The Sherbs: Daryl Braithwaite (vocals); Harvey James (guitar); Garth Porter (keyboards); Tony Mitchell (bass); Alan Sandow (drums). Recorded at Paradise Studios, Sydney, Australia. Except for first-class radio ringer "I Have the Skill," this record requires a modicum of work. But those who lock themselves inside the crystalline production recapture the lost prog of near-icons Gamma and Saga. This Aussie aggregate was once Sherbet, a '70s sensation down under, here striving for a more mature market, though a quirky pop sense still prevails, paving the way for Men at Work. On "Back to Zero," everyone's favorite null set gets delineated three years before saving the Fixx. "Crazy in the Night" could pass for Marillion (but can't touch the Kim Carnes dandy of the same name). The quintet works up a furor-driving "Into the Heat," and the pure positivity and confidence radiating throughout this professional offering are welcome relief in a genre too often dominated by negativity. Surprisingly preserved on CD with tasty bonus bits, this smashing sorbet deserved to be rescued. ~ Doug Stone

$11.79 2002 compilation from EMI Gold. Most of these tracks were top ten US hits & are taken from the many albums they recorded for Capitol Records at the peak of their career, such as 'Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) (1965). Track includes 'Fun Fun Fun', 'California Girls', 'Good Vibrations', 'I Get Around', 'Help Me Ronda', 'Wouldn't It Be Nice', 'Barbara Ann', 'Surfer Girl', 'Surfin' USA' & 'Be True To Your School.'
The Beach Boys includes: Mike Love, Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson (vocals). The Beach Boys includes: Mike Love, Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson. HITS OF THE BEACH BOYS is a concise 10-track anthology of the surf legends' early career, featuring most of their Top 10 hits between 1963's "Surfin' USA" and 1966's "Good Vibrations." Listeners surely can't fault Collectables for its title; anyone forced to choose just ten songs to compile a Beach Boys greatest-hits compilation (and evidently, someone was) would be hard-pressed to find any others that rose as high on the charts or sounded as good as these. The collection skimps a bit on the ballads (only "Surfer Girl" makes the cut), but has plenty of time for summer-day shots like "Fun, Fun, Fun," "California Girls," "Good Vibrations," "I Get Around," and "Wouldn't It Be Nice." As expected, however, the sound quality is quite poor (none of the stereo versions are included), and the brief running time (an anemic 25 minutes) makes this set a poor choice for nearly anyone. ~ John Bush The Best of the Beach Boys had the distinction of being the first-ever compilation of Beach Boys songs, issued in the summer of 1966, It made number eight on the charts, no mean feat, considering that most of the album -- apart from "You're So Good to Me" and "Kiss Me, Baby" (off of Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) and Today!, respectively), neither of which was a hit single -- consisted of songs two years old or more. It is a strong collection for a 38-minute body of music, representing the different sides of the Beach Boys' sound as it was defined between 1963 and 1965: surf and car songs, straight-ahead rock & roll, vocal pop, and some of Brian Wilson's more sophisticated songs within those contexts, hits and album tracks chosen based on their being as listener-friendly as possible to a teenage audience. Record buyers loved it and not just in 1966 -- The Best of the Beach Boys achieved double-platinum status ...

$13.19 Recording information: Inner Ear Studios, VA (10/2005-01/2006); Marcata Studios, NY (10/2005-01/2006). The follow-up to their 2004 album BOW + ARROWS, HUNDRED MILES OFF finds the Walkmen refining and expanding their stylistic palette. The Walkmen are often incorrectly lumped in with the garage and new-wave revivals, and while one can certainly hear elements of the Velvet Underground and Joy Division on HUNDRED MILES OFF, the ragged poetry of Bob Dylan's late-'60s work looms large here. This is not to say the album lacks its share of indie guitars and punky energy, but these elements are balanced with a poignant yearning and an artful sense of composition that sets the album, and its creators, apart from the indie rock pack. Shaking off the wintry fog of Bows + Arrows like a parka come springtime, the Walkmen return with A Hundred Miles Off, an album of lighter, brighter songs that still maintain the band's fantastic sense of atmosphere. The Walkmen's odd, endearing ability ...
