Standard Screen; Bio/Filmographies; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; English Subtitles; Director's Comments In this quintessential blaxploitation film, Richard Roundtree is Shaft: a good looking, tough-talking private detective hired to rescue a gangster's daughter from kidnappers. Following the breakout success of Melvin Van Peebles's SWEET SWEETBACK'S BAADASSSSS SONG, Gordon Parks' SHAFT would officially launch the historic Blaxploitation movement. Based on the novel by Ernest Tidyman, the film stars Richard Roundtree as John Shaft, a debonair, tough-talking private detective, who became a full-fledged American archetype after the film was released. Combining street smarts and sharp wit, Shaft is the quintessential black action hero. After battling against Harlem gang kingpin Bumpy Jonas (Moses Gunn), Shaft decides to help rescue Bumpy's daughter from the Mafia. What follows is an action-packed thrill ride through the rough-and-tumble streets of early 1970s New York City.
Featuring one of the most recognizable theme songs in movie history (for which Isaac Hayes' won a Best Song Oscar in 1972), Parks' follow-up to his critically acclaimed, though monetarily disappointing, drama THE LEARNING TREE remains the definitive Blaxploitation film. Roundtree delivers a legendary performance as the ultra-cool detective, in this groundbreaking film that would spawn two sequels (SHAFT'S BIG SCORE! and SHAFT IN AFRICA) and a big-budget remake in 2000. Theatrical release: July 2, 1971
SHAFT was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2000.
The film was remade in 2000 with Samuel L. Jackson in the lead role, as John Shaft's nephew; Richard Roundtree stars in the film as the original Shaft.
Isaac Hayes auditioned for the role of Shaft before accepting the position of film composer. Shaft Reviews: "...Gordon Parks remains one of the past century's great still photographers....[The film] still surprises with a visual shoddiness that's ultimately part of its off-the-cuff charm..."
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...It's cool legacy hasn't mellowed..."-- Entertainment Weekly Staff, Entertainment Weekly "John Shaft was an in-charge, blatantly virile hero, with attitude to spare."
-- Premiere Staff, Premiere "...The last 25 minutes are an object lesson in the art of ending a movie with a bang..." -- 4 out of 5 stars
-- Ceri Thomas, Total Film

Great to have on DVD!!! This incredible movie from 1971 is wonderful to watch. The color scheme is great to see on both standard and widescreen. I have noticed that the audio quality is slightly dull, but that doesn't mean that the movie is not worth watching. Think of it this way; any loud sounds heard in the film are not loud enough to cause you to decrease the volume. I love watching this movie on DVD. With this movie on DVD, you have the option of watching it in either standard screen or widescreen. I also love the added features on the DVD. These features include the featurette of the movie being filmed on location, and you get to see how some of the scenes were shot. And, you get to see the original theatrical trailers for not just this movie, but the two sequels that followed. However, the VHS of this movie does not have these added extras. This is a real treat for anyone who loves the original Shaft!!! Get it and see for yourself!! Submitted by Matt (Macomb, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Shaft film For Sale Pre-Order Now! Available: Tuesday, January 05, 2010
$10.30 FOXY BROWN is Pam Grier's landmark Blaxploitation film, in which she creates the iconic character imitated in films by directors from Spike Lee to Quentin Tarantino.
Grier plays Foxy, a toughened woman living in a drug-plagued Los Angeles ghetto who goes on a one-woman mission of vengeance after her undercover cop boyfriend (Terry Carter) is shot down in the street. The badass lass goes undercover herself, as a call girl for the evil mistress of the drug cartel (Kathryn Loder), and with the help of a neighborhood vigilante committee, wreaks some hell on the bad guys. Highlights include a lesbian bar brawl and Foxy's sexual belittling of an old white judge. Co-stars include Antonio Fargas, Sid Haig, and Sally-Ann Stroud. Don't miss the crazily colored opening credits, which feature Grier boogying down in all sorts of super-sexy outfits to the Willie Hutch title track (Hutch also composed the groovy funk score). This was directed by cult icon Jack Hill, who also scored with Grier in the previous year's COFFY.
Chock full of sex, nudity and rampant violence, FOXY BROWN is visceral in a way that today's movies cannot be. Its treatment of graphic subjects is purposely shocking, to undermine studio conventions of the time, making Foxy's revenge especially exciting to watch.
Pam Grier, Sid Haig, Antonio Fargas, Harry Holcombe, Peter Brown, Katheryn Loder - Dir:Jack Hill

| | Superfly DVD (1972) Widescreen
Shaft video
$8.79 SUPERFLY, along with COFFY and SHAFT, completes Blaxploitations's best known
triumvirate. One of the highest-grossing pictures of 1972, SUPERFLY became an instant classic, and established director Gordon Parks firmly in Warner Brothers' sights to make THREE THE HARD WAY in 1974. Parks was one of the first African American directors to get financing from a major Hollywood studio to make the 1969 film THE LEARNING TREE.
Super Fly is a cocaine dealer who begins to realize that his life will soon end with either prison or his death. He decides to build an escape from the life by making his biggest deal yet, converting the coke to cash and running off to start a new life. The problem is that the Mob does not have a retirement plan and will give him a choice of staying and selling for them or dying if they find out his intentions. With a terrific score by Curtis Mayfield and a star wearing threads to match, SUPERFLY is chock full of the sass, flash, and action Blaxploitation is known for.
Ron O'Neal in the smart, streetwise box office success about a pusher who tries to make one last killer deal before kicking the business. Featuring a hit Curtis Mayfield score. Year: 1972 Director: Gordon Parks, Jr. Starring: Ron O'Neal, Carl Lee, Julius W. Harris

Shaft film
$9.85 Clyde Williams (Sidney Poitier) and Billy Foster (Bill Cosby) belong to a community group called The Sons and Daughters of Shaka. The city of Atlanta has plans to take away the group's meeting place, and The Sons and Daughters of Shaka don't have the money to finance a new one. Clyde and Billy come up with a hair-brained scheme to raise money for a new lodge hall by fixing a boxing match. Their plan is to hypnotize a weakling boxer and make him think he's unbeatable. Then they'll place bets on his "sure-win" fights. Their idea is so crazy that it just might work. But if anyone finds out what they're up to, there will be hell to pay.
Unusual names like "Biggie Smalls" (Calvin Lockhart), "Kansas City Mack" (John Amos), "Bootney Farnsworth" (Jimmie Walker), and "Fish an' Chips Freddie" (Morgan Roberts) add to the comic value of the film's line-up of characters.
Cosby, with his usual raucous antics, is a perfect complement to Poitier's understated humor. Curtis Mayfield's music creates the right funky atmosphere for this film.
Comedy about a pair of blue collar cons who raise funds for their fraternal order by hypnotizing a scrawny boxer into believing he's a mighty fighter, then betting heavily on him. Trouble ensues when gangsters figure out their plot and seek payback.
