| | Jamie Lidell Muddlin Gear CD Jamie Lidell Discography of CDs
In the year 2000 the form of electronic music coined as "intelligent dance music" finally got dished up some well-deserved recognition. With record labels such as Warp leading the way for years, IDM's newfound respect also made way for questions as to what is the genre's definition and what its title really means. Jamie Lidell's release Muddlin Gear serves as a good answer and a prime example as to what electronic music standards fit the niche.
Lidell's sound rests on the thicker side of IDM, with Muddlin Gear's heavy programming and clustered, scattered samples and sounds. The music is chunky, dense, and layered, reminiscent of a child with a severe attention disorder. On the other hand, it is also intelligent, as its style and quality fit no mold. The production is clean and the programming, though seeming rough, is actually detailed and polished. With track five, "In Inphidelik," there is some obvious Aphex Twin influence along with scattered Squarepusher flavor. With both artists being such heavy influences on the world of IDM and overall electronic music, it is hard to produce much of anything without both having some sort of haunting ubiquity. The track "Looming Presence" brings in vocals, and borders between being a poke at most R&B tracks and a very well-done blend of IDM and R&B sounds. Listeners are left to ponder if they should commend the single or have a good chuckle at it, as with the album's last track -- a straight-up doo wop song. ~ Diana PottsQ (12/00, p.126) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Grey, harsh and collage-heavy. At a pinch...it resembles 1977-vintage industrial music....Music for as brave new world..." Jamie Lidell Muddlin Gear Songs | 1. | Entroscooper, The |

Muddlin Gear album
$6.25 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying ...

| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Muddlin Gear album
$10.05 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, ...

| | Sirens Songs Of The Silver Screen Sirens...Songs Of The Silver Screen CD (1996)
Muddlin Gear CD music
$17.75 When critics analyzed the neo-swing movement of the 1990s, the question on their minds was, "Why a revival of 1940s music, and why now?" Some argued that the movement was part of a revolt against political correctness, while others insisted that '90s youth were yearning for fun, escapist music at a time when a lot of music was angry, angst-ridden, and pessimistic. Another argument asserted that '90s youth were longing for music with some glamour -- if so, Quinn Lemley provides plenty of it on her debut album, Sirens...Songs of the Silver Screen. This cabaret/swing/pop effort is a tribute to the glamour goddesses of Hollywood's classic era, and Lemley has a lot of fun celebrating such stars as Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis, and Greta Garbo. Lemley acknowledges the wholesome girl-next-door types like Betty Grable and Doris Day, as well as sex sirens like Rita Hayworth (whom she has modeled her redhead vixen image after), Marilyn Monroe, and Julie London, whom she salutes on "Cry Me ...
