THE EXORCIST is a horrifying, riveting film based on William Peter Blatty's best-seller (he also wrote the screenplay). In the ultimate transformation plot, a 12-year-old girl (Linda Blair) becomes possessed by the devil. Soon the once-sweet child beomes a murderous, vomit-spewing, bed-twirling hellhound. A dedicated but naive priest attempts to exorcise Satan from Regan's body--and in the process is forced to confront personal demons of his own. The theatrical release led to outrage, fainting, nausea--and huge box-office receipts. The result was two cash-in sequels, the second directed by Blatty. Arguably the scariest motion picture ever made, William Friedkin's THE EXORCIST was unleashed on an unsuspecting American public in 1973. The film quickly became a nationwide sensation, leading to religious boycotts, fainting, and a huge box office return. Oscar nominee Linda Blair beat out hundreds of other child actors to land the role of Regan MacNeil, a 12-year-old who is possessed by the devil. After exhausting all other practical options, Regan's mother, Chris (Ellen Burstyn), acknowledges the supernatural nature of her daughter's condition and recruits Father Damien Karras (Jason Miller) to stage an exorcism. Aided by the mysterious Jesuit exorcist Father Merrin (Max von Sydow), Father Damien must confront not only the supernatural phenomena in front of him, but also his own inadequate faith and displaced guilt over his mother's recent death.
Friedkin brings William Peter Blatty's Oscar-winning script to shocking life by establishing a realistic, everyday tone before allowing the terror to creep in. The performances of Burstyn and Miller further help to ground the supernatural events. Like THE GODFATHER before it and JAWS shortly after, the breakout success of THE EXORCIST helped to transform Hollywood into the blockbuster behemoth of American culture. Theatrical Release: December 26, 1973
Ellen Burstyn suffered permanent injury to her spine during shooting of the scene in which she is knocked across the room.
Director William Friedkin punched Father William O'Malley during the shooting of Father Karras's death scene to elicit a better performance. Exorcist Quotes/Excerpts: "What an excellent day for an exorcism."--Regan (Linda Blair) to Father Karras (Jason Miller)
"Why you do this to me, Damie?"--Regan (as Father Karras's mother) to Father Karras Exorcist Reviews: "...The first modern, F/X-heavy shriek-o-rama....[Miller and Burstyn] give harrowing, nuanced performances....Strikingly new amid [its era]..."
-- Ty Burr, Entertainment Weekly "...The EXORCIST is still one of the scariest and most adult horror movies ever..."
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...At once a religious parable, a study of tortured adolescence and a warped satire about a single-parent family, it hasn't dated in the slightest..."
-- Geoffrey Macnab, Sight and Sound

SIMPLY THE SCARIEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!! As far as I'm concerned this is the only true, scary movie ever produced! This movie pulls you in like no other! The first time I seen it, I couldn't sleep for a month! It is a masterpiece years ahead of it's time and one of the best films ever made! A must have! Stands as a great Horror Movie Standard The Exorcist is and was one of the best horror movies ever made. Being made in the 70's, it was constructed without the help of the computers and special effects of this day and age. Perhaps the commentator from Stephensville, TX should learn to read and write properly before trashing people from the 70's as "too ignorant to understand it". I am willing to bet that this reviewer hasn't a single clue as to what the movie is really about! Just go back to the video games kid... 1973...They could've done it later. This film was released back in 73 or 74.But it was not a great time to release a film like this. What were the people made it thinking. They could've made it later. In the 70s,people were so ignorant and can't take stuff like that. But at least, that the new version is worst was released in 2000.This movie is now better these days. Exorcist film
$9.69 Dario Argento and Lamberto Bava co-wrote this horror film, a huge European hit upon release. The film centers on two young girls who go to a brutal zombie movie and begin to notice happenings in theater mirroring the action on screen. Soon, half of the audience have been turned into blood thirsty zombies, forcing the remaining patrons to defend themselves from the unholy beasts. Stylish, gory, bleakly funny and reminiscent of George A. Romero's films, DEMONS is a hugely entertaining horror movie. Argento also produced and Bava, son of the legendary Mario Bava (BLACK SUNDAY), directed.
Italian horror mastermind, Dario Argento produced and co-wrote (with director Lamberto Bava) this nightmarish film set in the Metropol, a huge, cathedral-like Berlin cinema. Two girls are given free tickets to a special screening in an isolated movie theater. The film, a violent horror movie, exerts a malevolent influence over the theater patrons who are transformed - one by bloody one - into a horde of crazed demons. The musical score features Motley Crue, Scorpions, and Billy Idol. The film was inspired by a disquieting phrase ascribed to Nostradamus.

| | Haxan: Witchcraft Through The Ages DVD (1920)
Exorcist movie DVD
$31.15 An terrifying assault on the eyes, Benjamin Christensen's 1922 documentary is a landmark film of witchery, possession, and sadism. Originally released under the Swedish title HAXAN, this eerie, unusual film experience uses seven chapters to illustrate a history of myths and beliefs regarding the occult. The film uses animation, creature effects, nightmarish sets, reenactments of satanic rituals and intense sexual imagery to weave a tale that ranges from being darkly humorous to severely disturbing. The original version ran 104 minutes and exists both in black and white and in a tinted Swedish Film Institute version.
HAXAN is commonly available as the re-cut WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES, a version that runs 74 minutes. Voice over narration by William S. Burroughs and a score by Jean-Luc Ponty in this cut only strengthened the film's status as a cult classic.
104 minute DVD with music from the original Danish premiere, arranged by film music historian Gillian Anderson and performed by the Czech Film Orchestra and a soundtrack featuring Jean-Luc-Ponty.

$7.99 Ted Mikels (THE ASTRO-ZOMBIES) directed this campy, low budget horror movie that stars the fetching Lila Zaborin as Mara, Queen of the Black Witches. Situated in a rather ominous (and fake) looking castle, Mara, with the aid of a gaggle of maiden disciples, lures men into her lair and sacrifices them to punish those who have persecuted witches. As she becomes more brazen, Mara attracts the attention of Dr. Helsford, a parapsychology professor whose familiarity with dark magic sends him on a quest to destroy the Queen of the Black Witches.
