Purchase Tour De Force CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Alphaville Forever Young CD (1984)
Tour De Force album
$10.35 The Claudias, Gulfstream, The Rosie Singers, Wednesday (background vocals).
Named after Godard's 1959 science-fiction masterpiece and heavily influenced by '80s synth bands like Depeche Mode, Alphaville was the Munich-based trio of Marian Gold, Bernhard Lloyd and Frank Mertens. Their 1984 debut, FORVER YOUNG, features somber but catchy synth-pop ...
| | This Is Neo-Goth CDs (2003)
Tour De Force CD music
$16.09 This Is Neo-Goth is yet another daunting three-disc package from Cleopatra, one that compiles 27 industrial-dance tracks for the first two discs and then provides a mix from adequate Hawaiian DJ RiB (aka Razed in Black, who also contributes the song "Share This Poison") for the third. It's a fair and hardly definitive selection (considering the title), including material from Orgy, Velvet Acid Christ, :wumpscut, Electric Hellfire Club, Strawberry Switchblade, Wolfsheim, VNV Nation, and Spahn Ranch. Fans of these groups might enjoy the mix disc, which is pulled off with a good degree of skill. ...

$11.39 New Order 316 captures the band live in two different locations, and almost two decades apart. The first concert takes place in New York on November 18th, 1981, and includes classic early material such as "Temptation," "Everything's Gone Green," ...
| | Switchblade Symphony Sweet Little Witches CD (2003)
Tour De Force songs
$13.69 Given the darkwave scene's life-sustaining cliquishness and the importance of Switchblade Symphony to that community, it's no surprise that the Bay Area group's mystique thrived there even after it announced a hiatus in 1999. Sweet Little Witches acts as an official bootleg, collecting 14 live performances and a bonus video track for "Dirty Dog." It covers the main points of all three Switchblade studio efforts, drawing mainly from a 1997 show at the Trocadero in Philadelphia and a set at California's Ventura Theatre from 1999. The mix is incredibly pristine throughout, and the audiences prove to be quite attentive, preferring polite, fawning applause and the occasional "we love you!" to raucous hoots and hollers. Tina Root's stage chatter is beguiling and delightfully eccentric; typically, her response to the adulation is to laugh in a girlish, almost surprised way that's very disarming. The frequent call-and-response meows can be trying, ...
| | I Ran: The Best Of A Flock Of Seagulls CD (2003)
Tour De Force album
$9.79 A Flock of Seagulls were the missing link between Gary Numan and Duran Duran. The Liverpool, England, new wave scenesters captured the faux-science fiction vibe of the '80s with echo-laden rock anthems, chilly love songs, and a unique, post-glam fashion sense. For their tenth "greatest hits" package -- one was an album of remixes -- they offer their fans a vanity project. Flock leader Mike Score, who from the looks of the cover art had spent the last few years immersed in endless games of Grand Theft Auto and Miami Vice reruns, has re-recorded nine of the group's best-loved tracks for the deceptively titled I Ran: The Best Of. His reverence for the material is obvious, as nary a note nor drum fill has been altered from the originals, yet the limp production, flat, factory synth patches, and uninspired vocals make the whole endeavor an exercise in bowling-alley karaoke. Why bother? The prototypes were classic decade-rendered snapshots of forward-thinking pop that transcended much of the garbage being thrown back into the cupboards of the mid-'80s Top 40 charts, and to hear them reduced to what should have been a late-night project fueled by nostalgia and a few too many beers -- but was somehow green lit for release -- is insulting to the wild-eyed romanticism that was uncorked at their inception. The inclusion of five remixes (of the new versions) by a rotating cast of nobodies only adds length to this physical manifestation of the word "unnecessary." ~ James Christopher Monger

| | Wumpscut Music For A Slaughtering Tribe CD (1997)
Tour De Force CD music
$14.69 Music for a Slaughtering Tribe is the debut album from electro icon Rudy Ratzinger (aka :wumpscut:). Opener "Soylent Green" sets the tone for the album, all blistering mechanized beats and dark, distorted vocals. However, Ratzinger possesses a sense of melody and an eclectic approach that is generally absent from purveyors of this kind of music. :wumpscut:'s music, therefore, has more in common with Skinny Puppy than fellow countrymen Die Krupps. Sometimes the tracks stretch on for a little longer than is perhaps necessary, but there are enough ideas here to keep things interesting. If one can get past Ratzinger's overly serious tone, then Music for a Slaughtering Tribe has plenty to recommend it. Album highlights: "Soylent Green," the pounding "Fear in Motion," and the creepy, sample-driven "She's Dead." ~ Jim Harper
