93 minute DVD musical featuring Alicia Silverstone, Kennet h Branagh and Natascha McElhone. This '30's style mysical S hakespearean adaptation, is a frothy but bitter-sweet comed y about love and romance in which four well intentioned but misgueded young men discover the impossibility of denying the power of true love. In LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST, actor-director Kenneth Branagh presents William Shakespeare's romantic comedy as a musical. Kenneth Branagh's musical adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy sets the action in the last few days before the start of World War II. In the fictional kingdom of Navarre, King Ferdinand (Alessandro Nivola) and three chums take vow to study rigorously and avoid women for three years. Their vow is immediately tested with the surprise visit of the Princess of France (Alicia Silverstone) with three ladies-in-waiting. Romantic merriment ensues as each of the men fall in love and attempt to woo the ladies without being caught. Branagh's film features musical numbers by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and others performed in the classic style of 1930s MGM musicals.
Theatrical release: June 9, 2000.
This is the first feature-film adaptation of William Shakespeare's LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST. Love's Labour's Lost Reviews: "...One of the year's most pleasant surprises....A little gem of a movie..." -- 4 out of 5 stars
-- Mike Kerrigan, Box Office "...This particular Shakespearean romp qualifies as a winning example of actors stepping outside their usual personas and scoring a knockout."
-- Stephen Farber, Movieline's Hollywood Life "...The film ends with a long, sweetly melancholic sequence....You leave the theater tipsy on Shakespeare's raillery and Ira Gershwin's wit, as though you'd had a glass or two of cheap champagne..."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "...A luscious labor of love....The overall effect is knowing and joyful at the same time..."
-- Derek Elley, Variety "...[The film features] Natascha McElhone's typically striking presence..."
-- Mike Clark, USA Today "...The intimate moments often sparkle. Nivola, Lester and McElhone display a lovely ease..."

Love's Labour's Lost Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Nice Twists on the Old Bard Actually, an excellent musical twist, coupled with a beginning of beginning of World War II through victory twist. Personally, I think that Mr. Shakespeare would be pleased with all the tremendous energy pumped into what, by all accounts, was in his day limited to a fairly staid performance. I liked it, my wife really liked it. We both agreed the only thing missing was Emma Thompson. Submitted by wordsmithe (Pensacola, Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Movie great; format could be better I first saw the movie in the theatres, but since this video was "reformatted to fit my screen" it cut off parts on the left and right sides. There were a number of music and dance sequences where you were only able to see 2 or 3 of the four men or four women at a given time. The video process panned back and forth, but it would have been more impressive to view the dance sequences with all of the characters visible and choreographed.
I've always enjoyed Shakespeare and to see popular young actors performing the stories in different settings provides a way of generating interest. The addition of music from the 1930's was a nice touch. Submitted by nitelyfe (Southern California, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$12.80 Filmmaker Michael Henning details the efforts of seven activists in challenging the U.S. government to legalize industrial hemp in order to ease reliance on foreign oil, conserve forests, and discover more efficient forms of energy. Across the world, over 30 countries rely on industrial hemp to fulfill their agricultural needs. In America, however, hemp is associated so closely with marijuana that lawmakers are afraid to touch the topic lest they be seen as opponents of the war on drugs. Back in ...
