Led Zeppelin fans waiting nearly two decades for John Paul Jones to release a solo album could be forgiven for assuming that the bassist/keyboardist had probably mellowed with age. Luckily, ZOOMA reveals the exact opposite to be true. Long known to be the driving force behind many of Zep's most experimental moments, Jones here goes for the jugular, delivering a slab of highly aggressive instrumental music that sounds like his former band jamming with a punk rock King Crimson. Replete with crushingly heavy grooves and gnarly sounds courtesy of an array of standard, 10-, and 12-string basses, the album twists and turns like a monster serpent devouring everything in its path. Notable guests include frequent Robert Fripp collaborator Trey Gunn and Butthole Surfers guitarist Paul Leary, the presence of both of whom gives some indication of ZOOMA's intensity and disregard for expectations.
Recorded at The Malthouse and Air Studios, London, England, Skip Saylor, Los Angeles, California and Pedernales Studios, Spicewood, Texas.
Personnel includes: John Paul Jones (conductor, guitar, electric mandola, organ, 4-, 10-, 12-string & lap steel basses, kyma); Paul Leary, Trey Gunn (guitar); Pete Thomas (drums); Denny Fongheiser (djembe).
Engineers include: Richard Evans, Stuart Sullivan, Brian Foraker.
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.Rolling Stone (9/30/99, pp.84-5) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...downright hellbent grooves....Jones creates thunderous, King Crimson-like, brainiac rock with a battery of four-, ten- and twelve-string basses....Jones has outpaced his more flamboyant former band mates in the adventurous department." Alternative Press (11/99, pp.104-5) - 3 out of 5 - "...goes a long way toward proving he's capable of serving up a slamming blend of classic blues grit and contemporary, head-banging rock-and-roll....proof that rockers over 50 still have what it takes to create fresh, incendiary music." The Wire (9/99, p.58) - "...undeniably visceral....it becomes apparent that JPJ is basically refining his past....'Snake Eyes' and 'Nosumi Blues'...would have sounded right at home on PRESENCE." Mojo (Publisher) (9/99, p.112) - "...a bass-man's album in excelsis, an instrumental set which, on an open-windowed sunny day, could knock the whole street down....Well past bombastic technical display, Jones just goes for power and thrill..." Zooma CD music
$15.79 This solo offering from former Zep man John Paul Jones comes to you courtesy of Robert Fripp's DGM label, and it's not difficult to see why the King Crimson guitarist feels a sense of simpatico with Jones. Much of the material here echoes not only the more artful sounds Jones explored with latter-day Led Zeppelin, but moreover the visceral blend of art-rock and heavy riffs that King Crimson began ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Zooma music CDs
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper ...
| | Jethro Tull Songs From The Wood CD (1977) Remastered
Zooma songs
$9.99 In terms of rustic, tights-wearing, elf-loving, flute-heavy, British/Celtic folk-tinged '70s prog-rock, SONGS FROM THE WOOD is the most Tull of all Jethro Tull albums. By 1977 the band had ventured far enough from its heavy blues-rock beginnings to create a completely unique, idiosyncratic sound, filled with European folk mythology, rural imagery and an endearing combination of art-rock and British folk-rock. Elaborate synthesizer fanfares mix with delicate acoustic guitar tapestries, complex arrangements and odd time signatures. SONGS FROM THE WOOD strikes the perfect balance between the proggie ambition of THICK AS A BRICK, the ...

Zooma songs
$11.59 In part because it was released on Devendra Banhart's Gnomonsong label, Rio en Medio's debut album attracted instant attention among devotees of the sort of odd, spacy folk-based music popularized by Banhart and Joanna Newsom in the preceding years. The wispy vocals and delicate, eccentric songs of Rio en Medio, aka Danielle Stech-Homsy, are embellished by all manner of imaginatively eerie instrumentation and effects on this set, which sometimes has the feel of a folk troubadour trying to sing her way out of a psychedelically ...
