Actor-director Kevin Allen's (TWIN TOWN) hilarious mockumentary stars Craig Ferguson (who co-wrote the film) as Scottish hairdressing "artiste" Crawford Mackenzie. Crawford is going to L.A. to participate in the World Hairdressing International Federation's renowned Platinum Scissors competition, the apex of the styling world. Sporting his tartan suit, with documentary filmmaker Martin Samuels (Chris Langham) in tow, Crawford arrives only to learn that he was invited to attend, not compete in the Hair Off. Upset but determined, Crawford vows to get his H.A.G (Hairdressers of America Guild) card - the requirement for entry. To do so, he must work for one day in an American salon, but is laughed out the door at Valhenna, the shop of super-stylist Stig Ludwigssen (David Rasche). With new friend, limo driver/actor Eamonn (Donal Logue), Crawford finagles the assistance of publicist Candy Harper (Frances Fisher) on his quest. Will the WHIF president (Mary McCormack) allow Crawford to compete for his family and friends back in Scotland? Or will Norwegian nemesis Stig ruin everything? Boasting a parade of celebrity cameos from Drew Carey to Veronica Webb, Allen's film is highly entertaining and creates genuine, charming characters worth cheering for.

THE BIG TEASE is a charming mockumentary of the competitive side of Hollywood and awards shows in general. Ferguson (who co-wrote the screenplay) is Crawford Mackenzie, a Scottish hairdresser who travels to Los Angeles to participate in the World Freestyle Hairdressing Championship in the hopes of taking home the Golden Scissor Award. Once there, he encounters a barrage of off-the-wall characters as he tries to climb the social ladder and take home the prize.

Original release date: January 28, 2000 (LA/NY) February 18, 2000 (EXPANDED) Director Kevin Allen is also an actor- most notably in British comedic television series THE THIN BLUE LINE, and films including TRAINSPOTTING and SPICE WORLD. Allen has acted in both of the films he has directed. He plays Gareth, Crawford's boyfriend in THE BIG TEASE. Craig Ferguson (Crawford Mackenzie) is probably best known to American audiences for his role as Nigel Wick in the television series THE DREW CAREY SHOW. In addition to co-writing and executive producing THE BIG TEASE, Craig Ferguson also co-wrote, co-produced and stars in SAVING GRACE (2000).

Blackfoot Siogo CD  (1983)

Big Tease film
CD $10.49  4.4 stars Top 500
Blackfoot was always the heaviest of the great Southern rock movement, and on Siogo(reputedly either a Native American word for "closeness" or a crude groupie acronym, probably the latter) the boys try to break into the metal market and regain their brief hold on American audiences. Staunch metallists will recognize the touch of producer Al Nalli (from Axe's similarly excellent Nemesis) and a new bit of European muscle from Uriah Heep's Ken Hensley on the keyboards. Although cliched throughout, powerful performances send openers "Send Me an Angel," "Run for Cover," and "Drivin' Fool" to lofty hard rock heights. "We're Goin' Down" nips the riff from "Double Vision," while "Goin' in Circles" and the micro-hit "Teenage Idol" thunder like late Rainbow. "Heart's Grown Cold" treats the Nazareth dirge like a lost classic, and ...

Like their Native American ancestors before them, the members of Blackfoot must have known what it felt like to be exiled from their homeland. Only, rather than being forced into an Indian reservation, the world's first all-Native American hard rock band found itself trying to scrape together a good wage across the pond, where U.K. audiences couldn't seem to get enough of its uniquely metallic, Skynyrd-derived Southern rock. Despite experiencing diminishing returns in the good ol' U.S. of A., all three of their studio albums for Atco had been warmly embraced here, leading to nearly two years of incessant touring. Such acclaim eventually led to demands for a live album, which the band duly recorded with the help of the Rolling Stones' mobile studio during a three-month jaunt across the British Isles in 1982. Named Highway Song Live after the band's biggest (and most "Freebird"-like) hit, it was recorded in the spirit of the classic live albums of the '70s, with explosive performances of such Blackfoot favorites as "Road Fever," "Every Man Should ...

CD $10.49  3.8 stars Top 500
Although they'd managed to become bona fide second-division stars in England, where their incomparably heavy brand of Southern rock and devastating live performances had thrilled nostalgic Skynyrd disciples and open-minded metalheads alike, Blackfoot had made dispiritingly little commercial headway in their own backyard: the American market. So as pressure mounted to deliver a hit for their label, Atco, Rickey Medlocke decided to invite former Uriah Heep keyboard player Ken Hensley to join the band -- a calculated move intended to modernize the group's sound for the synth-happy 1980s. But 1983's Siogo, though seemingly a passable compromise, still failed to yield any hits, so Blackfoot were literally put on notice prior to getting to work on their next effort, which was rejected upon initial delivery under the working title of Cry of the Banshee. The band was ordered back into the studio to try again, only ...

Henry Paul Feel The Heat CD  (1980)

Big Tease video
CD $10.49  5 stars Top 500
Whatever happened to Henry Paul between the release of his band's debut album in 1979 and Feel the Heat in 1980 wasn't healthy. Whereas Grey Ghost was a record full of influences ranging from the Eagles to the Byrds to the Allmans and Lynyrd Skynrd tossed into a Southern-fried salad with Paul's own country, rock, and folk sensibilities, Feel the Heat feels like jarhead, clichéd Southern boogie rock. All the gorgeous harmonies, complex dynamics, tight songs, and sparking arrangements have been tossed over in favor of a heavy-handed collection of tired riffs, stupid lyrics, and themes that are saturated with drinking, picking up girls, and yeah, "Let's R-O-C-K." A harder edge isn't the problem; there's nothing wrong with turning up the volume, unless you leave your imagination behind in the process and settle for a lowest common denominator set of songs and even worse rock & roll monotony. There is evidence that Paul hasn't totally lost it on "Running Away," but this is unfortunately fleeting. Whereas the harmonies and arrangements are nice and tight, the track still suffers from stupid lyrics and an overburdened twin-guitar sound. In fact, the band is so riff-heavy and melody is so absent, ...

Henry Paul Grey Ghost CD  (1979)

Henry Paul was a rhythm guitarist and vocalist for the Outlaws. He left the group in 1977 after its third album. He formed the Henry Paul Band in 1978 and signed to Atlantic later that year. Grey Ghost is the band's debut, and it is drenched in Southern rock influences as well as those of '70s West Coast bands such as the Eagles. The opening cut, "So Long," combines folk, country-rock, and the over the top guitar punch of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers, while "Crossfire" sounds like the Joe Walsh-era Eagles jamming with the Pure Prairie League and "Foolin'" has the Byrds' signature all over it. But to say that Paul and his band merely copied what was out there wouldn't be fair. Grey Ghost is a fine album; the songcraft is tight and crisp, the lead and harmony vocals are crystalline, and the production is unobtrusive. But those twin guitar leads that sound like they come from the Allmans' "Ramblin' Man" are a bit derivative sounding. The title track is the best thing on the record. Written in 1977, it is an uncredited but undisguised tribute to the late Ronnie VanZant ...
