Coon-Sanders Original Nighthawk Orchestra includes: Carleton Coon, Joe Sanders (leaders).
Now almost forgotten, the Coon-Sanders Original Nighthawk Orchestra was one of the most popular dance bands of its day. This collection, pieced together from rare 78s and nicely remastered, is a gem of light swing and Dixieland jazz. Featuring fine soloists and a rather silly nature, this music is pure fun, reminiscent of Roy Shield's Little Rascals scores. The liner notes offer some nice background on the band, and a bit of historical perspective as well. ~ Tim Sheridan

Best Of Coon-Sanders 1924-1932 album
$10.49 On 2005's CHRISTMAS SONGS, Diana Krall applies her sultry vocals and nuanced piano lines to a strong set of holiday classics. In addition to turning in a stirring performance of "The Christmas Song" that would make Nat "King" Cole proud, Krall eases into a swaying version of "Winter Wonderland" and a lush rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." With its dynamic arrangements and pitch-perfect ...
| | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered
Best Of Coon-Sanders 1924-1932 CD music
$6.39 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal ...

| | Incredible Jazz Guitar Of Wes Montgomery CD (1960) SACD Hybrid
Best Of Coon-Sanders 1924-1932 CD music
$15.19 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
John "Wes" Montgomery taught himself to play at the age of nineteen and created a style as influential to jazz guitar as was Charlie Christian's to an earlier generation. Recorded in the early part of his solo career, THE INCREDIBLE JAZZ GUITAR OF WES MONTGOMERY defined standards for hard bop guitar which are as cogent today as they were in 1960.
The album jumps out with the quartet hustling through Sonny Rollins' "Airegin," where Wes performs his often imitated licks with grace and agility. His extended phrases, thematic development, harmonic and melodic embellishment come together in a formidable technique with a heavy swing. An impressive use of octaves and chords coupled with the rejection of a guitar pick in favor of his own thumb allowed Wes' guitar to sing with warmth and with beauty. The lyrical rendition of "Polka Dots And Moonbeams" and his own "D-Natural Blues" are prime examples of the fullness of his lines. To this day, whenever a guitarist uses octaves he runs the risk of comparison to Wes, such was his mastery of this ...

| | Cal Tjader El Sonido Nuevo CD (1966) Bonus Tracks; Japan
Best Of Coon-Sanders 1924-1932 music CDs
$29.69 Latin jazz titans Eddie Palmieri (piano) and Cal Tjader (vibraphone) join forces on this thoroughly enjoyable session of south-of-the-border post-bop. Entitled EL SONIDO NUEVO, this 1966 release finds Tjader and Palmieri blending hot Latin styles (there are echoes of mambo, and foretastes of salsa) with the cool timbres and feel then popular in West Coast jazz. Despite relentless Latin grooves by the percussionists, and Palmieri's fiery playing--in which he incorporates guajira (a meter-shifting Cuban folk dance) and compasa (Cuban hill chants), among other styles--the proceedings have a smooth, almost lounge-like feel.
