Recorded in Richmond, Indiana and Chicago, Illinois between July 17, 1923 and April 20, 1926. Originally released on Retrieval (FJ104). Includes liner notes by Laurie Wright.
All songs written by Jelly Roll Morton except "Tia Juana (Tee Wana)" (Rodemich) and "Bucktown Blues" (Senter).
FERD "JELLY ROLL" MORTON includes all the piano solos recorded by Morton between 1923 and 1926.
This CD reissue from the British Retrieval label has Jelly Roll Morton's first 24 piano solos. The earlier 20 have been issued several times by Milestone but it is convenient to have all 24 (dating from 1923-24 and 1926) together. Morton, who had a very distinctive style, was one of the early jazz giants and his piano playing (a major transition between ragtime and New Orleans jazz) tends to be a bit underrated. Highlights of this delightful set include "Grandpa's Spells," "Wolverine Blues," "Froggie Moore," "Shreveport Stomps" and two versions apiece of "King Porter Stomp" and "The Pearls." Classic music. ~ Scott Yanow
Solo performer: Jelly Roll Morton (piano).

| | Miff Mole Slippin' Around, Vol. 1 CD (1998)
Jelly Roll music CDs
$18.05 One of the top trombonists of the second half of the 1920s, Miff Mole had a highly original style that featured wide-interval jumps and occasional whole-tone scales. Other than two big-band selections from 1937, all of his recordings as a leader prior to 1944 are on Slippin' Around, Vol. 1 and Slippin' Around Again, Vol. 2. Vol. 1 includes 14 numbers by Miff Mole's Molers of 1927-1928, a recording band that was basically Red Nichols' Five Pennies: cornetist Nichols, Mole, pianist Arthur Schutt, guitarist Dick McDonough, and drummer Vic Berton, plus reedist Jimmy Dorsey, Joe Tarto on tuba, drummer Ray Bauduc, Fud Livingston on reeds, bass saxophonist Adrian Rollini, and guitarist Eddie Lang on various tracks. Mole's four numbers backing stage singer Sophie Tucker (who sounds pretty strong in 1927), four cuts with Red & Miff's Stompers, two by the Red Nichols Orchestra, and a pair of test pressings from a Mole session in 1930 (with trumpeter Phil Napoleon) wrap up this intriguing set. Highlights include adventurous versions of "Hurricane," "Delirium," "Davenport Blues," "Imagination," and "Feeling No Pain." ~ Scott Yanow

| | Count Basie At Newport CD (1957) Bonus Tracks; Reissue; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Jelly Roll songs
$12.35 Originally released on Verve (6024). Includes liner notes by Richard Sudhalter.
By the time of this 1957 recording, the Basie band was enjoying something of a renaissance, and the appreciation of the audience for this legendary musician helps make this live recording all the warmer. This was a special night for the band, as it represented a coming together of the contemporary Basie assemblage with some of the original Kansas City veterans. Entrepeneur John Hammond, who helped bring Basie to national attention in the '30s, warmly introduces the band one by one, stressing the importance of each member.
Thad Jones, Frank Foster and company lay down a solid version of "Swingin' At Newport," after which they are joined by one after another of Basie's old Kansas City cohorts. From Lester Young to Jimmy Rushing, the stage soon becomes flooded with KC royalty, as old meets new with glorious results. Clearly, this evening at Newport ...
| | Jackie McLean Action CD (1964) Remastered
Jelly Roll album
$8.45 This 1964 Blue Note release features Jackie McLean and his band in fine form. A hard-bop record with polytonal leanings, ACTION exemplifies an era in jazz when new ideas were truly budding. Ornette Coleman and his associates had been playing free jazz five years prior to the making of this album, but it took a while for the hard-boppers to digest the music and embrace the freedom that the style brought to the art form. Therefore, a lot of the music from this period sounds like it's in transition, and ACTION is no exception.
In other words, ACTION is a good example of the growing convergence of bop and avant-garde. This is heard particularly on the title track, and on trumpeter Charles Tolliver's tune, "Plight." However, the group falls back on their more traditional roots with the standard, "I Hear a Rhapsody" and on the bluesy McLean original, "Hootnan." Each player holds his own on this date, ...
| | Don Cherry Where Is Brooklyn? CD (1966)
Jelly Roll CD music
$10.29 This 1966 date finds avant-jazz titan Don Cherry further exploring the mercurial musical sensibility he'd developed to near perfection in Ornette Coleman's band and on his early solo releases like COMPLETE COMMUNION. WHERE IS BROOKLYN?, as with COMMUNION, is a quartet date, this time featuring saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, bassist Henry Grimes, and drummer Ed Blackwell.
The tracks are shorter than on other albums (excepting the album's closer, "Unite," which tops out at almost 18 minutes), and while that might suggest a more focused approach to song structure, ...

