| | Starz Anthology CD Starz Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
To some, Starz were Kiss' "little brother band," due to the fact that--like the masked quartet--Starz debuted in the 1970s, were managed by Bill Aucoin, hailed from the East Coast, and specialized in hook-heavy arena rock. And to a certain degree, this is true. But the 2000 compilation BRIGHTEST STARZ: ANTHOLOGY makes clear that Starz really were their own band--capable of penning ditties that should have stormed the charts, especially on their occasional detours into power pop territory. Highlights from all four Starz studio albums are here, and for admirers of smartly penned mainstream rock, the power pop nugget "Cherry Baby" and the mid-paced "Sing It Shout It" surely won't disappoint. And like Cheap Trick early on, Starz manage to throw a few curve balls when it comes to subject matter, straying from the expected "party rock" topics on "Pull the Plug" (which appears to be about "pulling the plug" on a lover on her deathbed) and "Subway Terror" (which details the risks of riding the subway, indeed no safe haven circa 1970s N.Y.C.). Start with a tablespoon of Kiss, stir in a teaspoon of Cheap Trick, and add a dash of Aerosmith, and you get Starz, and BRIGHTEST STARZ: ANTHOLOGY is a fine intro to this oft-overlooked band.
Starz: Michael Lee Smith (vocals); Richie Ranno, Brendan Harkin (guitar); Peter Sweval (bass guitar); Joe X. Dube (drum).
Additional personnel: Bob Messano (guitar); Orville Davis (bass guitar); Doug Madick (drum).

$10.59 Arguably, pop-metal is a form of power pop, or, at the very least, the two have some things in common. Like the Raspberries, the Go-Go's, or Blondie, a pop-metal act will typically blend rockin', guitar-powered aggression with pop sensibilities. Cheap Trick and Sweet, in fact, are perfect examples of bands that are relevant to both pop-metal and power pop. So it seemed logical when Starz provided a big dose of outright power pop on its third album, Attention Shoppers!. The band didn't eliminate the pop-metal factor on this 1978 LP; "X-Ray Spex" and "Good Ale We Seek," for example, are the type of pop-minded hard rock items that one expected from Starz. But tunes like "I'll Be There," "She" (not to be confused with the Kiss favorite), and "Hold on to the Night" are power pop ditties that wouldn't have been out of place at a Raspberries session; this isn't to say that Attention Shoppers! is in a class with the Raspberries' best work. Starz's third album isn't a masterpiece, but it's competent and enjoyable. Further, Starz deserves credit for trying something different and not turning this LP into a carbon copy of Starz or Violation. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Starz Coliseum Rock CD (1979) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Anthology CD music
$10.45 Starz was never a favorite among rock critics, who had few kind words for its Capitol releases of the late '70s. Whether Starz was providing pop-metal or power pop, the band received its share of negative reviews. But then, one can't always measure an artist's worth based on the opinions of critics. As a rule, critics tend to like music that is challenging and provocative instead of merely entertaining, which explains why the late '70s critics who praised the Sex Pistols, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, and the Clash had nothing nice to say about Starz, a band that was seldom challenging and didn't pretend to be. Starz was merely entertaining, and the band was good at what it did it did -- not great, but good. ...

$9.55 Although this album contains a lot of non-essential hardcore, it does get props for so thoroughly documenting the early-'80s D.C. hardcore scene. For some of the groups (Red C, Iron Cross), this compilation was the extent of their exposure. For others (Minor Threat, Government Issue, Youth Brigade), this compilation was just the starting point for exposure and recognition. As for the music itself, all of the songs are fast and furious hardcore. While all brutally fast and confrontational, some groups are more melodic (Teen Idles, Red C), and some are about as atonal as a group can sound (Void). Whether the music is a light or heavy ...

| | Reparata & The Delrons Best Of Reparata & The Delrons CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Anthology music CDs
$16.75 There have been Reparata & the Delrons compilations before this 2005 release with the bootleg Magical Musical History Tour being the most thorough. This 30-track anthology, however, has the considerable advantage of being an authorized production with correspondingly superior fidelity, as well as a 16-page booklet of historical liner notes with rare photos and comments from Reparata herself. As with every artist where you can't fit everything onto a single CD, there's room for argument on the track selection; one of their better cuts ("Summer Laughter") is missing, and there are a few unimaginative covers of girl group tunes that were hits for other acts. Still, it does include the songs everyone would ...
