Black & White; Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English Independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch reaches a new plateau in his career with this poetic anti-Western. DEAD MAN follows William Blake (no, not the famous poet), an innocent young man who travels out west in order to find employment but ends up a wounded fugitive on the run from ruthless bounty hunters. Partnered with a spiritual Native American named Nobody, Blake begins to morph into the outlaw that he is mistakenly considered to be. Jarmusch's profound drama features a wonderful performance by Johnny Depp, as well as a moving score by Neil Young. In bringing his distinct vision to the Western genre, writer-director Jim Jarmusch has created a quasi-mystical avant-garde drama that remains a deeply spiritual viewing experience. After losing his parents and fiancée, a Cleveland accountant named William Blake (a remarkable Johnny Depp) spends all his money and takes a train to the frontier town of Machine in order to work at a factory. Upon arriving in Machine, he is denied his expected job and finds himself a fugitive after murdering a man in self-defense. Wounded and helpless, Blake is befriended by Nobody (Gary Farmer), a wandering Native American who considers him to be a ghostly manifestation of the famous poet. Nobody aids Blake in his flight from three bumbling bounty hunters, preparing him for his final journey--a return to the world of the spirits.
Jarmusch once again employs the beautifully contrasted black-and-white photography of Robby Müller, which sets a poetic, dreamy mood. He also fades in and out of scenes in order to better reflect Blake's dazed, weak mental state. Adding an even greater depth to the film is Neil Young's haunting score, which completes the overall effect. DEAD MAN stands firmly as a timeless work of art whose impact only increases upon subsequent viewings. Theatrical release: May 10, 1996.
DEAD MAN premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1995.
Segments of the film were shot on location in a national forest in Sedona as well as the Peaks Ranger Districts, Arizona.
DEAD MAN is dedicated to the memory of Dick Pfeiffer and Paul D. O'Brien.
The two marshals that appear in the film are named Lee and Marvin, in tribute to Lee Marvin, the great Western actor.
This film was one of Robert Mitchum's final screen appearances before his death in 1997.
Steve Buscemi makes an uncredited appearance as a bartender.

Turn me on, Dead Man! This is an incredible movie, with incredible cinematography, an awesome soundtrack by Neil Young, and of course, another brilliant performance from Johnny Depp. There are also numerous cameos from the likes of Iggy Pop, Gabriel Byrne, Robert Mitchum, and a not-so-convincing turn as a coal miner from Crispin Glover. Considering the price, this DVD is a definite must have for Johnny Depp fans and anyone who enjoys off kilter indie flicks. Submitted by kalismommie (Oklahoma City, OK) Was This Review Helpful? UNUSUAL PSCHO DRAMA This movie has many levels to it.. It needs to be watched several times. It almost a return to the days of a Felini
film. If you think you have bad luck and it could only happen to you....watch this one Submitted by cgscuba (SAN MATEO, CA. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Soul of the West This is a western for viewers who don't like westerns ˜ an existential horse opera, if you will, more concerned with the psychological ramifications of all the "wide open space", than with telling your typical cowboys v. Indians story. From Robbie Müller's spectacular B & W cinematography to the literate and thought-provoking script and the nuanced performances, the film provides a multitude of pleasures, not the least of which are the cameos by the likes of such disparate film talents as Robert Mitchum and Iggy Pop.
An unusual and rewarding film for those viewers able to broaden their view of the Western genre. Submitted by mroach (Detroit, MI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$12.85 The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses most similar live action fare and breezes by with more than a couple of inventive set pieces, as well as some excellent comic dialogue.

| | Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai DVD (1999)
Dead Man movie DVD
$6.99 Eastern and Western cultures and philosophies intersect in this comic drama from acclaimed director Jim Jarmusch. Ghost Dog (Forest Whitaker) is a silent modern-day warrior who lives on a rooftop shack. He spends his days breeding pigeons and playing chess in the park with his best friend, Raymond (Isaach de Bankolé), a French-speaking ice-cream man. At night he goes to work as a hit man, performing his tasks stealthily and invisibly, abiding by the codes established by HAGAKURE: THE BOOK OF THE SAMURAI, an 18th-century text. One night, while on his latest hit, Ghost Dog encounters a mob boss's beautiful daughter, Louise (Tricia Vessey). Although Ghost Dog leaves her unharmed, her father nonetheless orders Ghost Dog's execution, to the dismay of Louie (John Tormey), his loyal retainer. As the mobsters struggle to locate the mysteriously untraceable Ghost Dog, he must find a way to protect himself while remaining loyal to Louie and the ancient codes that define him as an individual. Jarmusch successfully tackles a variety of genres with GHOST DOG, including mob movies and spiritual samurai films. Fusing all of this with the RZA's thumping, atmospheric score, GHOST DOG remains another lighthearted, entertaining addition to Jarmusch's impressive filmography.

Dead Man video
$9.69 Writer/Director Sally Potter's ambitious historic romance THE MAN WHO CRIED is an epic war drama laced with moral parable and bolstered by lush sets and costumes. The story begins familiarly enough--a young Russian Jewish girl is displaced just before World War II and separated from her family--but Potter has woven around the character of Suzie (Christina Ricci) a labyrinth of color, dance, ethnic music, and culture that transcends a typical or cliched war-time drama. By the use of an eclectic, but brilliant, cast, the complex set of choices made by the characters--all outsiders on some level--help to convey the desperation and strength in each of their situations. In particular, there is Suzie, who was raised in a proper English household after fleeing her homeland. Withdrawn, silently tormented, she longs to find her father (Oleg Yankovsky) who fled to America to find a better life for their family. Poetically, Suzie finds a singing voice to express who she is, traveling to Paris where she becomes part of the Moulin Rouge set. It is here--amidst the glamour and impending doom of Paris in the 1930s--that she meets Lola (an almost unrecognizable Cate Blanchett), a fascinating, sophistocated woman who guides Suzie but loses her own identity in a relationship with a rich singer (John Turturro). Suzie also finds love in the arms of the gypsy Cesar (Johnny Depp), but when the Nazis invade the city, everything must change. In this elegant and moving film, Potter has turned the Paris of today into the Paris of the 1930s, staging many incredible scenes, one in which the Place de la Concorde is actually completely emptied of cars and people.

$10.29 Abbie Hoffman (Vincent D'Onofrio), the dynamic, energetic political activist who, in the 60s, protested the war in Vietnam and the capitalist philosophies of companies that produced Napalm--most memorably by burning piles of $1 bills outside the New York Stock Exchange--comes into focus in STEAL THIS MOVIE. Outspoken on issues ranging from environmentalism to CIA recruitment on college campuses, Hoffman inspired his generation and taught them how to organize politically. A detailed look at one of American counterculture's most fascinating personalities, STEAL THIS MOVIE is one film not to miss.
