Smoke Signals Movie Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A movie about spirit and humor of our people Smoke Signals is based on the story by "Sherman Alexie" and his novel Loneranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" It is a great relflection to those like myself who have grown up on the reservation and knows what it means to be Native American. The story is great with colorful characters and hilarious situations. Directed by Chris Eyre (Skinwalkers) he uses a style of telling the story like Rodriguez did in "El Mariachi" or Spielberg in the "Color Purple" To others, you may not understand the humor at times. But for us, it is a great feeling that we can tell beautiful stories that others can share. If you like this, here are others you should look up: Dance Me Outside, Skinwalkers, The Dark Wind, Thunderheart, and Running Brave. Submitted by a reviewer (Wahiawa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Paulva Shaw I love this movie because it shows the actual truth about our rez lives today. Today not much of our aboriginal truths are told as it should be. Submitted by Paulva Shaw (Manitoba) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great indie film This movie deals a lot with identity and forgiveness. Sometimes we only see the bad in people; sometimes only the good. Sometimes two people can look at an individual and feel two completely different ways about him. The two main characters are very different, but they work well together. This movie gives a feel for the native american way of life - both humorous and tragic at times. I definitely plan on buying this movie, it's that good! Life on the Res This film manages to combine deep tradegy and humor very well. It had me in stiches with lines like 'You should look more stoical - as if you've just killed a bufallo.' Which produces the reponse,'But my people are fishermen.'
And the girls so poor they drive with their car stuck in reverse gear. Or the Res weather forecast that just describes the shape of the clouds.
There are real issues about employment, Indian-Identitiy, health, drunkeness and so on behind the humor - but you never feel that you're being preached at.

$9.65 LITTLE BIG MAN was significant when it was made because of its editing, which was still being explored in Hollywood at the time as a vehicle for innovative, simple storytelling.
Arthur Penn's film of Thomas Berger's bestselling novel demystifies the Old West with its funny, chaotic portrayal of one man's experiences in its closing days. Jack Crabb (Dustin Hoffman), a 121-year-old Indian living in a rest home, relates his incredible life experiences. According to Crabb's somewhat fanciful tales, he was raised by the Cheyenne from ...

$6.55 Agent Ray Levoi (Val Kilmer) buried his Native American heritage with the body of his drunken father. Raised by his white mother and stepfather, he becomes a gung-ho federal agent who never questions the authority of the U.S. government. Then Levoi finds himself in a real-life version of "cowboys and Indians" when the FBI moves onto a South Dakota reservation to apprehend a fugitive. Once in the community, the agent uncovers a plot to frame American Indian activists. With the help of an Indian sheriff and shaman (Graham Greene), he learns to accept a long-denied ...

Smoke Signals DVD
$7.75 SKINS, based on the novel by Adrian C. Louis, is the impressive second feature of Native American director Chris Eyre (SMOKE SIGNALS). Filmed on location at the Pine Ridge Oglala Lakota reservation in South Dakota, SKINS tells the story of Rudy (Eric Schweig), a policeman, and his older brother Mogie (Graham Greene of THE GREEN MILE), a jobless alcoholic. Mogie had once looked after his kid brother, but his experiences in Vietnam left him a bitter and broken man. Rudy frequently gives money to his mischievous older brother, which Mogie spends on beer. Frustrated with rampant alcoholism and crime on the "rez," Rudy becomes a vigilante. While Rudy thinks he's doing the right thing for his people, his extralegal activities lead to tragedy. SKINS is a powerful drama laced with acerbic humor. The film captures the harsh realities of Pine Ridge life with affection and wit, and breaks down negative ...
