By combining traditional Celtic music with country and a spectacular live act, Canada's Leahy drew rave reviews, and their self-titled debut is the closest you can get to the excitement of a Leahy concert. The two best tracks are undoubtedly "The Call to Dance" and "B Minor," which both have accompanying videos as well. The former starts quiet and slow, eventually becoming a full-blown dance tune, while the latter is the album's leadoff track and serves as a fine introduction to Leahy (foot-stomping rhythms, swirling fiddles, piano flourishes, etc.). Other highlights include "Czardas," a Hungarian dance tune that is a showcase for the talents of fiddler Donnell, and "Alabama," which creates a wonderful, festive atmosphere. Leahy's self-titled debut is a must-have for fans of expertly crafted -- and played -- world music. ~ Greg Prato

Leahy
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box contains nearly five wall-to-wall hours of great music. By including everything from early demos to Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts' solo material, DREAMS does a great job of tracing the group's musical evolution from hippie blues band to kings of Southern rock. And, while the unreleased studio version of "Statesboro Blues" included here isn't definitive, it's still mighty good-as ...
| | Poco Forgotten Trail (1969-74) CDs (1990)
Leahy
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up the Pieces," which kicks things off, through "You Better Think Twice," "C'mon," "Kind Woman," "From the Inside," "A Good Feelin' to Know," "Crazy Eyes," and on and on, this is wonderful music, ahead of its time in many ways. If Poco had arrived on the scene in the early '90s, they would have been kings of the country charts. Of course, without Poco, country music wouldn't have taken on the rock trappings that it did in the '80s and '90s. As it was, the band was considered too country for the Top 40 rock format of the time, and too rock & roll for country radio. This set is the place to start for an appreciation of the original Poco, when the group was considered to be Richie Furay's band. All the ingredients are here that made their music so delightful: ...
| | Leahy Lakefield CD (2001)
Leahy
$11.79 Principally recorded at Phase One and Cherry Beach Sound Studios, Toronto, Canada.
This is divided between instrumentals emphasizing the Celtic component of this Celtic-pop-rock group, and vocal numbers with more of an adult contemporary rock feel. It's an approach with much more crossover potential than most Celtic music, as evidenced by their success touring with Shania Twain. That doesn't mean this is better than other Celtic or Celtic-derived music, and in fact, in this case it means it's worse. Certainly their skills on fiddle (and no less than seven of the nine members play the instrument) are undoubted. But the drums have a dishearteningly slick mainstream pop thud, and the vocal material is really dull middle-of-the-road pop given Celtic trimmings. Yes, efforts to merge Celtic music with other forms to create something different and more flexible can be a good idea, but this definitely is not the best of both worlds. ~ Richie Unterberger
Three years after their auspicious, self-titled debut, the Canadian Celtic family Leahy reenter the fray with their sophomore effort, after selling 150,000 copies, a tour with Shania Twain, and a live PBS documentary under their collective belts. As Celtic music has gone in the mainstream, this set fares better than most. There is plenty of hardcore fiddling, drumming, picking, and singing. That doesn't mean, however, ...
