies, the film also spoofs such teen sex comedies as AMERICAN PIE and such hit films as THE SIXTH SENSE, THE MATRIX, and FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH. The film never lets up in its striking re-creations of classic scenes, and it never passes up the chance for a joke, no matter how crude. The young, attractive cast looks like it just jumped out of DAWSON'S CREEK, playing everything up to the hilt--and beyond.

Theatrical release: July 7, 2000. The $19 million film grossed $42.5 million in its first weekend, the highest opening ever for an R-rated film as of July 2000. Former IN LIVING COLOR star Kelly Coffield makes a cameo appearance in the film. James Van Der Beek makes a cameo appearance in a scene spoofing DAWSON'S CREEK. There is one last lewd joke at the very end for those patient enough to sit through the credits. SCARY MOVIE marks star Anna Faris's feature-film debut. Keenen Ivory Wayans makes a cameo appearance in the movie-theater scene in the trailer preceding SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. Keenen's favorite scary movie is THE EXORCIST. Despite the movie poster proclaiming that there would be no sequel, a follow-up is reportedly in the works.

5 stars This movie is raw!
I love Scary Movie! Ever since the first time I seened it. I hate that I didn't go to see this movie when it was out in theaters. But it's cool, though. Still got a lot of laughs from it. This is one of my most favorite movies ever! They couldn't have had a better cast for this movie! I had this on VHS, but apparently, it's acting up. Now I'm about to get this on DVD. Can't wait until I do. There are already 4 Scary Movie movies. Shall we be expecting a 5th Scary Movie soon?

4 stars Funny and broke all barriers
This movie was so successfull because it made fun of all the teen horror flicks that the 90s was producing. When I heard the title Scary Movie, I had no idea it would be a slapstick comedy produced to take the crap out of popular teen horror flicks. Some people were offended, but other people found it funny and insightfull. I personally enjoyed the movie because it was full of great moments that show teen horror movie fans that comedy, killing, drugs, sex and impersonating can make a movie like this. This movie is definately catered to a teen audience and will offend people that don't have an open mind on humour. Scary Movie 2 was better though. Scary Movie 3 and 4 were quite funny, but aren't really worth watching.

The third installment in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series. In a medical facility, seven teenagers who have constant nightmares about child murderer Freddy Krueger undergo monitoring for sleep disorders. But nothing that anyone does seems to help them -- until Nancy Thompson, the heroine of the first movie, joins the medical staff. She suggests that they try a new drug, which inhibits dreaming, on the youngsters. The gullible doctor-in-charge opposes this treatment, forcing Nancy to fight both him and a suspicious nurse in order to save the teens. Meanwhile, Freddy gleefully unleashes one horror-filled image after another to traumatize the patients ... till they fear that this is one nightmare they'll never wake up from again. The Wayans brothers scored a surprise monster hit with SCARY MOVIE, and in the advertising for that film they promised "no sequel." So here it is, SCARY MOVIE 2, featuring the return of Shawn and Marlon Wayans as well as Anna Faris and Regina Hall in addition to some new faces added to the gross-out fun, including Chris Elliott as a caretaker with a deformed hand that he uses extensively in his cooking, Tim Curry as a professor with a thing for the girls, David Cross as a wheelchair-bound computer geek with a great combover, and Tori Spelling as a hot teenager looking for some ghostly action. The movie begins with a prologue that spoofs THE EXORCIST, with Andy Richter as the young priest, James Woods as the old priest, and Natasha Lyonne as the poor possessed child with the salty tongue. From there the plot uses and abuses from Shirley Jackson's THE HAUNTING--in this case, a group of college students must spend a weekend in a haunted castle in exchange for receiving an A from their naughty professor. Once again Keenen Ivory Wayans directs, this time borrowing liberally from such classic (and not-so-classic) films as THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE, FRIDAY THE 13TH, HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, POLTERGEIST, GHOSTBUSTERS, AMERICAN PIE, PAULIE, THE ENTITY, THE INVISIBLE MAN, DIRTY HARRY, WHAT LIES BENEATH, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR, ROCKY, CAT PEOPLE, THE FOG, CHARLIE'S ANGELS, TWISTER, CHARLIE'S ANGELS, M:I-2, and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, among countless others.
