There is no shortage of conguero-led Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz groups in the world. With so many household names like Poncho Sanchez and Ray Barretto to choose from, why stop and take notice of the slightly below the radar Francisco Aguabella? All questions will be answered and doubt will disappear at the first listen to 1999's H2O. While other percussionist/bandleaders have their roots firmly in the mambo dance craze of the '50s and '60s, Aguabella's music is born of rhumba. The difference is palpable. From his distinct, clear, sharp tone to his enigmatic, quinto-driven phrasing, Francisco, though a staple of the New York scene for many decades, never left Havana. Producer Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez, a Latin jazz headliner himself, managed to capture the raw, no-frills energy of Aguabella's style on H2O beautifully. Sonically, the record has the closeness and intensity of first-row seats in a small, smoky club. Stylistically a little less folkloric than Francisco's first release, Agua de Cuba, there's a dance sensibility that drives the record. The arrangements are plenty jazzy, but without losing the visceral punch that so many bandleaders sacrifice. The selections with vocals are definitely salsa, but without being homogenized or slick, maintaining the funky quality so often sacrificed in preference toward shiny production. If there is such a thing, Aguabella is both the modern master and original gangster of Afro-Cuban music. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

H2o songs
$13.59 Jack Costanzo originally became famous for playing bongos with Stan Kenton's Orchestra and the Nat King Cole Trio. He kept very busy in the 1950s and then had a lower profile for a few decades, making a comeback in the late '90s. Scorching the Skins has Costanzo leading a large group through a variety of styles, all of them Latinized. Along the way one hears swing (a spirited if overly brief "Sing, Sing, Sing"), bop ("Birks Works"), New Orleans jazz ("Creole Spice"), Afro-Cuban jazz, and a generous ...

| | Luis Perico Ortiz One Of A Kind CD (1991)
H2o CD music
$15.19 Ortiz was a '70s Young Turk, a trumpeter who worked equally well in tipico and jazz-oriented vein. Having improved many other people's albums, he cut this one in 1979, before vanishing into the Black Hole caused by the early '80s salsa recession. It was stylistically a hugely varied as well as talented album, and it's good to see it back. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music
Ortiz was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico and raised in Santurce, a section of San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. His family enrolled him in the Free School of Music of Puerto Rico. From there he went on to study at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico. After he graduated from the Conservatory, Ortiz enrolled and attended the University of Puerto Rico to continue his musical education and where he would eventually earn his Bachelors Degree. In 1967, at the age of eighteen, Ortiz participated as a guest sololist with the Puerto Rican Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pablo Casals. In 1970, Ortiz moved to New York City and gained recognition as a talented trumpet player, composer, arranger and producer for his work with the likes of Tito Puente, Mongo ...

H2o music CDs
$18.29 This Beat Goes On compilation features two of Styx's earlier records -- 1975's Equinox and 1976's Crystal Ball -- together on one disc. There isn't much in the way of the pop anthem sound that Styx would later adapt and become famous for in the late '70s and early '80s; no "Come Sail Away" or "Too Much Time on My Hands" (not even a "Babe" anywhere in sight). But these two albums do feature the sound of a group going through some crucial growing pains; shedding their intensive prog rock skin and becoming much more accessible and radio-friendly. Equinox ...

| | Butterflies Of Love Famous Problems CD (2007)
H2o album
$14.69 Any band that would name themselves the Butterflies of Love (a French euphemism for pubic crabs) probably has a higher level of cynicism than the average Joe, and the third album from the Connecticut-based group, Famous Problems, would tend to confirm this; this is dark, faintly garage-influenced indie rock that suggest a shotgun marriage between the Ass Ponys and Green on Red, with an extra helping of fuzzed-out guitars and cheap organ up front. The Butterflies of Love also generate more than their fair share of bad karma on these tunes, especially on the bitter "Lies Will Sound Like the Truth" or "In a Blizzard in a Lighthouse" which unearths a palpable sense of abstract dread. But while no one is about to accuse these guys of being ...
