$17.95 Portugal's own Dulce Pontes presents O PRIMEIRO CANTO featuring 14 tracks including "Tirioni" and "Ai Solidom."
In Portugal, fado queen Amália Rodrigues commands the sort of reverence that one would give to Miriam Makeba in South Africa, Celia Cruz in Cuba (though Cruz now resides in the U.S.), Edith Piaf in France, Umm Kalthum in Egypt, or Cesaria Evora in Cape Verde. In other words, Rodrigues is considered a national treasure -- she isn't just liked in her country, she's loved. So when Dulce Pontes is exalted as "the new Amália Rodrigues," it is a major compliment. However, bestowing that title on Pontes is problematic in various respects. First, it's a lot to live up to. Second, Pontes is her own person; O Primeiro Canto, her fifth album, demonstrates that she is a clone of no one. Although Rodrigues' influence is quite strong on this album, Pontes' individuality comes through on the up-tempo "Patio dos Amores" as well as haunting, dramatic ballads such as "Porto de Mágoas," "Garcia Perdida," "O Que For, Há-De Ser," and "Fado-Mae." Americans who associate the Portuguese language with Brazilian singers might be surprised to hear how different Pontes' use of the language is -- Portuguese sounds a lot different in Portugal (where it originated) than it does in Brazil. Just as French sounds like a lot different in Quebec than it does in Paris and British English doesn't sound like American English, Pontes' use of Portuguese is much different from what one would expect from a Brazilian singer like Flora Purim or Gal Costa. Pontes and Costa sing in the same language, but they pronounce ...

$18.99 "I named it as one of my favorite recordings of 2002. The entire album resonates with gentility, emotion, and grace. Clarelynn Rose displays an abundance of technique yet never calls attention to it with showiness or ostentatious fireworks."--Bill Binkelman, KFAI Radio, Minnesota"There is just something about the way she plays, ...the way she touches the strings which is strongly feminine. I'm not sure I've ever heard this from any other female artist...This attribute is one of the things which really makes the album stand out... a fresh, original, approach. It runs away from the average acoustic guitar album...conveying a wealth of warm (and) true emotions. " --Guitar Noise"Clarelynn's music soars to great heights of technical and emotional excellence. From the drone-like Celtic feel of the title song, with its series of extremely interesting rhythmic variations, to the ...

| | Chalf Hassan Bazaar Marrakesh - Trad. Music From Morocco CD (1994)
Lusitana CD music
$10.49 After seeing the great number of belly dance albums the ARC label releases, it is a great pleasure to see a disc of authentic Arabic music. This CD features no synthesizers, no cheesy string arrangements, and no scantily clad woman on the cover. Instead it's the real thing: a lead singer who plays the aud (lute) backed by a chorus of singers and drummers. One might think that a solo aud accompanied only by drummers might provide a thin texture, but Hassan plays quickly and tunefully, supplying a steady sound stream. The drums include a tambourine and a bendeer, which is sort of a giant snare drum played with the hands. Sitting in as guest percussionist is none other than Hossam Ramzy. All the numbers are traditionals. It is difficult to pick out an exceptionally good track, because they are all good. "Alabas Alabas (How Do You Do)" has a lurching, lilting rhythm; it uses an echo effect on the lead vocalist, but this ...

$21.55 Eirik Bergene (24 years old) is considered one of Norway's finest harmonica players. In fact he is one out of only two professional players in Norway (the other one being legendary Sigmund Groven). Since he first picked up a harmonica in the year 2000, he has developed his technique through extensive stage experience and has gained the approval of great musicians worldwide. American harp ace Mark Hummel once said this about Eirik Bergene: "This young man has achieved in only 4 years what most harmonica players spend 15 years or more figuring out".In addition to fronting his own band, the Eirik Bergene Band, he has performed with a long line of outstanding musicians such as Knut Reiersrud, Junior Watson, Steinar Albrigtsen, Jørn Hoel, Amund Maarud, Sven Zetterberg, and Norwegian R'n'B queen Winta, among others. In 2005 Bergene was a permanent band member of two-time Norwegian Grammy Award-winner, Vidar Busk. He plays harmonica on Busk's recent album "Starfish".Bergene has also developed a powerful singing voice, and has an eclectic taste in music drawing from the blues, R'n'B and soul. Among his influences are Guy Forsyth, Stevie ...
