In a lavish 18th century parlor in Austria, an elderly man is found, by his servant, with his throat slashed. The wound is self-inflicted, and the man is the little-known composer Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), contemporary and adversary of the now-famed, but once reviled, composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce). Later, from his cell in an insane asylum, Salieri tells a priest (Herman Meckler) the story of his association with Mozart, confessing that he actually killed the brilliantly gifted but troubled young man. Based on the award-winning play by Peter Shaffer, Milos Forman's riveting, brilliant, Oscar-winning AMADEUS is a fictionalized account of the real-life mysterious death of Mozart. Abraham, in the role that won him the Best Actor Oscar, is the celebrated court composer to Joseph II (Jeffrey Jones)--his confidence and religious dedication shaken when he meets the boorish 26-year-old Mozart as he chases his future wife (Elizabeth Berridge) around a party while making obscene remarks. Furious that this clownish boy can produce such beautiful music, Salieri determines to keep Mozart's talent from lasting recognition and sets himself on a course for Mozart's destruction that leads to his own as well. Mozart continues to mount beautiful, moving operas (incredibly staged in the film), but becomes obsessed with writing a Requiem as his friends, family, health, and resources waste away, Salieri's manipulating presence always there. It is hard to imagine anyone--whether they are knowledgeable about classical music or not--who would not be held captive by this superb feast for the eyes and ears, a film whose excellence can be felt in every detail.

Shot on location in Prague, Czechoslovakia. AMADEUS is number 53 on the American Film Institute's list of America's 100 Greatest Movies. The opera sets were designed by Josef Svoboda. The staging of DON GIOVANNI in the film was shot at the Tyl Theater, the actual site where Mozart conducted the opera's premiere some 200 years earlier.

5 stars One of the best movies ever
Amadeus has all the right stuff for any movie fan. Grand scale story line, visuals, drama, and music. Perhaps because it's a take on Mozart and what might have been but really because the director etc. took this story to heart and made sure that every aspect reflected it in every way. The end result is brilliant and memorable on so many levels. Amadeus will Always stand as a Truly Great Classic movie.

A bit dated in it's style but a good story, beautifully shot and the music... well it is Mozart. The competition between these two masters is a very interesting way of telling the story.

This film is another classic masterpiece. The soundtrack makes the movie of course. It shows you an in depth look at his life and how he might have died. Great movie.

It could be argued that without REM's hit single "Man on the Moon" there wouldn't have been an Andy Kaufman biopic in 1999, so it was only appropriate that director Milos Forman hired the band to write the score for his film. Based on score excerpts on the Man on the Moon soundtrack, they've made some intriguing music, drawing heavily from the spirit and textures of Automatic for the People, but the record itself only give hints of the score. Since this is a soundtrack, and not a score album, there are other songs missing here that are heard in the movie, and as a '90s soundtrack, it also has snippets of dialogue scattered throughout its entirety. As a matter of fact, it often feels like the music is merely a device to connect dialogue and comedic songs, including Kaufman's signature "Mighty Mouse Theme," two songs performed by Jim Carrey (one as Kaufman, one as his alter-ego Tony Clifton), a duet between REM and Carrey's Kaufman and Clifton, and an archival Kaufman performance from a 1982 appearance on David Letterman. Throw in REM's "Man on the Moon" plus their tailored-for-the-film "The Great Beyond" (a solid but blatant, uplifting rewrite of "Man on the Moon"), Bob James' "Angela (Theme from Taxi)," and Exile's "Kiss You All Over," and you have precious ...

Matrix DVD  (1999)

With THE MATRIX, the Wachowskis have established themselves as innovative filmmakers who push the boundaries of live-action films. Like the groundbreaking STAR WARS, THE MATRIX (also the first film of a trilogy) showcases a unique visual style, one the Wachowskis achieved through an array of techniques and digital effects, some never before seen in mainstream Hollywood films. Although computer morphing technology had been used before in films such as THE ABYSS and TERMINATOR 2, the Wachowskis were the first to use "bullet time," a time-bending digital effect that utilizes both computer-generated imagery and still photography. The film itself is a complex story that aspires to mythology, focusing on a computer hacker named Neo (Keanu Reeves) who searches for the truth behind the mysterious force known as the Matrix. He finds his answer with a group of strangers led by the charismatic Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). What they encounter in confronting that truth makes for a lightning-paced, eye-popping thrill ride of a movie. Packed with stunning fight scenes (choreographed by accomplished Hong Kong director Yuen Wo-Ping), astonishing visual effects, ...

Milos Foreman's ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, based on the novel by Ken Kesey and the play by Dale Wasserman, presents a biting and ultimately tragic satire about mental institutions and the human spirit. A disturbing, witty, and electrifying drama, the film won the 1975 Academy Award for Best Picture. R.P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson), a misbehaved con who shirks authority, finds himself in an asylum after faking insanity to get out of work detail in prison. The vivacious troublemaker soon finds himself in a worse kind of prison--one presided over by the repressed, terrifyingly quiet Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), whose set of rules and regulations are meant to suppress patients' psychotic outbursts, and their spirits. It's not long before McMurphy is reaching out to his new inmates, trying desperately to bring life to an otherwise dead atmosphere. To Ratched, however, ...

DVD $6.29  3.7 stars Top 500
Director Tim Burton unleashes MARS ATTACKS!, a vicious, affectionate, brightly-colored homage to 1950s alien invasion movies. When a shiny silver flying saucer lands in the Nevada desert, a group of skull-faced Martians exit the gleaming craft. Although they claim to be peaceful, they promptly "vaporize" a gathering of unfortunate Earthlings, kicking off a bizarre high-tech war with wild special effects. This studiously campy sci-fi spoof, based on a series of Topps bubble-gum cards, gleefully parodies not only schlock B-horror movies, but also overblown blockbusters such as INDEPENDENCE DAY. This subversive film is helped along by an all-star cast including Jack Nicholson in dual roles as both a clueless U.S. President (with First Lady Glenn Close) and a Las Vegas sleazebag. The film follows the wacky WAR OF THE WORLDS-like proceedings from the points of view of numerous ...

DVD $39.69  5 stars
NBC's enormously popular and critically acclaimed sitcom MY NAME IS EARL stars Jason Lee as a reformed criminal who sees the light when he loses a winning lottery ticket after getting hit by a car. He decides his bad luck can be chalked up to bad karma, and sets about making amends with everyone he has ever wronged. In past seasons this very long list included--before Earl helped them out--a former victim of Earl's schoolyard bullying, whom he helps to come out of the closet, and a one-legged girl from whom Earl once stole a car. Ethan Suplee (MALLRATS) plays Earl's slow but good-hearted brother and sidekick, Randy, and Jaime Pressly (NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE) co-stars as Earl's crass ex-wife, Joy. Playing out like a small-screen version of a Coen Brothers film, MY NAME IS EARL is funny, creative, clever, full of heart--and one of the best television series to come down the pike in quite a while. This collection presents all 22 episodes of the show's third season, ...
