Hardcore albums never sound this perfect, nor do most death or black metal albums for that matter. In fact, it would not be a stretch to announce this as the holy grail of the new breed of European metal-influenced hardcore that has sprung up recently with the likes of Shadow's Fall, Darkest Hour, Red Roses for a Blue Lady, Sevenday Curse, All That Remains, and several others. Upon initially listening to this CD, many might require essays to describe the utter awe and complete mind-trip this album is likely to reign over them. Throwdown's followers insist that the Southern California residents are a cut above most of the bands in the metalcore field, which was extremely crowded in the '90s and early 2000s. And when Haymaker is playing, one is inclined to agree with that assertion. For all its bombast and sledgehammer brutality, Haymaker is simply smarter and better constructed than most of 2003's metalcore CDs -- which is saying a lot when you consider just how much of a metalcore glut there was that year. Haymaker isn't quite as heavy and dense as some metalcore outings; Throwdown give listeners more room to breathe and don't go out of their way to be exhausting. But while that room-to-breathe factor is a plus, it isn't the main thing that makes Haymaker superior to competing metalcore discs -- the things that make this album above average are the hooks, the vocals, and the lyrics. Lead singer Dave Peters favors the sort of tortured, screaming vocal style that metalcore is known for, but his screaming doesn't make the lyrics difficult or impossible to understand ...

On its debut for Solid State (Tooth & Nail's heavy music outpost), Indianapolis quintet Haste the Day garnishes its trad metal pacing and death and metalcore extremes with flourishes of emo and some melodic nods to Tool. The influence of acts like Living Sacrifice and Zao is strong here, in both the mixed-bag approach and the dedication to faith-based headbanging. "Blue 42" sets up the album nicely, with vocalist Jimmy Ryan screaming savagely over half-time staccato percussion before the song switches into a classic dual-guitar strut. However, Haste the Day proves even more restless in "Blue"'s final portion, shifting into a normal human singing voice. Fans of modern underground types like Poison the Well won't be thrown by the stylistic wanderlust -- it's become part of the scenery, especially in metalcore.
