Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra: Bob Brookmeyer (conductor); Marko Lackner, Stefan Pfeifer (alto saxophone); Paul Heller, Nils Van Haften (tenor saxophone); Marcus Bartelt (baritone saxophone); Thorsten Benkenstein, Torsten Mass, Sebastian Strempel, Ralf Hesse, Jorg Engels (trumpet); Ludwig Nuss, Ansgar Striepens, Christian Jakso (trombone); Edward Partyka (bass trombone); Kris Goessens (piano); Jurgen Grimm (keyboards); Ingmar Heller (bass); John Hollenbeck (drums); Christopher Dell (percussion).
This stunning release features the recording debut of Bob Brookmeyer's New Art Orchestra, made up mostly of young Europeans recruited by the valve trombonist while touring the Continent. The four-part suite "Celebration" was originally written as a feature for the late baritone sax great Gerry Mulligan for a special concert in 1994, two years before his death. Scott Robinson fills Mulligan's role admirably on this initial recording of this extended work, and Brookmeyer's incredible voicings within the haunting ballad movement "Remembering" are also worth noting. The tracks following the suite are a diverse lot, but all of them merit strong praise. The leader's solo on the closer, "Boom Boom," demonstrates that his playing is as exciting as ever. Highly recommended! ~ Ken Dryden

JazzTimes (10/00, pp.95-6) - "...The orchestra is in commendable shape for its debut recording. The major work is Brookmeyer's 'Celebration Suite', which consists of the jumpy 'Jig', 'Slow Dance', the almost funereal 'Remembering' and the bright, sometimes tumultuous 'Two And'..." $9.85 Most of this CD features vibraphonist Teddy Charles heading an advanced tentet in 1956, a unit including the likes of trumpeter Art Farmer, altoist Gigi Gryce, tenor saxophonist J.R. Monterose, pianist Mal Waldron, and guitarist Jimmy Raney. The arrangements of George Russell ("Lydian M-1"), Gil Evans (a year before Miles Ahead), Jimmy Giuffre, Mal Waldron, and Charles are quite advanced but often leave room for some swinging spots. The final three selections on the CD are actually taken from a slightly later ...
| | Best Of George Benson: The Instrumentals CD (1997)
New Works: Celebration music CDs
$9.09 1997's BEST OF GEORGE BENSON - THE INSTRUMENTALS brings together tracks from eight of the 12 Warner Brothers albums the guitarist had made at that point, starting with 1976's BREEZIN.' It includes several tunes with Benson's band from the BREEZIN'/WEEKEND IN L.A. period.
Other material includes tunes produced by Omar Hakim, Arif Mardin or Quincy Jones, with musicians like Bob James, Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock, and Anthony Jackson making various appearances. Benson always plays his butt off, no matter what kind of record he's making, and even though the bulk of this material tends toward innocuous instrumental R&B, it's ...

| | George Pajon, Jr Fried Plantains CD (2005)
New Works: Celebration music CDs
$12.65 Unlikely guitar guru George Pajon, Jr., probably best known for his work with pop-rap hitmakers the Black Eyed Peas, offers a new perspective for what jazz guitar is all about. His 2005 release, Fried Plantains is the least guitar-centric record led by a guitar player in quite some time. Funky lines and deep grooves are the order of the day, with writing that has a very vintage, chitlin' circuit feel. Hammond B-3s and fuzz tone overdrive abounds, mingling and churning over an ever-present, less-is-more drum groove. Without a blistering, pyrotechnic guitar passage to be found, the whole record has a very relaxed, low-rider kind of vibe to it. Featuring drummer Mike Clark, one of hip-hop's most sampled drummers of all time; fellow Black Eyed Peas veteran, bass player Mike Fratantuno; jazz-funk pioneer, organist/keyboard player Robert Walter; and fusion drumming great Robin Dimaggio as Pajon's base, all the right ingredients are there for a good 'n' greasy, home-cooked disc. Though maybe lacking the interest for a jazz aficionado's sit-down listen, Fried Plantains is a great disc for a relaxed hang. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez
