Music star Prince stars as "The Kid" in this semi-autobiographical film, which follows the escapades of a tortured young musician trying to survive in a dysfunctional environment. He finds solace in the affections of a lovely young singer, but his first love is making his funky, unique brand of music, which he performs at an ultra-hip Minneapolis nightclub. The Kid must also contend with Morris, his nemesis both in music and romance
The popular soundtrack of this highly successful film contains many of Prince's most popular tunes, such as "Let's Go Crazy", "When Doves Cry", and the title song.
A brilliant, talented young musician struggles for success even as a rival musician threatens to supplant him, both professionally and romantically. "Purple Rain" features Prince, in his own inimitable style, performing many of his latest hits, including "Purple Rain," "When Doves Cry," and "Let's Go Crazy." Academy Awards: Best Original Song Score. Film debut for rock performer Prince. Purple Rain Reviews: "...When performing on-stage...[Prince] can be a riveting spectacle..."
-- Vincent Canby, New York Times "...An impressive feature film....[The concerts] are splendidly realized musicvid-type affairs, awash in purple-hued smoky lighting atmosphere and right-on camera work..."
-- Kirk., Variety "Showcasing the performer at the height of his creative and commercial success....[T]he performances are nothing short of magical."
-- Dalton Ross, Entertainment Weekly "[T]his 1994 movie brought the liquid-hipped one to middle America, mutating his funk into warped guitar rock."

Rock's Epiphany This IS the movie that changed my life. Prince broke all the rules and set about reinventing music and the movies. He told us it was okay to be different. (There is Beauty in Strangeness) Nothing would ever be the same.. truly a revolution. 20 years on and it still holds up pretty well, although we have all changed with the times (and grown a lot older). I wonder how Prince would feel watching it now...? Submitted by Ramesh Kula (Singapore) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful. This review is for a different format.
Better than first issue This is a big improvement over the first DVD issue primarily because of the widescreen aspect.
The sound is pretty close to the first, a little bit better.
I'm still disappointed by the same letdowns that are present on both.
They both do not show the closed caption during songs.
Now that this deluxe DVD has the trailers for Purple Rain, we see the obvious deleted scenes that we should have had.
the bonus materials are great, the videos and such. Submitted by Scapp70 (New York City, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

Purple Rain film
$9.49 A soundtrack to a movie so appalling that it is infinitely wiser to let the record stand on its own merits. While Prince cavorted in purple kitchen foil and rode his Harley in high heels, the real star of the film, the music, was doing all the talking. A knit of funk and rock, a heavily stylized Hendrix guitar lick here and there, and a wilfully danceable backbeat all made for a huge commercial smash, and the first real international introduction for many people to a star-in-waiting. 'Darling Nikki' accidentally set the PMRC ball rolling, but the heady lilt of the title track and the crushing 'When Doves Cry' can pardon him that.
Prince & The Revolution: Prince (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Wendy Melvoin (vocals, guitar); Lisa Coleman, Matt "Dr." Fink (vocals, keyboards); Brown Mark (vocals, bass); Bobby Z (percussion).
Engineers include: Susan Rogers, Peggy Mac, David Riukin.
Additional personnel: Apollonia (vocals); Novi Novog (violin, viola); David Coleman, Suzie Katayama (cello).
| | Club Nouveau Life, Love & Pain CD (1986)
Purple Rain review
$9.29 The funky, dance-oriented R&B act Club Nouveau stormed onto the musical scene in late 1986 with Life, Love, & Pain. Half the songs on this eight-title set received some form of airplay, but none matched the success of their lighthearted, reggae/hip-hop remake of the Bill Withers classic "Lean on Me," which topped the American pop charts for two weeks in 1987. The follow-up, "Why You Treat Me So Bad," only peaked at number 39 on the pop charts (but fared much better on the R&B charts), yet has enjoyed an equally long (if not longer) shelf life. By the end of the '90s, "Why You Treat Me So Bad" had already been sampled into two of the decade's biggest hip-hop hits: "I Got Five on It" by Luniz and "Satisfy You" by Puff Daddy and R. Kelly. The album also featured "Jealousy," which was a remake/answer song to Timex Social Club's 1986 Top Ten hit "Rumours," and the R&B hit "Situation #9." The album closes with "Pump It Up," which is a reprise of "Lean on Me." Club Nouveau never again came close to matching the success of this album or its singles. There are a few compilations on Club Nouveau, but to capture the spirit of the band at their best, go with Life, Love, & Pain. ~ Jose F. Promis
Featuring former members of Timex Social Club.

Purple Rain review For Sale Pre-Order Now! Available: Tuesday, January 12, 2010
$9.44 Small-town mechanic Benny (Aidan Quinn, LEGENDS OF THE FALL) is perhaps a tad overprotective of his mentally ill artist sister, Juniper "Joon" Pearl (Mary Stuart Masterson of FRIED GREEN TOMATOES), but that's only because he's completely devoted to her well-being. When Benny loses a poker game and is forced to take in a friend's eccentric houseguest--a droll, dyslexic oddball (Johnny Depp) who goes by the name of Sam and models himself after silent-film star Buster Keaton--Joon finds herself falling into a romance unbeknownst to her brother. Benny does eventually find out, though, and both siblings must come to terms with their changing relationship. BENNY & JOON, a must-see for Depp fans, is chockful of whimsy and affection. This charming romantic comedy co-stars Julianne Moore and William H. Macy in early film roles.
