DVD. 1951 film. Stars Ava Gardner, Howard Keel, & Kathryn Grayson. Score by Kern & Hammerstein II. 108 min. This vivacious remake of the Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein musical (based on an Edna Ferber novel) about life on a Mississippi riverboat tracks the hardships of Julie Laverne (Ava Gardner), a mulatto trying to pass for white while also following the course of a tumultuous love between a captain's daughter, Magnolia Hawks (Kathryn Grayson), and an itinerant gambler, Gaylord Ravenal (Howard Keel). Gardner (with help from Annette Warren, whose voice was overdubbed for Gardner's songs) gives a heartbreaking performance, and Grayson's clear, pure voice soars, set off magnificently by Keel's rich baritone. The film stands as a classic for both its surprising emotional impact and its well-known score, featuring timeless gems such as "Old Man River" and "Can't Help Lovin' that Man of Mine." Shot in Technicolor. Show Boat Reviews: "...[Enjoy] that glorious Kern-Hammerstein score....Musical lovers, your BOAT has come in." -- Rating: A

| | M*A*S*H DVD (1970) Widescreen
Show Boat video
$10.29 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H follows a group of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital officers as they perform surgery and pass the time just miles from the front lines of the Korean conflict. Led by sardonic captains "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and "Trapper" John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), the film has the feel of an absurd three-ring circus. Other characters include the uptight nurse "Hot Lips" O'Houlihan (Sally Kellerman), the confused Major Frank Burns (Robert Duvall), the troubled Captain "Painless" Waldowski (John Shuck), and the simpleminded Captain "Duke" Forrest (Tom Skerritt). Altman's decision to present his film as a series of loosely connected vignettes rather than a traditionally unfolding narrative perfectly captures the freewheeling spirit so unique to early-'70s cinema.

| | It's A Wonderful Life DVD (1946)
Show Boat film
$14.75 A good but slightly ineffectual man tries to off himself after an error that really wasn't his fault. In Christmas Carol fashion, his crusty-but-lovable guardian angel shows up to give him a tour of the world without his presence, and it isn't a pretty place. Moral courage, small-town American life, civic cooperation, and family love are glorified; corporate greed and self-involvement are vilified; at the climax, a blanket of snow like spun sugar makes everything pure and clean like redemption itself.

Show Boat DVD
$22.09 Fictionalized drama about the birth of jazz. According to the film, a Bourbon Street gambling house operator introduces it to the American public to win a girl, which is the first of a number of dubious aspects of the film that seem dated. Regardless, the film still has Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday (as a maid!), whose musical numbers more than make up for the movie's shortcomings.

Show Boat movie DVD
$14.45 In the Oregon Territory, mountain man Adam Pontipee (Howard Keel, acting and singing with gusto) comes to town to sell his crops and woo a woman to be his wife, succeeding with spirited Milly (Jane Powell), who is tired of feeding and waiting on so many men at the local inn. Her dreams of keeping house for just one man are shattered when she discovers that Adam shares his pigsty cabin with six brawling brothers. Milly's good cooking and stubborn nature whip the young men into shape and inspire them to seek women of their own. But after a disastrous barn raising during which the brothers snare the attention of the town girls only to be taunted into fighting with the town men, Adam suggests his brothers forget gentle methods of love and follow the actions of the Roman with the Sabine ("Sobbin'") women. The kidnapping of their six sweethearts spurs Milly to throw the men out of the house, but enforced proximity caused by winter and the brothers' good intentions just might help love bloom again.

Show Boat video
$15.25 Director Gale Edwards's film is an updated stage version of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's acclaimed masterpiece. Experience the last seven days in the earthly life of Jesus through the magic and wonder of a catchy and inspirational score. From his triumphant entry into Jerusalem and the enmity that this naturally arouses to his trial by the sympathetic but ultimately partisan Pontius Pilate, follow Christ as he assumes the role he was born to play. Notably, in a career change that some British comedy fans may find a bit odd, Rik Mayall (known to fans of THE YOUNG ONES as left-wing New Waver Rick) stars.

| | 3:10 To Yuma DVD (2007) Full Screen
Show Boat DVD
$14.59 Based on the Elmore Leonard story, 3:10 TO YUMA is a riveting remake of the 1957 classic Western. It's the story of Dan Evans (Christian Bale), a down-and-out rancher who lost his leg in the Civil War. With a wife and two sons, he is struggling to put food on the table, and unable to make payments on his land. When the notorious gunman Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) is apprehended nearby, a few local men are needed to escort him to the town of Contention so he can be put on the 3:10 train to Yuma Prison. Few will volunteer for the job, as they know that Wade's ruthless gang will follow them, but Evans sees an opportunity to make some fast cash, and offers to go in exchange for $200. The small team of men set off, and are later joined by Evans's young son William (Logan Lerman), who has run away from home to join them. What follows is a race against time, as the group tries to get to Yuma without the clever and dangerous Wade outsmarting them.
Crowe is fantastic as the smooth-talking gunman, and Bale delivers a moving performance as the weary-eyed Evans. The two men are perfect foils for each other. Wade is the infamous gunman, living the high life on the wrong side of the law, while Evans, who has struggled to lead an honest life, has only faced one hardship after another. It is a classic tale of good vs. evil, right vs. wrong, and yet, by the story's end, it becomes harder to separate the good guys from the bad. As the clock
ticks down, the film builds to an emotional nail-biter of an ending, reminiscent of BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID.
