Decoded Feedback put together the sort of driving, synth-oriented techno that Front Line Assembly and the like crafted during the late '80s. Their urgent, angry sound rarely changes up throughout the 11 tracks here; instead they rely on the constant repetition to drive home their dark sound and visceral message. The hateful vocals are what really puts this over, bringing the music closer to KMFDM or Ministry than what the keyboards would suggest. This music does sound a bit dated at this point, but luckily Decoded Feedback has enough common sense to draw on their own strengths and put the emphasis on the harsher elements of their sound. No one will ever mistake this for VIVIsect VI, but this is one of the better electro-industrial albums to appear in the '90s. ~ Bradley Torreano

Sounding like a lonely prophet singing through the middle of the nuclear apocalypse, Project Pitchfork starts Chakra Red on a very high note. Of course, from that point they have to take a dive, and despite the good qualities of "2069 A.D.," by "Malicious Delight" they hit averageness very hard and swiftly. Still, the band begins the upward climb by the next song and they manage to maintain a level of quality that never quite reaches the first track, but never stops reaching for it. What makes Project Pitchfork better than 100 other bands that craft this same sound is their ability to incorporate dissonant sounds. Big, ugly basslines pop up ...

Numb Language Of Silence CD  (1998)

Technophoby music CDs
CD $10.35  4 stars Audio Samples
After Numb released Blood Merdian, there appeared to be few directions this act could grow besides evolving into power electronics and noise. With Language of Silence, Numb have proved that sometimes the best way forward is not to push through, but instead to cut back. The main difference between the two releases is that Language of Silence is a much tighter, refined collection. Synth sounds have been sharpened without losing any of their viciousness, while melodies have matured, forming a new blend that allows the complexities to show through in a way they have not in previous Numb releases. Where Blood Meridian was largely aggression, Language of Silence proceeds with a more quietly sinister quality, obvious in the delicately tortured feel of tracks such as "Deviation." "No Remorse" shows that restraint and using fewer, fuller sounds can be a binding way to build and release tension. Suspense and its release is a theme for Language of Silence, as tracks flow well into each other, and elements take their time in building up to a paced crescendo of falling bass and broken dance beats (as they do in "Closer"). This effect is heightened by the build up by tracks that flirt ...

Decoded Feedback Mechanical Horizon CD  (2000)

Technophoby album

This is an enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Mechanical Horizon is a release that reinforces Decoded Feedback's reputation of being able to put a solid album together. Washes of sound serve as a backdrop for solid-beat electro arrangements, the bass vocals of Marco Biagotti completing a picture of a broken darkwave future. Mechanical Horizon is a welcome addition at a time when many electro-industrial artists are taking cues from the rise of the synth pop scene. Decoded Feedback provides a contrast to this, sporting a darkness and gravity in its arrangements and mixing soft- and hard-edged electro sounds, without overburdening the music with noise and ambience. Tracks do not race against the beats-per-minute counter but retain their impact (such as "Immortal"). The dark EBM feel also works well in the ...

CD $16.09  5 stars Audio Samples
This Is Neo-Goth is yet another daunting three-disc package from Cleopatra, one that compiles 27 industrial-dance tracks for the first two discs and then provides a mix from adequate Hawaiian DJ RiB (aka Razed in Black, who also contributes the song "Share This Poison") for the third. It's a fair and hardly definitive selection (considering the title), including material from Orgy, Velvet Acid Christ, :wumpscut, Electric Hellfire Club, Strawberry Switchblade, Wolfsheim, VNV Nation, and Spahn Ranch. Fans of these groups might enjoy the mix disc, which is pulled off with a good degree of ...

Tex Morton was born in New Zealand but became Australia's Jimmie Rodgers, setting the foundation for the development of country music on that continent. His style, though audibly derived from Rodgers, is nonetheless his own -- his yodeling technique is full of trills and eccentric flourishes, and he fought to include Australian material in his recorded repertoire from the very beginning. With only an acoustic guitar for accompaniment, ...
