Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Academy Awards; English Subtitles; Behind The Scenes Al Pacino plays a ferocious and fed-up bank robber in Lumet's classic film DOG DAY AFTERNOON. Balancing suspense, violence, and humor, the film's depiction of a grand-scale media event craftily dives from the political to the personal, evoking a piercing portrait of a man and his devastating downward tumble as seen through the media circus that Lumet made a career of chronicling. Pacino is heartbreakingly real as Sonny, a smart yet self-destructive Brooklyn tough whose plan to rob the local bank to fund his male lover's (Chris Sarandon) sex change goes absurdly wrong. Accompanied only by his doltish accomplice, Sal (John Cazale), Sonny realizes that all the money had been removed before his arrival, and decides to kidnap a handful of bank employees instead. As the lengthy August day drags on, Sonny and hordes of local police, led by Sergeant Moretti (Charles Durning), make little progress, and eventually Sonny's wife and lover are brought to the scene. The crowd's sympathy is immediately captured by the charismatic Sonny, whose antagonism with the police is played out before an audience of millions, leading to an inevitably tragic finish. Theatrical release: September 21, 1975.
Filmed on location in New York City.
In real life, Pacino's character, Sonny Wortzik, was serving a 20-year federal prison sentence while the film was being made. Dog Day Afternoon Quotes/Excerpts: "He wants to know when you'll be through."--Jenny (Carol Kane), repeating to Sonny (Al Pacino) what her husband is asking her on the phone as he's robbing the bank
"No, I don't want to be paid, I don't need to be paid. Look, I'm here with my partner and nine other people, see. And we're dying, man. You know? You're going to see our brains on the sidewalk, they're going to spill our guts out. Now, are you going to show that on television? Have all your housewives look at that? Instead of AS THE WORLD TURNS? I mean, what do you got for me? I want something for that."--Sonny
"Attica! Attica!"--Sonny to the crowds outside the bank Dog Day Afternoon Reviews: 4 stars out of 5 -- "Pacino gives one of the performances of his career....Lumet's gritty 1970s landmark remains one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to deal with gay and transsexual characters in a relatively unsensational manner..."
-- Stephen Dalton, Uncut "DOG DAY AFTERNOON swarms with energy, excitement and drama."
-- Danny Richelieu, Widescreen Review "The combination of simmering tension, comedy and pathos is adroitly handled by the director and his excellent cast."

Dog Day Afternoon Movie Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) 17-year old girl loves dog day afternoon I saw this amazing film a few years ago and cemented my present obsession with Al Pacino, this was only the 2nd pacino film I've seen, and I fell in love, having no idea how wide Al's range was and how different the role was to Michael corleone only a year before. The dialogue is fantastic, great performances, and gorgeous cinematography. ANy big movie or al pacino fan like me will really enjoy this film Submitted by titanfan207 (Englewood, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

GRIPPING CRIME DRAMA Plot: An inept bank robber and his dimwitted buddy hold up a Brooklyn bank and everything
goes down hill from there.
Review: Al (Sonny) pacino is in fine form in this movie as is the rest of the cast. Filled
with memorable quotes bad language and black humor. This fine paced film is a trip
to 70s attitudes before political correctness you won't soon forget. Submitted by a reviewer (SOMERVILLE NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Terrific but Underrated Movie I cannot begin to describe the brillliance of this film.
I first saw Al Pacino in The Godfather. I was amazed at his stunning acting ability. I watched 100 Years, 100 Thrills and heard of this film.
Finally it was on television. Althought I was disappointed that Al didn't looks as good as he did as Michael Corleone, he was still fantastic.
He, and his fellow loser ex-convict friend rob a bank to raise money for Sonny's(Al Pacino) boyfriend to have a sex change operation.
This film is so realistic it could've been a documentary. It is also very funny, as the crowd in the streets aare on Sonny's side. The only reason to dislike this film is if you are offended by the 'f' word.
I wasn't sure, having read reviews on the film before seeing the film, if I thought Al Pacino could pull off frome being a gorgeous, calm and extremely intelligent gangster to being a slightly crazy, bisexual bankrobber. He does, and does it amazingly. WATCH THIS FILM! Submitted by a reviewer (England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$8.95 Director John Boorman's harrowing adaptation of James Dickey's best-selling novel is a nightmarish descent into backwoods Americana. When four unsuspecting urbanites head into the mountains of northern Georgia for a weekend canoe trip, they have no idea what's in store for them. The group's macho leader, Lewis Medlock (Burt Reynolds), is driven by Hemingway-esque notions of man's ability to conquer nature, while his three friends--Bobby Trippe (Ned Beatty), Drew Ballinger (Ronny Cox), and Ed Gentry (Jon Voight)--aren't so sure. As the men begin to ...

$9.89 Milos Foreman's ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, based on the novel by Ken Kesey and the play by Dale Wasserman, presents a biting and ultimately tragic satire about mental institutions and the human spirit. A disturbing, witty, and electrifying drama, the film won the 1975 Academy Award for Best Picture. R.P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson), a misbehaved con who shirks authority, finds himself in an asylum after faking insanity to get out of work detail in prison. The vivacious troublemaker soon finds himself in a worse kind of prison--one presided over by the repressed, terrifyingly quiet Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), whose set of rules and regulations are meant to suppress patients' psychotic outbursts, and their spirits. It's not long before McMurphy is reaching out to his new inmates, trying desperately to bring life to an otherwise dead atmosphere. To Ratched, however, Nicholson's free spirit is as dangerous as a schizophrenic ...

$7.05 Shot on location on the crime-filled streets of New York City, Sidney Lumet's unflinching adaptation of Peter Maas's best-selling book is a rousing portrait of courage in the face of insidious corruption. This is a motif that Lumet would continue to mine in later films, including 1981's PRINCE OF THE CITY and 1997's NIGHT FALLS ON MANHATTAN. Al Pacino is forcefully ...
