Principally recorded at Downtown Rehearsal Studios, Odditorium and Concentrated Studios, Los Angeles, California.
Originally intended as a tape of beats and other sounds that could be sold now and again to increase cash flow, Nobody's Soulmates quickly became fancied by hip-hop connoisseurs who were keeping an ear out in Los Angeles. The CD's 18 tracks were created by Nobody on a sampler, antiquated laptop, turntables, and with the help plenty of samples. Known as Elvin Estela to family and friends, Nobody makes adroit use of these tools and resources in his shaping of Soulmates. Such instrumental songs as "Leading to the One," which combines subsided basslines with offbeat rhythms, and the raining cymbal patterns and loopy guitar vamps of "Outbreak," make this release a pleasure to listen to. Nobody stacks samples in such a way that he retains the essential quality of the music's original context while generating hypnotic sonic tensions that coax one into introspecting on nothingness. Hip-hop ditties featuring guest appearances by a few of L.A.'s underground poets also add to the CD's success. Medusa from Organized Noize, 2 Mex of Visionaries, Aceyalone, and Freestyle Fellowship all rhyme in time with Nobody's constructions. A creative CD that resists the formulaic, Nobody's Soulmates subtly raises the musical bar for hip-hop and instrumental acts to follow. ~ John Vallier

Soulmates album
$13.09 Art-metal heavyweights Neurosis have been steadily perfecting the balance between heaviness and symphonic grandeur, and they may have gotten things one hundred percent correct with TIMES OF GRACE. While the term "progressive" might elicit groans from diehard headbangers, it's entirely appropriate when describing the evolution of Neurosis's sound. Songs like "The Doorway" and "The Last You'll Know" build an inescapable sense of oppressive dread with their walls of crushing, droning guitar, but the band has far more than that to offer. Tribal rhythms, electronic textures, and delicate acoustic passages color the work and make the sheets of noise all the more potent when they arrive. "Exist" and "End of the Harvest" could almost ...
| | Great Adventures Of Slick Rick CD (1988)
Soulmates CD music
$7.79 In the history of rap music, there are few artists who can be labeled as pioneers. One such artist is Slick Rick who, along with partner Doug E. Fresh, is the rapper responsible for such long-standing hip-hop classics as "The Show" and "La Di Da Di." With the special rhythmic flow of his accented vocals (he was born and raised in England) and powerful, innovative production, THE GREAT ADVENTURES OF SLICK RICK further led Rick Walters down the road of quick, massive fame and sealed his reputation as a master MC.
At the time of this solo debut, Slick Rick's personalized style was ground-breaking. The first single, "Children's Story," crowned Rick the king of rap's storytellers. He was able to turn the truthful pain and hardships of his community into entertaining tales that opened the eyes of the industry, and gave hip-hop a new thematic avenue. With the exception of LL Cool J's "I Need Love," Rick's "Teenage Love" was rap's most popular slow ...
| | Pete Rock Mecca & The Soul Brother CD (1992)
Soulmates music CDs
$8.59 It would have been hard to match the artistic success of their debut EP on a full-length recording, but Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth did just that on Mecca and the Soul Brother, and they did so in the most unlikely way of all after the succinctness of All Souled Out -- by coming up with a sprawling, nearly 80-minute-long album on which not a single song or interlude is a throwaway or a superfluous piece. Granted, 80 minutes is a long stretch of time for sustained listening, but the music is completely worthy of that time, allowing the duo to stretch out in ways that their EP rendered impossible. Again, the primary star is Pete Rock's production acumen, and he ups the ante of rock-solid drums, steady cymbal beats, smooth-rolling bass, and fatback organ, not to mention his signature horn loops. C.L. Smooth is the perfect vocal match for the music. He is maybe one of the few MCs capable of rapping a fairly credible love song, as he does on "Lots of Lovin'." "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)," a tribute to friend and Heavy D. dancer Trouble T-Roy, who was accidentally killed, packs a poignant emotional weight, but it is Smooth's more direct and conscientious -- and frequently autobiographical -- side which ultimately carries the album lyrically. The songs are connected and the album is propelled forward by Rock's quick, soul-tight ...
| | Mary J Blige What's The 411? CD (1992)
Soulmates songs
$8.45 The opening track 'Leave A Message' is an immediately intriguing hook for the listener. A series of answering machine messages over a funky drum beat does not fail, even though most callers insist on saying 'peace' instead of 'goodbye' at the end of every call. The artist first appears on track two, and stays in control throughout an album of high-quality urban R&B/soul. Highly commercial, yet it never sinks to the blandness of some other 90s female pop acts. Tracks such as 'Real Love' lend more to the best of Aretha Franklin pop flirtations than to 90s R&B. Blige is Aretha's heir apparent.
Engineers include: David Kennedy, Tony Maserati, Mike Fonda.
Personnel: Mary J. Blige, Buttnaked Tim Dawg, Sean "Puffy" Combs (vocals); Darryl Pearson (various instruments); Dave "Jam" Hall (keyboards, drums); Mark C. Rooney (keyboards, drum programming); Gordon Pickett, Mark Morales, Cool Rah (drum programming); Billy Lawrence, Tabitha Brace, Terri Robinson, Tiffany Hailey (background vocals).

| | Aesop Rock Labor Days CD (2001)
Soulmates album
$14.69 Every once in a while an MC comes along who has the ability to reaffirm listeners' faith in hip-hop as a medium for intelligent, poetic, personal expression. Aesop Rock is one such MC, and LABOR DAYS is his defining statement. A flagship artist of the underground label Def Jux, Aesop Rock brings a style that is blisteringly fast, impossibly dense, and overflowing with metaphors, images, puns, references, and narratives. Rock's voice and attack--a rapid-fire, ...
| | Brother Ali Shadows On The Sun CD (2004)
Soulmates CD music
$11.59 "We don't have bar mitzvahs," raps Brother Ali on "Room With a View," "we become men the first time our father hits us." There's a lot of anger and pain behind the sophomore (and first CD) release by the self-described "urban Norman Rockwell," but Brother Ali chooses not to wallow in self-pity. Instead, his carefully observed lyrics draw on his Muslim faith and his personal experiences, including the self-esteem issues he has faced as a heavy-set albino, to convey a positive message of transcending rage and overcoming self-doubt. Brother Ali is an articulate MC with a strong technique and an appealing personality; he's introspective, righteous, and proud without seeming humorless, self-righteous, or overbearing. You'll hear some braggadocio on this album, but Brother Ali demonstrates in "Win Some Lose Some" that he's willing to admit when he got his ass whooped. He also critiques male possessiveness in the ironic, laid-back "Prince Charming," which features a smooth-talking ...
