| | Battleaxe Warriors CD (1 Customer Review)
One of the most desirable things about underground hip-hop has been the diversity of places it originates from. Most (if not all) of the MCs on this compilation are from Vancouver, British Columbia, including artists such as Moka Only, LMNO, Buc Fifty, and the Swollen Members (a duo composed of MadChild and Prevail). The music's a unique blend of breaks and jazzy background samples, with some of the best MCs to ever hail from Canada laying down the lyrics. Extra attention should be paid to MadChild's verses, his skill with words is exceptional. This is the second compilation like this from Battle Axe Records, the first was released in 1999 entitled Defenders of the Underworld. ~ Brad Mills

Battleaxe Warriors
$12.75 Amethystium: Oystein Ramjford. Oystein Ramfjord's project, Amethystium, creates ethereal, mysterious aural impressions on his debut release, Odonata. Although this album officially came out on August 14, 2001, it had already achieved significant popularity and airplay at his site on www.mp3.com, where it has been extremely well-received in both the new age and electronica genres. (Go to http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/92/amethystium.html to hear samples of his work.) As the offerings from this talented Norwegian composer tend to be melodious and relaxing, and have a pleasant variety of timbres and cadences which maintain listeners' interest, their attraction is quite understandable. "Opaque" could be music for submariners, with its echoing sonar tones. "Enchantment" has a Middle Eastern influence, while "Avalon" offers delicate crystalline chimes. "Arcane Voices" includes Gregorian chanting interwoven with percussion. Ethnic influences can also be heard in the Sanskrit vocalizations on "Opaque" and the Buddhist chanting of the opening to "Lhasa." Yet, all these diverse influences are melded together into a harmonious whole that rings delightfully to the ear. In all, this is an elegant album, and its ambient soundscapes will draw many casual listeners ...
| | Solomon Burke Got To Get You Off My Mind & Other Hits CD (2003)
Battleaxe Warriors
$7.89 Got to Get You Off My Mind and Other Hits is a no-frills budget collection of Solomon Burke's music. The Southern soul shouter had many hits in the mid-'60s for Atlantic and a few of them are here: "Cry to Me," "If You Need Me," and the rollicking "Got to Get You Off My Mind." The rest of the disc is made up mostly of heartbroken ballads like "Someone Is Watching" and "Goodbye Baby (Baby Goodbye)," and with a few strutting soul romps like "You're Good for Me" and "Down in the Valley." The songs on the disc are all great, but since it omits perhaps his most well-known song, "Everybody Needs Somebody," it can't really be considered a good purchase for anyone who wants to get something even approaching a complete picture of Burke's work. For someone who just wants a fleeting glimpse, it works just fine. ~ Tim Sendra With Solomon Burke enjoying a richly deserved post-millennial comeback thanks to his well-received albums Don't Give Up On Me and Make Do With What You Got, some recent converts to the King of Rock & Soul might be in need of a crash course in his classic sides of the 1960s, which doubtless prompted the release of this budget-priced compilation. Featuring ten tracks from Burke's tenure at Atlantic Records, Got to Get You Off My Mind features a few of Burke's better-known tunes (most notably "Cry to Me," "Goodbye Baby [Baby Goodbye]," and the title cut) as well as some equally impressive lesser-known songs from his salad days, though the set manages to skip Burke's two biggest hits, "Just Out of Reach (Of My Two Empty Arms)" and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love." The mastering ...

Battleaxe Warriors
$6.65 With the thrash revival in full swing, Nocturnal Rites members Nils Eriksson and Fredrik Mannberg revived their decade-old side project Guillotine to show the kids how it's done. BLOOD MONEY is rooted in the old-school style of Anthrax and Slayer, but is mainly inspired by those bands rather than being stuck imitating them. The pace is set almost immediately by the jugular-tearing opener, "Insane Oppression," and rarely lets up throughout songs like "Die/Live?" and "War". This isn't music made to change the world, but rather to scorch a good swath of it black with fiery intensity. It stands to reason that a label calling itself Pulverised Records probably isn't going to be putting out new age CDs or anything else that's on the mellow side. A name like Pulverised Records implies that some type of loud, forceful, in-your-face rock is being provided -- probably metal. And sure enough, metal is the focus of Pulverised Records (they spell it "Pulverised," not "Pulverized"). But metal comes in many different forms. On Guillotine's Blood Money, metal means thrash metal -- and the Swedish headbangers do a great deal of thrashing on this 2008 release, which is their first album since reuniting. Stylistically, Blood Money picks up where Guillotine's pre-breakup output left off, and they maintain their commitment to 1980s-style thrash on mosh pit-friendly offerings such as "Madness," "Insane Oppression," "Welcome to Dying (Death, Destruction & Pain)," and "Insanity." Guillotine play at breakneck speed most of the time, providing tunes that are competent but not overly memorable. Blood Money isn't ...
