| | Steven Kirby Point Of Balance CD Steven Kirby Discography of CDs
Steven Kirby has an airy sound that is often reminiscent of Pat Metheny. On the two sessions included on this CD, the Boston-based guitarist performs nine of his originals. The other musicians are Bevan Manson or Bennet Paster on piano, Harvie Swartz or Gerald Wilfong on bass, George Schuller or John Mettam on drums, and soprano saxophonist Carl Clements making the quartet a quintet on two numbers; they are mostly in a supportive role, interacting closely with Kirby and doing their best to inspire him without drawing that much attention to themselves. Clements displays a pleasing tone during his two melodic appearances. Kirby has a relaxed and lyrical improvising style, even at faster tempos; since his compositions are harmonically complex yet quite tonal, there are some sleepy moments scattered throughout this release. However, there seems to be a lot of inner heat, and as the guitarist continues to mature, hopefully his fire will erupt more often. Overall this is a worthwhile effort, an important first step for Steve Kirby toward developing an original style. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Point Of Balance music CDs
$13.75 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic and harmonic intricacies that seem to spur Coltrane's saxophone exploration to new heights.
The quartet shines on ballads ("Sweet and Lovely"), but ...

| | Roberta Gambarini So In Love CD (2009)
Point Of Balance CD music
$12.35 It seems incredible that Roberta Gambarini didn't win the Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal Competition but she was new to the U.S., having just arrived from her native Italy. But with each new release, she has demonstrated that she is easily the most accomplished vocalist of the competitors for the prize. Pianist Hank Jones, who knows a thing or two about great singers, refers to her as the "greatest vocalist to come along in the past 60 years." On 2009's SO IN LOVE, with a rhythm section rotating among three talented up-and-coming pianists (Tamir Hendeman, Eric Gunnison, and Gerald Clayton), Gambarini works her magic with familiar standards and a few unexpected choices. She has a love of Cole Porter's songs, opening with a touching, richly textured version of the title song. She also restores the oft-omitted verse to "Get Out of Town," then delivers a ...

Point Of Balance music CDs
$13.75 David "Fathead" Newman has recorded many albums through the years in a variety of contexts and on several instruments. This straight-ahead effort is pretty definitive of his jazz abilities, for it has Newman making four appearances on tenor, two on soprano, and one apiece on flute and alto. Accompanied by vibraphonist Bryan Carrott, pianist John Hicks, bassist Steve Novosel, and drummer Winard Harper, Newman digs ...
