The warm electronics of this album put German wunderkind b. fleischmann in league with fellow IDM-ers Thomas Brinkman and Dettinger. Since his first release, POP LOOPS FOR BREAKFAST, b. fleischmann has been compared to a more melodic version of these techno minimalists.
Sliced and diced rhythms, layered bubbling electronics and synthesizers blanket pleasant, childlike tunes. Created on one machine, the sounds communicate via sparse beats and simplistic patterns. A CHOIR OF EMPTY BEDS forges into the same territory expertly explored on POP LOOPS, but with more music box melodies. On "Open End," a thick tone of repetitive chords underlays a high dissonant tone, encased by vibraphone-like samples, and skimmed by oscillating whistles and snare drum whispers. Most songs on this album chime along with this low-key theme, never straying too far away from the playful feel of the first album.
Recorded at Amann Studios, Vienna, Austria. Includes liner notes by Pierre Bourdieu.

Choir Of Empty Beds
$15.05 When Jonas Bering followed up Bienfait a few months after release with the Emballages 12", it was apparent that the Frenchman was beginning to develop a thicker, fuller, more dance-oriented sound -- a sound that was also beginning to shed the inspirations that were previously perceptible to a fault. This progression continued up to the release of Sketches for the Next Season; another pair of Kompakt twelves -- including Normandie, one of the label's best of 2003 -- along with an excellent release for Logarythm (as En:no) and a contribution to Sentrall's Drive the Five series ("Down to Big Sur," a shuffle-tech track on par with the best Schaffelfieber entries) all paved the way. With the exception of "Normandie 1," Sketches for the Next Season is made up from all-new material, and though its formatting lends itself to home listening, it's a lot more likely to induce bodily movements than Bienfait. Once upon a time, Bering's basslines were deliberate and perceptible, if not all that substantial when placed in a club context. The basslines here ...
| | Kaito Hundred Million Love Years CD (2006) (Import) Germany
Choir Of Empty Beds
$16.55 After the charm of Kaito's first disc won over the hearts of trance music naysayers and won favor with the hard-hearted ambient purists via the beatless version of the album, Kompakt began a mild onslaught of releases exploring the melodic, epic side of techno that bordered on progressive house/trance. Many of these records infused the spirit and romanticism of early Detroit releases with the dramatic arrangements of European electronic music from the early '90s. And while a few hit the mark dead on, there were others that never really captured the formula quite as well as Kaito. So with Hundred Million Light Years, Kaito retains that blueprint and expands further upon his musical vocabulary to keep things moving in a progressive direction (progressive in the evolutionary sense, not the stylistic). The album's opener "Color of Feels" and "Hundred Million Light Years" are reminiscent of Carl Craig's epic ...

Choir Of Empty Beds
$14.65 Progressive rock trio Cairo's third release should provide heaps of entertainment for those who enjoy the multi-layered keyboard inventions of ELP, Yes, and many of the fabled '70s and early-'80s British Canterbury Scene aggregations. Here, the band garners assistance from guitarist Brian Hutchinson, bassist John Evans, and others, ...
| | Gentle Giant Giant For A Day: 35th Anniversary Edition CD (1978) Anniversary Edition
Choir Of Empty Beds
$10.95 When one considers the musical achievements of Gentle Giant. . . the composition and execution of some of the best progressive rock from 1971-1976. . . one wonders why this talented band would lower themselves to 4/4 rockers and five-minute ballads? The fairy-tale "rise of punk/fall of prog" of the '70s led to The Missing Piece (1977), which found the band testing waters with more "normal" songs and a diluted complexity. Outside pressure for sales and a dwindling ...
