$20.35 David Rabe's 1984 play HURLYBURLY made it to the big screen in 1998, with some well-measured performances from a cast littered with big names from the Hollywood A-list. Ostensibly Anthony Drazan's film is a riff on the empty-headedness and misogyny that runs rife throughout the Hollywood studio system. But delve beneath the depths of these surly, obstinate characters, and a cheerless, misanthropic tract on the transient nature of friendship is made manifest in this unrelenting portrait of the depths to which human beings can sink.
Mickey (Kevin Spacey) and Eddie (Sean Penn) are two casting directors who reside in a condominium secreted deep in the Hollywood Hills, where their out-of-work actor friend Phil (Chazz Palminteri) is a frequent visitor. Hollywood mogul Artie (Garry Shandling) is also an acquaintance, and loves to drop by to provide a few favors for Mickey and Eddie; one of these "favors" comes in the shapely form of Donna (Anna Paquin), whom Artie picks up whilst hitchhiking, and hands her over to the boys as a sex toy. Meanwhile, Darlene (Robin Wright Penn) seesaw's between relationships and dates with both Mickey and Eddie, causing problems when the latter forms a genuine affection for her. As if to prove he's not a lightweight ...

$7.75 Gary Sinise enters the world of futuristic action heroes in Gary Fleder's sci-fi thriller IMPOSTOR, based on a story by Philip K. Dick. Sinise stars as Spencer Olham, a weapons expert in 2079 who wakes up one morning to find himself accused of being an alien. He sets out on the run, being hunted down by Major Hathaway (Vincent D'Onofrio). He receives help from an underground leader (Mekhi Pipher), and upon returning to the city, he must convince his wife, Maya (Madeleine Stowe), and his best friend, Nelson (Tony Shalhoub), that he is indeed her husband and not some kind of robot monster with a bomb in his chest.
With IMPOSTOR, director Gary Fleder (DON'T SAY A WORD) has crafted an edgy, fast-paced film that contains elements of Alfred Hitchcock's THE WRONG MAN, Ridley Scott's BLADE RUNNER (also based on a Dick story), Andrew Davis's THE FUGITIVE, and Paul Verhoeven's ROBOCOP. Sinise gets to flex his muscles as he continually escapes from Hathaway and a torture device that Goldfinger would be proud of, the Vivisector. The futuristic, fascistic world created by production designer Nelson Coates and shot beautifully by cinematographer Robert Elswit is the ...

$11.59 On SUPER TARANTA!, its second full-length outing for the Side One Dummy label, the gypsy-punk ensemble Gogol Bordello offers up another raucous set of eclectic songs rooted in Eastern European folk music. Powered by the boundless enthusiasm of Ukrainian-born vocalist/guitarist/percussionist Eugene Hutz, the New York City-based band careens through upbeat numbers that boast leaping violin lines and swooping accordion playing, capturing the rabble-rousing spirit of early Pogues, but fueled not by Irish whiskey but by Russian vodka. While most of the tunes on SUPER TARANTA! are fast and festive (see the giddy "Wonderlust King"), Hutz and his group occasionally slow things down to a hung-over crawl (particularly on the woozy "Alcohol"), resulting ...

$6.95 Jeff Burr, known for his slasher sequels (PUMPKINHEAD 2, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3), ventures into new terrain with STRAIGHT INTO DARKNESS, a genre-bending and macabre tale set during WWII. Two Allied soldiers, the philosophical Losey (Ryan Francis) and psychotic Deming (Scott McDonald), are en route to a court marshal for a heinous war crime when an exploding mine allows them to escape into the desolate no-man's-land. Here they encounter a cannibal priest and eventually stumble on a bizarre fortress of amputees and freaks who have been trained to protect themselves from the outside world. This surreal and twisted film, half art-house ...