| | King Crimson B'Boom: Official Bootleg - Live In Argentina 1994 CDs (1995) (Import)
Jelly Roll songs
$15.85 All music written by King Crimson. All lyrics written by Adrian Belew.
King Crimson's dynamic live performances have produced many various bootleg tapes featuring all eras of the group's existence. Crimson's October 1994 tour of South America, however, yielded the only official bootleg, B'BOOM. Digitally recorded from the main house P.A., this double disc set captures the '90s era Crimson, the "Double Trio," in a most unique way. The recorded sounds are exactly how the microphones heard the performance, not how the audience heard it. This produces a very crisp, detailed live record with heightened realism due to the sound engineer's unique perspective.
On disc one, instrumentals including "Vrooom," "Red," "Thrak" and the drum feature "B'Boom" represent Crimson's unparalleled ability to stretch the possibilities of sound and technology. Also included are "Frame By Frame," "Sex, Sleep, Eat, Drink, Dream" and an outstanding vocal performance by Adrian Belew on "One Time." The schizophrenic "Indiscipline" closes the first set with a bang. Disc two, like the first, includes ...
| | Harry Potter & Sorcerer's Stone Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone CD (2002)
Jelly Roll album
$14.49 HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Score Soundtrack Album For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. "Hedwig's Theme" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Instrumental Composition.
When Chris Columbus was tapped to direct the eagerly awaited film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's best-selling multi-generational children's book, he made it clear that the legendary John Williams was the only choice to compose music for this magical yarn. Having conjured up mystical moods for timeless tales ranging from STAR WARS to SUPERMAN, it's no wonder Columbus was eager to hand this challenging assignment off to the master.
With the world of HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE revolving around a boarding school for warlocks-in-training, the Long Island native uses a full range of symphonic splendor to make this one of his most memorable scores. The use of the delicate music box-like sounds of a celeste in the sweeping intro "Prologue" takes on a different meaning when this fairy-like sound is used with a darker edge on the closing "Hedwig's Theme." Key scenes get infused with Williams' crisp arrangements. "The Quidditch Match" benefits from a bellowing fanfare, abbreviated militaristic cadence and frantic strings, ...

Jelly Roll album
$16.45 "The Galloway brothers make music that will make you feel things you thought only the likes of songwriters like Elliott Smith or Jeff Mangum could. The addition of drummer Jack Gingrich to this family band has spawned the band that will eventually put Chico on the map as the hometown of one of the worlds most loved rock bands."-I Heart Chico Bands, October, 2007"The Shimmies, O Lord! Please don't let them be misunderstood! They come not in the fashion of so many other bands of late, with a keen eye set to the whimsical attention of hipsters and mods, carefully prepared in the knowledge of a how a successful band should present themselves: manufactured and tightly packaged like Abercrombie and Fitch underwear models. Oh no. Not these scraggly faced minstrels. Their audience is not composed of curvaceous pin-ups, dolled up like the Whores of Babylon (Woe be to Nebuchadnezzar!) No. Fans of The Shimmies come out of the woods; come in from the flat and far-reaching praries; down ...
