This adaptation of the Jane Austen novel focuses on Emma, a meddling but well-meaning 21-year-old, who LOVES to play matchmaker. She's currently obsessed with finding the perfect man for her friend Harriet. But what appears to be a simple task becomes a nightmare, as Emma's machinations set off a chain reaction of misunderstandings between a number of people. Things only worsen when Emma attempts to set things straight. Emma may -- or may not -- succeed in finding a mate for her pal. But what's more important is that Emma will learn a few things about herself in the process.

An elegant, deft adaptation of Jane Austen's 1816 comedy about a well-to-do young woman whose kindhearted attempts at matchmaking mask her own lack of romantic attachment. Academy Award Nominations: Best Original Musical or Comedy Score, Best Costume Design. Academy Awards: Best Original Musical or Comedy Score.

Shown at the Seattle Film Festival June 7, 1996. Released theatrically in New York City August 2, 1996. Co-produced by Matchmaker Films and Haft Entertainment. Color by Eastmancolor. Additional cast: Edward Woodall (Robert Martin), John Franklyn Robbins (Mr. Cole), and Rebecca Craig (Miss Martin). Additional credits: Joshua Meath-Baker (art director); Totty Whately (set decoration). The film reportedly had a budget of $7 million. Actress Sophie Thompson is the sister of actress/screenwriter Emma Thompson, and Sophie's co-star Phyllida Law is the mother of both. Coincidentally, Emma Thompson adapted and starred in another film based on a Jane Austen novel, 1995's "Sense and Sensibility."

5 stars PERFECT!
I own both the BBC / Kate Beckinsale version and this one. So what if a little more artistic license was taken here? Gwynneth Paltrow adds a spice and impish charm that is irresistible. The cinematography is breathtaking, and the score is almost hypnotic. As an artist, this is the Emma that gets played again and again. Gwynneth Paltrow was born for roles like this! Watch her also in Shakespeare in Love, and you will see what I mean. Not to be missed!

4 stars Emma's Review
Finally a romantic comedy that is wholesome enough for the family to enjoy, yet romantic enough to leave one wanting to cheer at the end. It was very similar to the book by Jane Austin, but what was changed, was minimal and yet did not detract from the story line like many re-makes do. I'm recommending it to my daughters and friends and happy to say that without sex and profanity, this was a very enjoyable film!!! It has rekindled my love for the classics!!!

5 stars A perfect movie
This is one of those "watch over and over" movies... the brilliant and beautiful actors and their acting are without flaw; the costuming and settings wonderful; the story, the dialogue, and the 'messages' are ageless and delightful. A thorough delight. A perfect movie.

5 stars My Favorite
I have always loved this movie so when I got my DVD player I had to upgrade my VHS to DVD,it was pretty much worn out anyway. This movie has a timeless romantic quality. The matchmaker ultimately always gets matched up in the end.

1 star Inspiring
Because of this movie I have discovered the world of Jane Austen. Now I am a huge Jane Austen fan and have also fallen in love with England. Now is a dream for me to go to college there and live there. The movie Emma inspired me to do that. Five years ago I saw the movie Emma and I fell in love with it. Now even today it is still my all time and forvever will be my favorite movie.

Emma

This delightfully fun and lighthearted comedy is based on the story that inspired the hit movie CLUELESS! Dazzling Gwyneth Paltrow (SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS) shines as EMMA, a mischievous young beauty who sets up her single friends. Funny thing is ... she's not very good at it! So when Emma tries to find a man for Harriet (Toni Collette -- THE SIXTH SENSE, ABOUT A BOY), she makes a hilariously tangled mess of everyone's lives. You'll enjoy all the comic confusion ... until Emma herself falls in love, finally freeing everyone from her outrageously misguided attempts at matchmaking.

