Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; English Subtitles; Director's Comments; Behind The Scenes This lively musical comedy, adapted from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, will delight adults and children alike. When a woodcutter spares a special tree, the Forest Queen wants to repay his kindness. She bestows a precious gift upon the man and his wife, who have always longed for a child of their own--a wee boy named "tom thumb. Then a dastardly duo plots to rob the village...and the boy no bigger than the size of your thumb becomes a hero, outwitting the thieves and saving the town's riches.
George Pal's version of TOM THUMB is a superb adaptation of the timeless children's story about a boy who is only a few inches tall. Russ Tamblyn (later to star as Riff in WEST SIDE STORY), singing and dancing his heart out, plays the title role, with Peter Sellers and Terry-Thomas as the pair of lovable bungling villains. Academy Awards: Best Special Effects. The deliberate lower-casing of the title is correct.
George Pal won the Academy's Special Award (plaque) in 1943 for his development of Puppetoons, a novel method and technique for the production of short subjects. He produced the Academy Award-nominated cartoon "The Five Hundred Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins" in 1943.
The miniature work in "tom thumb" is based on Pal's Puppetoon figures, and was filmed in Hollywood. Life-size filming took place in London.
Tom Howard won the 1958 Academy Award for Best Special Effects.
Shot in Eastmancolor.
Additional cast: Ian Wallace (The Cobbler), Fred Spielman (song performer), Janice Torre (song performer), Kermit Goell (song performer).
Additional credits: Kenneth V. Jones (score composer), Alex Romero (dance choreographer).
Donald O'Connor wanted to play the title role, but MGM chose an actor already under contract to them.
Previous versions of the tale have been published as "The History of Tom Thumb" by R. Johnson in 1621, and "Le Petit Poucet" by Perrault in 1697.
A Galaxy Pictures/MGM production.
Released theatrically in the UK December 24, 1958.

$6.95 When four of the world's funniest black stand-up comics came together to celebrate their crownings as the "Kings of Comedy," acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee decided to film two of their most memorable shows. The result is THE ORIGINAL KINGS OF COMEDY, a raucous concert film that takes its cue from classic performers such as Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy. The host of the evening, Steve Harvey, spends most of his time criticizing modern music--namely hip-hop--for forgetting to include love in its songs, missing the days when black music was passionate and romantic. D.L. Hughley focuses on universal topics such as work, as well as taking his time to criticize certain unfortunate audience members. Cedric "The Entertainer" makes a series of clever points ...

$11.35 Comedian and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham hits the stage with hilarious new pals Achmed the Dead Terrorist and Melvin the Super hero, as well as old favorites Peanut, Walter, and Jose Jalapeno, in this sidesplitting performance at Washington D.C.'s Warner Theater.
More than just a stand-up comic, Jeff Dunham is a one-man comedy troupe--a ring-leader in a circus of snark. The veteran ventriloquist may be the only one with vocal chords, but he’s often the least vocal, playing straight man to a steam trunk of personalities: Achmed the Dead Terrorist, a goofball skeleton still fighting the infidels; Peanut, an odd purple creature with a fast mouth; Jose Jalapeño, a smooth-talking pepper on a stick; Bubba J, NASCAR’s biggest fan; and Walter, a dirty old man who speaks his mind. Together with his hilarious and irreverent puppets, Dunham riffs on everything from politics to family life, and slays the audience with his quick-witted banter. SPARK OF INSANITY features one of Dunham’s funniest performances, ...

$13.55 David Gordon Green's third film finds the audacious director trying his hand at a new genre. This time, Green ups the dramatic ante by thrusting his dreamy characters into the world of an action-packed thriller. Chris Munn (an astounding Jamie Bell) is a troubled teenager who can't seem to stay out of trouble. His hard-nosed father, John (Dermot Mulroney), and younger brother, Tim (newcomer Devon Alan), are his only companions. But when John's long-lost brother Deel (Josh Lucas) shows up for a reunion of sorts, the past comes back to haunt everyone. Deel and John were involved in a bitter love triangle as young men, which led to Deel's subsequent incarceration. The brothers also never resolved an issue surrounding stolen gold coins that belonged to their father. When the coins are brought into light, tragedy strikes, forcing Chris and Tim ...

| | Assassination Of Jesse James DVD (2007)
Tom Thumb review
$8.79 Based on the 1983 novel by Ron Hansen, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD captivatingly depicts the final few months of the legendary Jesse James's life. He was 34, and his days of ruthless robbing had dwindled, yet his fearsome reputation continued to swell. With an abundance of nickel-books retelling his brutal gun-slinging adventures, James (portrayed by Brad Pitt, in one his most convincing and moving roles) had become a symbolic hero for many Americans, and a dazzling tabloid icon for the 19th-century media. A particular young man seduced by the wonderment of James, the shifty Robert Ford (a breakthrough performance by Casey Affleck), wormed his way in as a James groupie, in the hopes of snagging a coveted spot alongside his brother Charley (played by the always affable Sam Rockwell) as one of the bandit's cronies. Ford, fiercely insecure and painfully aware that he would never be taken seriously by James (who, ever-plagued by paranoia and skepticism, found Ford's earnest obsession a bit unsettling), grew increasingly angry with his idol, leading to a destructive path that ultimately ended in the anticlimactic ...
