Professor Harold Hill, a travelling salesman, makes his living by duping small towns into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' marching band. Hill sells parents on the idea by promising to teach the boys how to play, but as soon as they hand over their money, he skips out. His latest stop is River City, Iowa, where he soon has the locals up in arms over the threat to public morals posed by the neighborhood pool hall; how better to save their sons' souls than by creating a boys' band? Only one thing stands between Hill and success: the town's pretty but skeptical librarian, who threatens to expose his schemes -- if she doesn't declare her love for him first.

An energetic con artist convinces the citizens of a small turn-of-the-century community to form a boy's band - which he plans to lead. This classic Hollywood musical features such hits as "76 Trombones," "Ya Got Trouble," and many more. Academy Award Nominations: 6, including Best Picture. Academy Awards: Best Adapted Score.

Originally produced for the Broadway stage by Kermit Bloomgarden with Herbert Greene in association with Frank Productions, Inc. Director Morton Da Costa also directed the stage musical. Appearing in both the stage and film versions were Robert Preston, Pert Kelton, Paul Ford, and the Buffalo Bills, among others. Ronny Howard's father, Rance, appears in the film as "Oscar Jackson." The barbershop quartet "The Buffalo Bills" were Al Shea (who played Ewart Dunlop), Wayne Ward (Oliver Hix), Vern Reed (Jacey Squires), and Bill Spangenberg (Olin Britt). Additional cast: Monique Vermont (as Amaryllis), Ronnie Dapo (Norbert Smith), Jesslyn Fax (Avis Grubb), Patty Lee Hilka (Gracie Shinn), Garry Potter (Dewey), J. Delos Jewkes (Harley MacCauley), Ray Kellogg (Harry Joseph), William Fawcett (Lester Lonnergan), Roy Dean (Gilbert Hawthorne), David Swain (Chet Glanville), Arthur Mills (Herbert Malthouse), Rand Barker (Duncan Shyball), Jeannine Burnier (Jessie Shyball), Shirley Claire (Amy Dakin), Natalie Core (Truthful Smith), Therese Lyon (Dolly Higgins), Penelope Martin (Lila O'Brink), Anne Loos (Stella Jackson), Peggy Wynne (Ada Nutting), Natalie Masters (Farmer's Wife), Peggy Mondo (Townswoman), Sarah Seeger (Townswoman), Adnia Rice (Townswoman), Maudie Prickett (Townswoman), and Charles Perchesky (Salesman). Featured RCA six-track magnetic stereophonic sound. In his 1995 memoir, "My American Journey," General Colin Powell lists "The Music Man" as one of his favorite films.

4 stars Fair Rendition of Great Musical
"Either you are closing your eyes to a situation you do not choose to acknowledge, or you are not aware of the caliber of disaster indicated by the presence of a pool atble in your community"- so begins "Trouble" one of many great songs in this solid joyous tale. Meredith Willson sweated and honed it to perfection. Watch for the first rap song ever (Rock Island). Enjoy

5 stars Phenomenal!
This is the best musical ever produced. No one but Robert Preston could have played the main character. And Meredith Wilson's score is unbelievably imaginative.

5 stars My favourite musical.
This is definitely a Robert Preston film - I can't think of any other artist who could play the part. The music and the choregoraphy are excellent, the library sequence is superb and the grand finale s triumph in film musicals.

5 stars One of the Best Musical Comedies of All Time
This movie is worth watching for the sets and costumes alone. But the dancing, singing and storyline are so much fun that you are a little sad when it ends. The Music Man is a guaranteed heart warmer - the cast is more than perfect and by the end of the movie you wish you lived in River City, Iowa.

Coming along in the summer of 1962, four and a half years after the Broadway opening, the film version of The Music Man appeared in an era when Hollywood was more likely to be faithful to stage musicals, rather than dramatically altering them, as had been the practice in the past. The Music Man found Robert Preston re-creating his starring role as conman Professor Harold Hill, intent on swindling the good people of River City, IA, by selling them on a fictitious boys' band, and some minor roles were also filled by the Broadway originals. More important, Meredith Willson's score was rendered intact, the only change being a revision of the song "My White Knight" into "Being in Love." The major casting change was the substitution of Shirley Jones, who had a box-office track record, for Barbara Cook, who did not, in the role of Marian the librarian. Cook may have been preferable, but Jones handled the part well, too. Musically, the big change had to do with scale; the Broadway pit orchestra and original cast were replaced by a vast Hollywood orchestra and chorus, and musical director Ray Heindorf made the most of the larger effects on songs like "Seventy Six Trombones." Still, the music fan who already owned a copy of the original Broadway cast recording didn't really need to plump for the original motion picture soundtrack, which didn't keep the album from racing up the charts and going gold as the film became one of the year's top grossers. But it remains ...

DVD $9.69  4.3 stars Top 500
Based on the Broadway show from the Damon Runyon short story and filled to the brim with Frank Loesser tunes such as "Luck Be a Lady" and "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat," this outrageously comic film featuring Marlon Brando's bold musical debut is a colorful tale about gamblers, a feisty Salvation Army lass, and a dance-hall girl with a pining heart. Veteran gambler Sky Masterson (Brando) takes a bet from Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) that he can win the affection of a "soldier" (Jean Simmons) in the Salvation Army, setting himself up to lose both his money and his heart. Romance is the last thing the gambler and the missionary expect, and they fight against their attraction for all they're worth in glowing singing and dancing numbers. Love proves to be contagious as spicy dancer Miss Adelaide, in a role re-created for the screen from Broadway by showstopper Vivian Blaine, is determined to get her fiancé, Nathan, to the altar one way or another. Stubby Kaye and B.S. Pully also ...

A priceless classic, MY FAIR LADY has become one of the most popular musicals of all time. Based on George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play PYGMALION, the film swept the Academy Awards. Cecil Beaton's lavish sets and costumes and Lerner and Loewe's winning score became the background for George Cukor's striking mix of styles that ranged from the fantastic to the abstract in his telling of the tale of a waif who's educated into being a lady. Egotistical linguist Professor Henry Higgins (Oscar-winning Rex Harrison) bets his friend, Colonel Hugh Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White), that he can transform Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) in time for an important society ball. His gamble could pay off--but the spirited Eliza is more of a handful than the ...

In the Oregon Territory, mountain man Adam Pontipee (Howard Keel, acting and singing with gusto) comes to town to sell his crops and woo a woman to be his wife, succeeding with spirited Milly (Jane Powell), who is tired of feeding and waiting on so many men at the local inn. Her dreams of keeping house for just one man are shattered when she discovers that Adam shares his pigsty cabin with six brawling brothers. Milly's good cooking and stubborn nature whip the young men into shape and inspire them to seek women of their own. In early-20th-century Yonkers, a wealthy local merchant, Horace Vandergelder (played by Walter Matthau), hires matchmaker Dolly Levi (Barbra Streisand) to find a mate for him--but instead she decides to win him over for herself. His life is further complicated by his young niece, Ermengarde, who is determined to wed an artist Horace finds entirely unsuitable, and by his two hapless employees, who against Horace's wishes leave work to venture into New York so each can kiss a girl. Miserly, curmudgeonly, irascible Horace finds that matters have gotten completely out of his control--and the only person who seems to know exactly what is going on is the widowed Dolly Levi. The film is based on a succession of source material, beginning with the 1835 British play A DAY WELL SPENT by John Oxenford, Thornton Wilder's 1938 play THE MERCHANT OF YONKERS, and Wilder's successful 1954 adaptation of his own play, renamed THE MATCHMAKER, ...