Actress Emma Thompson both wrote and stars in this adaptation of Jane Austen's SENSE AND SENSIBILITY--a novel that perceptively examines the social manners and laws of early-19th-century Britain. Set in the English countryside, the film follows the loves and heartaches of sisters Elinor (Thompson) and Marianne Dashwood (Kate Winslet). The two have extremely divergent approaches to life: Elinor represents "sense" and believes in behaving with propriety and thoughtfulness, while Marianne represents "sensibility" and basks in her own emotions. Both women, however, experience confusion when their lovers, seemingly on the verge of proposing marriage, spurn them. For director Ang Lee, the film marks a break from his Father Knows Best trilogy, which examined the problems of the contemporary Taiwanese family. Many people questioned whether an Asian director could handle an English period film. Lee answered those questions with a gorgeous film that both captures the nuances of Austen's novel and proves that Lee is a first-rate director capable of tackling any material. Featuring Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman, among others, the stellar cast inspired Lee to flatteringly exclaim, "Can everyone in England act?" The bicentennial production of Jane Austen's novel is given the most lavish treatment yet, by UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS director Simon Langton in this television mini-series. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE stars Jennifer Ehle (POSSESSION) as Elizabeth Bennet, a witty and headstrong young woman in 19th century England. When she meets the standoffish Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth), they initially clash, but there may be something deeper behind their animosity. Firth (BRIDGET JONES' DIARY) sets the standard for period film heroes with his portrayal of Mr. Darcy, a character sure to make both minds and hearts race. The classic novel of manners, society, and love includes much of Austen's rich commentary on human nature, and features extensive, gorgeous location shooting in and around historic English country homes. In his second adaptation of an Oscar Wilde play, writer-director Oliver Parker (AN IDEAL HUSBAND) assembles a peerless cast to engage in this witty comedy of manners and mistaken identity. In 1890s London, rakish Algernon Montcrieff (Rupert Everett, who also starred in HUSBAND) runs into his friend, Jack Worthing (Colin Firth), who is in town to propose marriage to Algy's wildly romantic cousin, Gwendolen (Frances O'Connor). When returning a cigarette case to Jack, Algy reads the inscription, and discovers his friend has two secrets. Jack has created a devilish younger brother/alter ego called "Ernest" to hide his own misdeeds, and has a beautiful young ward named Cecily (Reese Witherspoon), whom he wants to keep clear of the roguish Algy. While Jack deals with the large obstacle standing between him and Gwendolen--namely, her mother, the imposing Lady Bracknell (a wonderfully imperious Judi Dench)--Algy devises a way to meet Cecily. The confusion and hilarity come to a peak when Algy arrives at Jack's country manor posing as Ernest in order to woo Cecily, and Gwendolen runs away to the country to be with Jack--whom she knows as Ernest. The stellar cast and Wilde's clever words make for genuine entertainment. Closed Captioned; Bio/Filmographies; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Director's Comments; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re

A SCANDAL IN PARIS, based on the autobiography of Francois Eugene Vidocq, follows the life story of a suave French thief from his birth in a prison to his unlikely rise to the position of Paris's chief of police. After spending much of his young adulthood in the house of his birth, Vidocq (George Sanders) escapes from jail and embarks on a series of nervy crimes that eventually, through political cunning, deception, and seduction, climaxes with his ascension to the position of chief of police of Paris, which he intends to abuse to execute his most daring heist. Director Douglas Sirk, displaying his burgeoning skills in one of his first American films, shapes Vidocq's story into a charming romantic classic full of urbane wit, sophistication, and sultry musical numbers. The name may have been changed to Harper to capitalize on Paul Newman's recent success with HUD (1963), but this private-eye mystery is unmistakably based on a Ross MacDonald Lew Archer novel. When a millionaire businessman turns up missing, his estranged invalid wife (Lauren Bacall) hires private detective Harper (Newman) to find him. The P.I. quickly discovers that the victim has been kidnapped by some of those nearest and dearest to him, and uncovers a tangled web of smuggling, greed, drugs and petty family jealousies. With a script from prolific longtime Hollywood screenwriter William Goldman, this Lew Harper detective thriller was followed up nine years later with the THE DEAD POOL (1975). Based on a novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte (THE CLUB DUMAS) and coscripted by director Roman Polanski, THE NINTH GATE was Polanski's first feature after a long break following the release of 1995's DEATH AND THE MAIDEN--in between, there was an aborted project that faltered when designated star John Travolta opted out. Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) is a cynical rare books dealer hired by Boris Balkan (Frank Langella), a scholar specializing in books on Satanism, to recover the only two remaining copies (in addition to the one owned by Balkan) of THE NINE GATES OF THE KINGDOM OF SHADOWS, a 17th-century text with cryptic illustrations supposedly contributed by Lucifer himself. Corso's investigation takes him to Europe, where he is pursued by a strange girl (Emmanuelle Seigner) who seemes to assume the role of his guardian angel: Bizarre deaths inspired by the book's morbid illustrations befall all those who come into contact with the book--except himself. This occult mystery should satisfy fans of subtly creepy, stylish tales of the supernatural along the lines of Polanski's own ROSEMARY'S BABY.