| | Natalie Macmaster Live CDs (2002)
Leahy
$20.39 If you've been wondering what the big fuss is about Cape Breton fiddler Natalie McMaster, it may be because you haven't had the chance to see her perform live. This two-disc set doesn't provide quite the same experience as one of her concerts, but it does offer plenty of high-energy foot-stomping fun, as well as demonstrating the intriguing contrast between her concert-hall shows -- during which she dresses like Shania Twain and is accompanied by drums, electric guitar, keyboards, and percussion -- and her dancehall gigs, during which she is generally accompanied only by acoustic guitar and piano. The energy level is the same in both contexts, but the vibe, obviously, is quite different. On disc one, she skirls out her medleys of Irish, Scottish, and Canadian tunes over a bed of rock and funk grooves that mesh surprisingly well with her snappy hornpipes and jigs; on disc two, which was recorded in a small dancehall in the tiny town of Glencoe Mills, her playing is every bit as exuberant -- maybe even a bit more so, as the dancing intensifies and the temperature in the room rises. The fiddle tunes from this part of the world have a very particular flavor, and rural dancehalls like this one are their natural habitat. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Leahy In All Things CD (2004)
Leahy
$11.69 It's hard to feel sorry for Leahy, given that they've enjoyed plenty of success. But artistically, they seem to be stuck betwixt the commercial Celtic pop idea (edging into country on a couple of tracks, like "Coyote Way") and something more hardcore. It's a difficult balancing act, but this strays more to the real Celtic music side of things, with other ideas cropping up mostly during the songs. There are new age Clannad touches here and there, but they're kept small, letting the band's instrumental prowess -- which is quite formidable -- shine through often, as on "Pointe au Pic Medley" and "Gzowski Medley," where they show the kind of qualities that could make them huge on the folk festival circuit, if they chose to go that way. Of course, instead they've pursued a more mainstream path, and done it very well, which necessitates a balancing act. Curiously, although they all shine as players, the vocals are by far the weakest part of their presentation. Not awful by any means, but just not in the same class. Still, even ...
| | Poozies Infinite Blue CD (1999)
Leahy
$13.95 This turns out to be the only album this particular lineup of the Poozies made, and that's a shame, since it's such a good record, as well as being the most adventurous. Both "Neptune" and "Ma Plaid" echo work done by another folk artist, Eliza Carthy, in their arrangements and overall feel, while "Maja's Brudvals" travels to Sweden -- not a big step since accordionist Tweed also plays with Swap. While the heartbeat largely remains Scottish, with one foot very firmly planted in traditional music, they do look further outside. Yorkshire lass Rusby brings a vocal assurance to the proceedings that had been missing on earlier albums, and a focal point around which to build songs, while still making her contributions felt in the instrumental sets. This is where the Poozies really seem to blossom ...
| | Lily Yuan Ancient Art Music Of China CD (1990) (Import)
Leahy
$14.55 This CD of ancient art music of China presents the yangqin (pronounced yang chin) performed by Lily Yuan, one of the foremost Chinese yangqin players. The instrument is a hammered dulcimer; that is to say, the Chinese version of the East European cimbalom or the Indian and Middle East santur. It has strings stretched over a wooden sound box, and the strings are hit by bamboo beaters. As many Chinese instruments, it came to China through Middle East, and most possibly Persia. Previously, it was an accompaniment instrument. It is only recently that it has become ...
| | John Breen CD (2004)
Leahy
$9.59 The John Breen album combines the best of traditional Irish music with unique contemporary interpretations of the same by the world music influenced "Mad Hatter's Celtic Orchestra." The songs reflect both the ballads that John Breen is best known for along with the kind of rollicking good fun associated with Ireland's foot tapping Celtic beats. John's album is a concept album delivering a fresh perspective of songs with roots rich in tradition yet broadened by music schooled in dynamics and foundation, intelligently embracing the sounds of ancient Celtic times and interweaving it with the Ireland of today. This is an album of Celtic passion delivered in John Breen's compelling vocal styling that truly instills a desire to listen to it one more time. Producer Steven Hawkins draws from a diverse range of traditional music styles, sounds and instrumentation, and explores a unique and refreshingly modern approach to roots-based Celtic music. The arrangements are different from what anyone might expect. In past years, John Breen has performed with his own band, to sharing the stage with Boru, The Dublin Rogues, The Dublin City Ramblers, and Liam O' Faoilin to name a few. Currently John is touring in Europe with his band Finan. With original songs included on this release, proving John's capacity for writing as well as singing, this debut album is truly a first in what we are certain will be many future albums throughout John Breen's flourishing career. Performances:John Breen - vocal & acoustic guitar Ken Burns ...
