Acoustic guitarist Billy McLaughlin successfully combines technical prowess with musical sensitivity on FINGERDANCE. Throughout, McLaughlin serves the song and never is tempted by flash, glitz, or ego. This makes FINGERDANCE a very sincere, mature, and rewarding musical offering.
The native Minnesotan has long been celebrated for his adept finger tapping skills. On FINGERDANCE he puts this technique to work, sounding at times like a folksy version of Stanley Jordan. His unique approach to the guitar is best heard on the title track, "Fingerdance." Backed by some sparse percussion, McLaughlin mixes Celtic riffs with his own distinctive harmonic concepts. Another stunning track is "While She Sleeps." Here, McLaughlin sounds like two guitarists as he plays both a melody and a countermelody simultaneously. "Dreaming on a Runway" and the album's closer "Blaise's Ballad" show a more contemplative McLaughlin. On these solo guitar compositions, McLaughlin's style becomes more flowing and legato. Weaving together delicate melodies with wistful arpeggios, these pastoral pieces quickly become the album's highlights.

| | Greg Howe CD (1988)
Fingerdance music CDs
$14.55 During the mid- to late '80s, talent scout and Shrapnel Records owner Mike Varney was the ultimate source for new high-tech guitar virtuosos in the post-Yngwie Malmsteen era (Malmsteen was also one of his finds). Among the dozens of young guns who emerged from Varney's stable, Greg Howe was one of the best. His debut album, Greg Howe, was groove-based, and favored funk and fusion flavors over gothic neo-classicism. It ...

| | Sleepless In Seattle CD (1993) Original Soundtrack
Fingerdance album
$6.09 Nowadays, when a director makes a film, the priority seems to lie as much in the managing of the movie's genesis as it is in creating a perfect soundtrack. While the script, the actors and the production values can establish a film's mood and direction, a well-sculpted soundtrack can seal that feeling, adding the final piece to a successful puzzle. When successful, soundtracks can even add an extra dimension to the finished project. The soundtrack to SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE is such a triumph, working precisely beacuse of the sustained, timeless romanticism of its collection of standards.
This romantic film required an ageless repetoire. Thus, the songs that were chosen all bear a distinct lyrical and melodic focus. The love story on the screen also demanded sentimentalism, so the producers went straight to the source--the movies--and brought back some of Hollywood's most endearing chestnuts. Great writers like Harry Ruby, Oscar Hammerstein, Hoagy Carmichael and Jule Styne are represented with an eclectic assortment of unique interpretations by the likes of Jimmy Durante, Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole. These standard-bearers are joined by current artists like Rickie Lee Jones, Joe Cocker and Celine Dion, who put their own stamp on some ...

| | Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & T Together CD (1969) Bonus Tracks
Fingerdance music CDs
$19.95 The least impressive of the ubiquitous quintet's original albums, Together was largely marred by the same problems that afflicted Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mich & Tich's most recent singles -- the awareness that they'd taken their original flamboyance as far as it could go, and uncertainty as to how to proceed. Certainly "Snake in the Grass" was little more than a throwaway when compared to the band's past glories, while the ambitions that would ultimately sunder the group were also beginning to bubble through. Dave Dee himself produced six of the songs on the album, and his inexperience shows in the lifelessness that afflicts such lightweight efforts as "First Time Loving," "Mountains of the Moon," and a trio of double-entendre-ridden numbers ("Below the Belt," "Love Is a Drum," and "P Teaser") that are little more than execrable exercises in smutty juvenilia. It's not all bad, of course. "Margareta Lidman," an ode to one of Beaky's ex-girlfriends, has a proto-prog drive all its own, together with a truly ear-opening Dozy solo, while "Don Juan" was an ultra-atmospheric romp through the backstreets and alleyways of Pamplona. Unfortunately, those same two songs were coupled on the band's latest single -- so, once you'd picked up that, what did you need the album for? ~ Dave Thompson
