The subject matter of Buy Me...I'll Change Your Life is similar to previous Snog releases, railing against the hollowness and abuses of capitalist culture, but the group draws from a more musically varied palette, slowing down the tempo to produce almost soundtrack-like music and even covering a Lee Hazelwood song. ~ Steve Huey

What do you do when you've already changed the face of music once in a decade? If you're Bristol, UK sonic architects Massive Attack, you refine the model for the times. MEZZANINE, the third album from the producer/DJ crew who, for all intents and purposes, created the genre of trip-hop, is thicker, less spacious and far more guitar-heavy than their previous efforts. Then again, the blue-print remains: hip-hop beats, behemoth bass underpinnings and spare melodic overtones still control Massive Attack's drive. After all, one doesn't expect the inventors to abandon their discoveries just because every pop new jack is onto their gold mine.

Thrussell's vocals are delivered in the Skinny Puppy-vein: slow and digitally low. The beats, fast or slow, are painfully dense and heavy. Standouts include the punishing single "Corporate Slave," a searing indictment of business culture; "Hey, Christian God," an attack on the monetary side of religion, complete with cash register sounds and a morose horn section; and the live "Real Wise Yuppie / Born to Be Mild," which is radically slowed-down, and structured around a somewhat unexpectedly sad piano line.
