Dick Tracy Collection movie DVD
$16.89 The title refers to the night when three men, Randy (Matt Dillon), his cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) and Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all meet Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler) at a bar called McCool's. Actually, they don't so much meet her as fall under her spell when they first lay eyes on her. In her clinging red dress she looks like a cross between a beautiful damsel in distress and the Lady In Red looking for John Dillinger. The story begins with Randy, desperate to be rid of Jewel, hiring a sleazy hitman, played by Michael Douglas in an outré toupee. His story of how Jewel led him to ruin, filmed in a stylized flashback bathed in blue, is mirrored by Carl talking to his therapist--played ...

$9.85 Blake Edwards's return to the male-in-meltdown territory he explored in 10 and THAT'S LIFE stars John Ritter as unemployed writer Zach, who is not only suffering from writer's block, but his drinking is out of control, as is his obsessive womanizing, and, not surprisingly, his wife wants to end their marriage. To add to his problems, his house has just burned down, and his agent is knocking at death's door. But since this is a Blake Edwards comedy, Zach has enough charm and relative affluence to continue his pursuits, which the director regards with a bemused deatchment. One of his girlfriends sets his piano on fire, and another gets him to wear a glow-in-the-dark ...

$7.95 This ultra low budget horror film, a drive-in favorite in the early 1970s, is a fast paced shocker that is part REPULSION and part TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. In it, three small time crooks who are looking for a place to hideout after a crime spree happen upon a deserted looking farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. Inside, they find a young girl named Lisa who cares for her invalid grandfather. Pleased that they will have a young woman to push around, the three criminals set up shop and order Lisa to cook them some food. What the three crooks don't know, however, is that Lisa is a near psychotic young woman who regularly hallucinates and whose pent up rage is about to boil over. When one of the criminals ...

Dick Tracy Collection review
$8.79 TALK TO ME's Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene isn't quite the household name that some of his contemporaries (such as Richard Pryor or Redd Foxx) are, but this smart drama about the Washington, DC, disc jockey is a fascinating film. At the film's opening in the mid-1960s, Greene (Don Cheadle, HOTEL RWANDA) hosts a beloved radio show--at the prison where he makes his home. While visiting his incarcerated brother, Dewey Hughes (Chiwetel Ejiofor, INSIDE MAN) hears Greene's brash humor and honesty, but he brushes off Greene's attempts at a job at the radio station where Hughes works. But Greene is soon released from prison, and he won't forget his dreams of hosting his own radio show. He hounds the staff of a Washington R&B station, including Hughes and the station manager (Martin Sheen, THE WEST WING). When he finally gets a job, his show resonates with the people of the city and the changing times of the civil rights movement.
TALK TO ME could be just another biopic or racial drama, but thanks to its fine cast, it rises above the standard fare. Cheadle is engaging as the electric Petey Greene, equally adept at portraying both Greene's pathos and his humor. While Ejiofor has excelled in smaller roles in INSIDE MAN and ...

$15.05 Celebrated painter and filmmaker Julian Schnabel's third feature finds him reaching new artistic heights with this audacious and personal biopic, based on the best-selling memoir of the same name. The film tells the remarkable tale of Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric), the world-renowned editor of French ELLE magazine, who suffered a stroke and was paralyzed by the inexplicable "locked in" syndrome at the age of 43. Bauby's only way of communicating with the outside world was by blinking with one eye, and after several dedicated helpers--a string of impossibly beautiful women (Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josee Croze, Olatz Lopez Garamendia, Anne Consigny)--helped him to speak through this seemingly irrelevant gesture, he began to produce the words that would form his memoir. Along the way, as he swam in and out of consciousness, memories from his past swelled into the present, resulting in a cinematic experience that is at once heartbreaking and hopeful. Schnabel somehow manages to convey ...
