San Diego resident and hip-hop head Andreas Stevens caught the rare groove bug in the early 1990s. His search for rare vinyl eventually led him to the Groove Merchant: the San Francisco record store run by Jodi and Michael McFadin. When the husband and wife team decided to expand operations, establishing the Ubiquity label, Stevens, aka DJ Greyboy, was one of the first artists to offer his services. Freestylin', his 1994 debut, would be a Ubiquity best seller for years to come and did much to establish the initial outlook of the label. The bulk of the material finds its source in the funk/jazz/hip-hop melting pot that is acid jazz/rare groove. Though Greyboy does lay down some fine templates -- tightly constructed bass and breakbeat grooves from his impressive record crates -- it's his co-conspirator, tenor saxophonist Karl Denson, who steals the show. Denson combines with Harold Todd's flute to deliver the melodic blueprint of tracks like "Ruffneck Jazz" and "On the Strip." It's the saxman's soloing, however, that really impresses. The album title track, with its crowd samples, brings the live flavor, and Denson responds with an impassioned improvisation, blazing a trail for Todd to follow in. The Denson-penned "Who's Gonna Be the Junkie?" is a standout. Todd straps on his sax to join the author for this tenor showcase, which has the two soloing over an excellent, lopping funk groove navigated by Derek G.'s bass of lead. Guitarist Marc Antoine also receives prominent billing, lending impressive six-string displays to "Lite Bake" and a reading of Melvin Sparks' "Texas Twister." It's Greyboy, however, who gets the last word in, signing off with the drifting vibes of "Outerlude" and concluding a promising debut. ~ Nathan Bush

| | Greyboy Mastered The Art CD (2001)
Freestylin' album
$13.39 Andreas Stevens (aka Greyboy) first emerged as a DJ at the end of the 1980s. After christening Michael McFadin's Ubiquity imprint with his Greyboy 12" #1, he provided the label with one of its first full-lengths, 1994s Freestylin'. On his third outing, Mastered the Art, the DJs dusty, hip-hop beats are found mingling with the retro sounds of his extensive 8-track tape collection. Late '90s rare-groove may still be the best description but Mastered the Art's flavors include the sounds of Italian cinema, 70s easy listening and tropicalia as well. Supplying the exotica, are Greyboy Allstar multi-instrumentalist Elgin Park (guitar, piano, omnichord, sitar), and veteran jazz vibe player Dave Pike. It's plainly obvious that Steven's genre-warping concept couldn't have worked without them. "Polyphonix" mixes kitschy horns, space-age-bachelor vocals and late-night-jazz-club guitar musings. "Logan's Run" sounds like an appropriate theme song to the 1976 sci-fi film, albeit retrofitted with a modern dance beat and "Instantly" is a wonderful lopsided slice of choppy electro-funk. Greyboy embellishes such rich, stylistically confused blends with samples of hip-hop catch ...
| | Greyboy Soul Mosaic CD (2004)
Freestylin' CD music
$13.45 It was ten years ago that producer/DJ Greyboy burst onto the southern California club scene with the groundbreaking Freestylin', an album that helped give shape to the nascent acid jazz movement and define a regional dance music genre. Although he has been active and in high demand as both a producer and DJ since, his output of albums has been sparse, averaging about one every three years since his debut. Soul Mosaic (aptly subtitled "A Case Study in Beats, Soul and Funk") finds him muscling up the standard ...

| | Loreena McKennitt To Drive The Cold Winter Away CDs (1987)
Freestylin' music CDs
$18.99 TO DRIVE THE COLD WINTER AWAY, one of Loreena McKennitt's first recordings, was originally released in 1987, but this 2004 reissue includes remastered sound, new liner notes, and a DVD featuring videos and a documentary about the artist. Though this is an album of Christmas music, it bears no relation to warm, feel-good holiday offerings by the likes of Bing Crosby or Nat King Cole.
Instead, TO DRIVE THE COLD WINTER AWAY draws on old-world, traditional holiday songs from Scotland, Ireland, and England, and the overall feel of the music is haunting and melancholic. McKennitt accompanies herself on harp on each of these ballads and carols, and her clear, dramatic soprano lilts and floats through the minor-key melodies. The starkness of the recording, rich in resonance and ambience, is perfectly suited to the music, a fact highlighted by the reissue's crystalline sound. Though more appropriate for a chilly, wintry, spiritual quest on the Moors than a yuletide family gathering by the fire, McKennitt's project is a striking glimpse into the spirit of Christmas past.
Canadian singer/composer Loreena McKennitt is self-managed, self-produced, and the head of her own internationally successful record label, Quinlan Road. In a recording career spanning nearly two decades, McKennitt's "eclectic Celtic" music has won critical acclaim worldwide and gold, platinum and multi-platinum sales awards in fifteen countries across four continents.Born ...

| | St James' Gate Juice Of The Barley CD (2006)
Freestylin' album
$17.09 The band plays the last note of the night and the sound of the bagpipes is still reverberating through the room. They come off the stage exhausted but they’re smiling and you just know that they have had as much fun performing as the jam-packed audience did listening. This is St. James’ Gate, a rollicking, rambunctious Celtic band based in Central Alberta. They have been playing their own brand of Celtic music since they formed back in 2000 and have been honing their craft ever since. From their modest beginnings to playing packed venues these boys certainly know how to show everyone a good time. They feel equally at home performing for home town crowds and at venues such as O’Reilly’s Pub, Erin’s Pub, and the Outer Cove and Ramea Rock Island Music Festivals in Newfoundland. These boys have cross country appeal. Whether playing for thousands while headlining for the Canada Day celebration in Red Deer and the Red Deer edition of the Scott Tournament of Hearts or playing to an enthusiastic audience in their home pub they never seem to disappoint. They have also warmed up audiences for The Irish Descendants and The Fables when those bands made stops in Central Alberta ...
