| | Bettie Serveert Private Suit CD Bettie Serveert Discography of CDs
Holland's Bettie Serveert--best known for one great alternative-rock-era single, 1993's "Tomboy"--spent the '90s recalling Liz Phair fronting the Blake Babies. However, a three-year layoff following their disappointing third album, DUST BUNNIES, did them a world of good. Guitarist Peter Visser found the off button on his distortion pedal, and the resulting sense of quietude--even the Tom Verlaine-ish solo on the title track is subdued--gives Carol Van Dyk's warm, rich voice plenty of room. Van Dyk also acquits herself nicely on the powerfully tense "Recall," the closest PRIVATE SUIT comes to an actual rocker.
Just as importantly, producer John Parish (P.J. Harvey, Giant Sand) adds smartly-deployed keyboards, strings, and marimba, so the mostly midtempo tunes don't blur into each other. Fans of the whisper-to-a-scream mood swings of Bettie Serveert's earlier albums might miss the screams, but PRIVATE SUIT reveals that whispers were always the group's strong point anyway.

Spin (10/00, p.179) - "...Cheap thrills spiked with deep ills....Carol Van Dyk turned from indie tuff girl to indie torch singer, tingeing her deadpan coo with the sound of heavy mileage, heavier doubts, and even some punkish camp..." CMJ (9/4/00, p.22) - "...[Her] most accomplished and personal statement to date." Private Suit album
$11.65 EVERCLEAR, AMC's finest hour and one the '90s' most powerful albums, is simultaneously lush and searing, heartache and despair borne out in elegant arrangements that combine fragile prettiness and soul-baring howls of pain. Multi-instrumentalist Bruce Kaphan rose to the occasion of his production debut. The canyons of reverb on the instruments are strangely appropriate, highlighting the almost decadent, tragically beautiful feel of the songs. Keyboards, pedal steel, and acoustic guitars drift like abandoned ships swirling around in a colorfully tempestuous sea full of unknown nautical demons. Guitarist Vudi contributes some of the most artful, non-traditional sounds ever concocted by a "rock" axeman.
The album begins with a slow, soulful lament to a love who's either sleeping or dead, before taking ...
| | Bettie Serveert Palomine CD (1992)
Private Suit CD music
$8.79 Though Dutch indie rockers Bettie Serveert wouldn't make a big splash on the alt-rock scene until their second album, the band's debut, PALOMINE established the template for their sound. As with much of their other work, PALOMINE is a study in contrasts. It alternates between brashly rocking and quietly reflective, sometimes within the same song. One of the most immediately striking ...
| | Bettie Serveert Log 22 CD (2003)
Private Suit music CDs
$14.69 After a couple of years in country band Chitlin' Fooks, Carol van Dyk returns to Bettie Serveert for this laudable outing. Log 22 starts off slow, but after a minute, the band restores its early-'90s form. Even the cover of Log 22 has that abstract '90s indie rock look. The fifth album doesn't deviate far from the band's tried and true sound, but it's solid nonetheless. Chamber pop makes its way into a few songs, such as the lovely "Have a Heart," which is led by a dazzling trumpet. The gentle "Captain of Maybe" seems to beckon the band's calling, with van Dyk offering such words as "This is not a rehearsal/This ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Private Suit songs
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods ...

| | Trembling Blue Stars Last Holy Writer CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Private Suit CD music
$15.25 Truth be told, the Trembling Blue Stars routine was getting kind of stale by the release of Seven Autumn Flowers in 2004. With that album they crossed the line that divides reliable and predictable; no longer did the morose lyrics, melancholy vocals, minor chords and cheesy synths make a positive impression. Luckily for fans of the band, The Last Holy Writer is a comeback of sorts, certainly an improvement, and maybe even one of their finest records. How did they do it? It's hard to say because on the surface it seems like not much has changed sound or mood-wise. There's still a preponderance of downbeat lyrics and Bob Wratten hasn't suddenly traded ...

| | Ventures Walk Don't Run: All-Time Greatest Hits CD (1995)
Private Suit songs
$8.99 CEMA Special Markets' Play the Hits is different than the similarly titled Only the Hits in one key way -- it actually has the Ventures' hit singles! Of course, Play the Hits has a title that suggests it might be a collection of the Ventures playing other people's songs -- which is what Only the Hits was, and that had a title that suggested it was a straight hits collection. Budget-line discs always get confusing like this. Anyway, Play the Hits is a good collection, containing all of the basics -- "Walk, Don't Run," "Blue Moon," "Lolita Ya-Ya," "Secret Agent Man," "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue," and "Hawaii Five-O" -- which is enough to make it a very worthwhile budget-line disc. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
All Time Greatest Hits is a decent overview of the Ventures' early days, presenting 12 hit tracks that the instrumental band recorded in the late '50s and early '60s. Several of their Top Ten hits are included: "Hawaii Five-O," ...
